but only the north circular counts as a motorway type ring. The others are just non-purpose built pre-existing roads renamed. Ther south circular is almost pointless.

Nah it's nowhere near perfect, I know that. But it's still a ringway. I wouldn't have liked to have seen four big motorways splitting up the city either though, but some improvements to the 'inner rings' would be nice.

Mexico City ring road...
No space for a fourth or fifth lane so they decided to build a second and third decks.

The Marginais in Sao Paulo are quite wide as well - and both together (Tiete and Pinheiros) probably about 80km. Count the lanes

There is "Swiss Cottage" but that's northwest of the center. This one looks more like Battersea

Agree. There's that funny bit on the north circular near the BP garage and SEAT garage that goes down to one lane doesn't it? Mental. It needs touching up, but I agree, I do not want to see motorways built through London (though I'd prefer that than beautiful countryside) - for example I'm glad the rest of the M23 was never finished.

Highway 1, also known as M1, A1 or B1 depending on the state you're in (and road quality), not only stretches from coast to coast but roughly follows the coast along the entire country.

Surely it's not a fully 4 lanes (I ran on it from Montreal to Toronto and out of the two cities the highway has three or two lanes for the whole run), but I knew that in 'the middle' of Canada, where pratically the traffic doesn't exist, the 'highway' becomes a simple road with one lane per direction

The longest stretch of 2x4 lane highway in Australia would have to be the M1 between Gaven and Logan. It's about 45Km.

Since you are looking for the lnogest 4 lane highway branch, I would say probably the BosWash area has the most.

and at ale26,

That's not that big of a deal! the Trans-Canada Highway is a Highway SYSTEM, not one highway. And anyway, check out I-80, stretches from New York to San Francisco. And I-90, from Seattle to Boston!

Well... I must say that untill now, no one has given a clear example of an 8 lane (4 in each directian) freeway longer than that one which is going to be build (enlarged) in between Milan and Bologna (~200Km).

People are just saying thing like: "This area is very crowded with freeways.... there are probably some very long ones"

I've just checked the BosWash area and I'm quite sure there isn't any 200 km long 8 lane freeway in that area.

COMUNIDAD DE MADRID

In the area of Madrid the longest 4 lanes sector in a highway is A-6/AP-6 from Madrid (km0) to San Rafael (km60). It has normally some more extra lanes, for the local traffic and between Madrid and Las Rozas (km20) it has a central express ones.

in Nashvile TN USA we have many stretches of 4 lanes or greater. the largest, which may not compare to all these others, but has 8 lanes each directions at some points. its I65 on the north side.

longest 4+4 lane stretch of freeway in AUstralia will be in Melbourne which will stretch 75km when completed in 2010. It'll also have sections of 6+6 and 5+5 lanes.

I heard that there are plans, to widen the French A7 from Lyon to Orange to 2x5 lanes. That is some 200 km too.
