What standard should be considered to calculate how many kms of expressway has a country? Our standards (only roads that could be expressways if in Europe) or their standards (all roads that are regarded as expressways according to local standards in India, Russia, Brazil,...)?

In real life, electronic toll collection was first introduced in Bergen, Norway in 1986, and well into the 21th century many countries still struggle to implement it.

Even within Europe, there is a huge difference in the quality of non-tolled access-controlled highways and expressways across various countries. Some European countries have a much better-quality highway and expressway network than other European nations.

Poland has also other dual carriageway no-collision roads called GP (Główna Przyspieszona - Main Faster), which may be fragments of national roads (like German Kraftfahrstraßen) - length 479 km and 44 km in construction (source http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...&postcount=989). Also may be added for this list ca. 1000 km dual carriageway collision roads built in Polish People Republic (called often "Gierkówka" for Edward Gierek).

ChrisZwolle, where do you know the data for Greece from? Eurostat has shown only 1120 km for 2009.

These are the approximate numbers for Greece (first number indicates open section; second full length).

A1: 471/550Km
A2: 658/670Km (minus 12Km in common with the A1; counted under the A1)
A3: 0/175Km
A4: 0/65Km
A5: 70/515Km
A6: 65/65Km
A7: 140/150Km
A8: 184/184Km (Korinthos – Rio section is actually under dualling process but the whole route has GSJ and… toll is paid)
A11: 11/11Km
A12: 0/40Km
A13: 0/40Km
A20: 0/5Km
A25: 110/200Km (minus 7Km in common with the A2; counted under the A2)
A27: 40/100Km
A29: 54/75Km
A52: 0/50Km
A62: 4/4Km
A64: 20/20Km
A65: 3/5Km
A71: 0/100Km
A90: 35/200Km (although 187Km have been characterized as motorway I count only the ‘real’ motorway sections)
A581: 2/5Km
A642: 2/2Km

Total: 1869 plus the 152Km ‘nominal’ of the A90 = 2021Km (expected length of the so far designated and tendered projects = 3212Km).

There are also about 140Km classified as expressways, but are mainly single carriageways with GSJ.

I think we should count roads on that you can drive 80-120 km/h without stops: no crossroads, no traffic lights (except that it's a jam ).
So, if a road like this one below is also counted? I would say yes.

What about Ireland?

I don't see any figures for Ireland, which should be just outside the top 40.

The lengths at 31.12.2013 were 897.246 km motorway and 297.653 km dual carriageway. There have been no new motorways opened since then, but another 16.38 km is due to be added in late summer of this year with the opening of the M11 Arklow - Rathnew scheme.

Source: NRA Route Lengths at 31.12.2013.

A highway can be anything from a dirt track, to a gravel road, to a two way asphalt roadway, to a 12 lane motorway/freeway. A highway is not a specific road type.
A motorway is a specific road type (often called a freeway or expressway). A limited access highway with separated carriageways and grade separated junctions.

Yes sure, but many persons make this same confusion cause the term motorway in not too much used in North America and Australia.

IMO the european terms are quite better significant are more commonly used without confusion:

De: Autobahn
Fr: Autoroute
Sp: Autopista
It: Autostrada

Motorway is used in parts of Australia, in other parts they use freeway.
