That list is outdated anyway. China has 65.000 km and the USA 100.000 km

Sometimes, wikipedia doesn’t seems to be very accurate, for example they say Australia has about 16000kms of Expressway, which seems to me as highly unlikely.

Any comments or corrections are very welcome.

Before i starting to figure this out, i thought, there were some 270.000 kilometers of motorway/expressways on our globe, and, it seems to be i was quite close to that.

I've amended the China figure below as they've added about 10000km in the past 10months. It should reach 76,114 km by the end of 2010.

Im still confused with the list, are expressways counted yes or no? It would explain the weird high positions of some countries.

The list contains all roads: highways, motorways, expressways, freeways...
those have dual carriageway (four or more lanes) and are grade separated (access controlled, limited-access).

Not only motorways.

Well. Some up to date info -

Slovakia has about 605 km of M/E (D/R) roads. (Thank God 110 km U/C and another 50 km or even more next year)
Cezch republic has 1 147 km.
Hungary has 1288,4 km.

I don't know how many but Spain has much more km of motorways. It is about 14000/15000.

According to this post - http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=2954 , Bulgaria has 444km motorways and 164km under construction. The information has to be updated in the list above.

I think Ukraine has around 200 kilometers of road that could be considered motorways. The 1770 km figure may be right for regular 2x2 roads, there are quite a lot of them.

Obviously, if it's grade separated and at least 2x2 it counts.

This is a genuine Expressway, since it has a dual carriageway (with four lines), in which the two directions of traffic are separated by a central barrier, and with limited access and grade separated junctions
I guess yes i should be counted
Quote:
Dual carriageway

A dual carriageway (divided highway) is a highway in which the two directions of traffic are separated by a central barrier or strip of land, known as a central reservation (median). It may also have limited access and grade separated junctions. Where more than 1 lane is provided in each direction this type of road is usually able to carry a great deal more traffic than normal single carriageways (undivided highways). A dual carriageway may described as dual single lane, dual 2-lane or dual 3-lane. In the United Kingdom the term is used for a road with divided carriageways that is not a motorway.

In that case, the list should be updated -

Morocco has 1779 km at the moment then.

Next year over 300km will open. (A9)

In 2011 it should be 1420 km (Toll) Highways + 660 km (Free) Expressways
so the sum is 2080 km

Israel 126 km
This is extremely outdated- according to wikipedia the actual figure is 320 kilometers, highway 6 alone is 140 kilometers long:
