in indonesia, the total km of freeways/highways (all toll roads) is 630 km. This is considered very small considering Indonesia was one of the first at starting building freeways/highways in the Southeast Asia region with the Jagorawi Toll road opened in 1978

[EUR] Database of the motorway network in Europe

A nice feature on the nif.hu (Hungarian Infrastructure Company) site shows the history of the motorways in this country, as a consecutive set of maps since 1963 until today. To see it go to www.nif.hu and then click "Térkép animáció (A gyorsforgalmi hálózat fejlesztése Magyarországon 1963 - 2010)", right below the search box in the upper left part of the screen.

This got me thinking of a nice and ambitious innitiative for the entire Europe. Maybe even go further and extend it in the future (expected opening dates), or build some kind of database, with more information.

We all know the http://motorways-exitlists.com/ site, but there could be so much more than that! It is somehow frustrating that in between us we know so much about this, and yet there is no systematic place where this knowledge is located.
Perhaps we could start with the information available at http://motorways-exitlists.com/ and translate it to a map (or maybe even better, directly to GE!) and add historical data (like construction start and opening dates).

I am sure this would be easy, once we agree on a data standard and fill in procedure. I am sure we would find volunteers from each country to bring in the data.

PS: I used EUR and not EU in the thread title so that we don't exclude non-EU countries in Europe with beautiful motorway systems (HR etc.)

Your statistics thread is only about existing motorways, right? wdw35 also wants to add when they were constructed and he wants to add future motorways.

Well, I started with simplified form. Wiki can include other stuff as well, plans etc

Just the thing is that I don't know how to start with Wiki

Great presentation. But I thought the A6 (Szczecin bypass) was also an old German Reichsautobahn. It says it was built between 1997 and 2007.

Nope. I like the idea of a Highways & Autobahns wiki-database though.

It would be a ultimate databse of road infrastructure

I read the above-mentioned link (the "statistics" thread). I hope we don't make the same mistake here - i.e. everyone starts to list information from their country, randomly organized, before we agree on a clear format for the data.

My proposal is the following:

1. Go ahead and start expanding data on the data frame present at http://motorways-exitlists.com/. Here are some good examples on how some motorways are structured on this page:
http://motorways-exitlists.com/europe/h/m6.htm
http://motorways-exitlists.com/europe/a/a10.htm
http://motorways-exitlists.com/europe/d/a10.htm

Of course, before expanding on the history of construction, we could take out some less-relevant data (i.e. bridges or tunnels <200 m; maybe service areas...).
Also one should introduce a column with km chainage (at least when this doesn't correspond to exit number).
Of course, we should request permission from the creator of this great site, Michael Halabica.

2. In parallel, start creating a GIS/map based system with all the geographical information and links to tables.

I saw the idea of visualising the history of the motorways first on CBRD.
So I started to present the stats I found in a similar way.
I'd love to see more of this stuff for other countries.

No he wasn't. He just abused the motorway for propaganda values.
