Hi guys,

I am currently trying to understand Dalian's rapid transit plans, which is not easy due to their coding (M and R, which is not similar to the actual line numbers ...)

Will the JinPu Line (R4) run as Line 10 between Jiuli and Zhengxinglu? Why there is another Line labelled as Line 10 between Dalian North Station and Jiuli? (e.g. shown on Baidu maps.)

Metroline 7 seems to be scheduled to start construction soon. What happens to the current Line 7 - will it be labeled "Jinzhou West Line"? (I know it's a branch of Line 3 and both are called "Jinzhou West Line ...) Will the numbers only be valid for the metro and the suburban lines will get names, like in Beijing?

I wonder what fate tram line 202 will face after Metro Line 1 phase 2 opening: on urbanrail.net map they seem to share the same path. I do hope Dalian authorities won't discontinue tram service: it would be a tragic day for this ancient and formerly wide system; in that case there also will be too many tramcars for a single line and they could withdraw and scrap either the DL6WA/DL6WC series, in the prime of their life, or the recently refurbished “Witt type” DL3000 series, that would be even more sorrowful.

I ran this article through Google Translate. It's hilarious:

The same day, Dalian Metro is like a beautiful girl to be married, slim, ready, looking forward to the arrival of the first wave of early morning on the 30th test ride the public! Need to be reminded: the subway, some cold, test ride must wear more clothes.

Dalian Metro - 2015.04.30 - opening of Line 2

It's official. It's open! And there's an article in English to prove it.

The city’s subway line 2, including a total of 17 stations such as Conference Center, Gangwan Square, Zhongshan Square, Youhao Square, Qingniwaqiao, Yi’erjiujie, People’s Square, Lianhe Road, Xi’an Road, Jiaotong University, Liaoning Normal University, Malan Square, Wanjia, Hongqi Road(W), Hongjin Road, Honggang Road and Dalian Airport, sees its first batch of about 10,000 passengers today. Finally! I see they have renamed Xinan Jie to Jiaotong Daxue (Wasn't that in Shanghai?). Also I spotted they have added an extra stop named Donghai between Donggang and Haizhiyun.

It seems Xinzhaizi, Donggang and Donghai are opening soon, seeing the line diagrams.

Not yet . Neither Wikipedia in either English or Chinese nor the so-called Baidupedia are updated.

Dalian is the Istanbul of China - subway system consists of a bunch of disjointed parts.

How much of the system is underground? Wikipedia says just over 1 km but the pictures imply a much longer underground route.

Line 2 is completely underground. The other lines 3,7,8 are mostly elevated as they are more suburban lines.

Do the suburban lines include an underground station?

Is the metro station right at Dalian's jichang, or is there a bus shuttle transfer involved?

The jichang is right where Dalian jichang is, so no.

It seems you're right - all three stations are still not opened, according Baidu Maps:
http://map.baidu.com/

Timetable with station names - there are 17 stations:
