Star Alliance welcomes SWISS as its newest member. More frequent flyer benefits and flight options for customers.

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND - April 7th, 2006 - At a ceremony held in Zurich today, Star Alliance, the airline network for EarthTM, welcomed Swiss International Air Lines into the alliance as its 17th member. With immediate effect, customers travelling on flights operated by SWISS, will benefit from all the advantages which the members of the alliance offer. These include, among others, a network of more than 15,500* daily flights serving 842* destinations in 152* countries, through check-in, mileage redemption and collection and access to more than 660* lounges.

"With SWISS, our alliance has gained a high-quality airline with a strong brand. We now provide more choice to our customers, especially on key European and intercontinental business routes. Moreover, with Switzerland being the traditional base for many corporate clients, we look forward to offering our customer benefits to even more travellers than before," said Jaan Albrecht, Star Alliance CEO.

"For SWISS, joining Star Alliance is a major strategic milestone," said SWISS CEO Christoph Franz at the formal accession ceremony. "It creates a comprehensive network of air services and connections for our passengers that truly spans the globe. The co-branding of aircraft among Star Alliance members also helps to raise the awareness of the alliance and its benefits among our customers. And we are proud to carry the Star Alliance logo on our aircraft throughout our route network."

With Zurich now being an alliance hub, Star Alliance offers flight connections through no less than 11 European hubs - Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London – Heathrow, Lisbon, Madrid, Manchester, Munich, Stockholm, Vienna, Warsaw and Zurich – more than any other alliance. In addition to its extensive European network, SWISS offers long-haul flights to key destinations in North and South America, Africa and Asia, complementing the existing network, and in some cases adding new destinations like Benghazi (Libya), Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), Douala and Yaounde (Cameroon) and Nairobi (Kenya).

At Zurich Airport, First and Business Class customers flying on any Star Alliance member carrier as well as Star Alliance Gold Card holders now have the choice of using either the Star Alliance Lounge or the SWISS Lounge.Members in SWISS' Frequent Flyer Programme Miles & More can now collect and redeem miles when travelling on flights operated by any of the other Star Alliance member carriers. The accumulated miles will also count towards their tier status - Star Alliance Gold and Star Alliance Silver - which entitles customers to a range of benefits across the alliance network.

Last, but not least, SWISS now participates in and sells the 11 different Star Alliance fare products, such as the Round the World fare, North American Airpass, the Brazilian Airpass, European Airpass, Asian Airpass, Visit Thailand Airpass and Visit Japan Airpass. Moreover, SWISS also offers the Star Alliance's conventions product, Conventions Plus, which provides travel solutions tailored to the needs of convention organisers and participants.

About Star Alliance
Star Alliance was established in 1997 as the first truly global airline alliance to offer customers worldwide reach and a smooth travel experience. Star Alliance was voted Best Airline Alliance by Skytrax in 2003 and 2005. The members are Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, bmi, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways*, Spanair, SWISS, TAP Portugal, THAI, United, US Airways and VARIG Brazilian Airlines. Regional member carriers Adria Airways (Slovenia), Blue1 (Finland) and Croatia Airlines enhance the global network. Overall, Star Alliance offers more than 15,500* daily flights to 842* destinations in 152* countries.

About SWISS
SWISS is Switzerland's national airline, serving 69 destinations around the world from its Zurich hub and from Basel and Geneva international airports with its 67-aircraft fleet. As member of Star Alliance and future part of the Lufthansa Group, SWISS will remain true to its mission of providing quality air services that link Switzerland with Europe and the world. SWISS will also continue to develop its service with its traditional values of quality, reliability and hospitality, and to develop its strong market presence as the Swiss national carrier.

I had read a report earlier that Star Alliance was looking to add a member from India and China respectively, given the growing aviation market in the two nations.

I think its Jet Airways from India and I am not sure about the airline from China.

This news is from August 2005:

Jet Airways, Sahara Airlines may join Star Alliance

Now Sahara Airlines has been brought over by Jet Airways, therefore I am pretty certain Jet will be a star alliance member within the next few years. I think the only hinderance is thebad quality of airports, but that will chance circa 2009.

TAP Portugal is the leading Portuguese airline, established in March 1945 and in operation now for 60 years. Its hub in Lisbon is a key gateway into and out of Europe and a crossroads to continents such as Africa, North and South America. TAP’s current network comprises 42 destinations in 25 countries in Europe and Africa, as well as North, Central and South America, where the company stands out as the leading European carrier in operation in Brazil.

TAP is currently operating 38 weekly frequencies to Brazil, with direct daily flights departing Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Recife, Salvador and Fortaleza and three weekly flights to Natal and is to increase its operation to 39 frequencies a week during next IATA Summer 2005 period.

A wider range of destinations beyond its own network is also available, served by code-share operations with a number of partner-airlines. Thus, TAP offers customers an extended and highly flexible choice while providing them with the most convenient scheduled flights and easy connectivity onto more distant points.

A modern fleet with the latest in comfort

TAP operates a modern fleet of 40 Airbus aircraft: 6 A-310’s and 4 A-340’s in operation on the long haul sector and 16 A-319’s; 3 A-321’s and 11 A-320’s on the medium range.

Pursuing a strategy focused on the continuous enhancement of the product delivered to customers, TAP has been improving its service quality and redesigned its route network.

As a result of the recent upgrade of TAP’s Top Executive Class service, customers can enjoy the very latest in comfort, with full-recline seats on board the A-340 and A-310 fleets, providing individual video screen (A-340) and individual DVD players (A-310) along with several entertainment channels, extra space and privacy, plugs for laptops and back and head rests with four positions.

Within that framework, TAP has also implemented a menu renovation programme, including the introduction of new menus served on Top Executive Class developed all the way with the collaboration of a Portuguese Chef.

The “taste of Portugal” concept has been the main driver of this thorough process, based upon the Portuguese genuine gastronomy with the utilization of national quality products and a selected list of Portuguese wines. As of May 2004, TAP introduced new light meals on board the Economy class on European (medium haul flights) as well.

TAP PORTUGAL – The New Corporate Image launched in February 2005

TAP completes its 60th. anniversary on March 14, 2005. Therefore and marking such a landmark in its history, the Company designed an initiative programme meant to celebrate the occasion. As a first step, on February 1st, 2005, TAP launched its New Corporate Image, the aim of which is not only to affirm TAP’s “portugality” concept but also to reinforce its current positioning as a modern and global airline.

This New Look of TAP Portugal, with a new logo and a new vibrant colour scheme translates the airline’s prestige, balance and competitiveness whilst it also intends to add attractiveness, lightness and joy to TAP’s corporate identity.

From now on, TAP Portugal will pursue its New Corporate Image implementation, which includes the whole fleet along with all the Company’ s equipment and supports, within the next three years. The programme will also extend to the design and launching of new uniforms, this process being due for completion by the end of this year.

Both Avianca-TACA and Copa to join Star Alliance

Quote:
Star announced at an event today in Miami that Avianca-TACA and Copa will become its second and third Latin American members after Brazil's TAM, which formally joined earlier this year. Avianca-TACA and Copa will begin the implementation process, which typically takes one year to 18 months.

Concerning TAM we will see what the future is going to be about. Their merger with LAN and the above-noted news reduce the probability of new LATAM as Star Alliance member, I suppose.

Star Alliance 2010 embraces:

Adria Airways
Aegean Airlines
Air Canada
Air China
Air New Zealand
ANA
Asiana
Austrian
Blue 1
BMI
Brussels Airlines
United
Croatia Airlines
EgyptAir
LOT
Lufthansa
SAS
Singapore Airlines
South African
Spanair
Swiss
TAM
TAP
Thai
Turkish Airlines
US Airways

Star acceptance of Avianca-TACA excludes Avianca Brazil for now
Quote:
... Star announced earlier today that Avianca-TACA and Panama's Copa have been accepted as new members. Avianca-TACA and Star executives explain that all passenger carriers in both groups have been accepted as Star members with the single exception of Avianca Brazil because it is not currently owned by Avianca-TACA's new holding company.

Avianca Brazil's CEO, Jose Efromovich, says this ownership issue "is just a formality" and once it is resolved Avianca Brazil will also apply to become part of Star. He explains that currently Avianca Brazil is fully owned by Synergy Aerospace, the holding company controlled by the Efromovich family. But he says the intention is ownership in Avianca Brazil will be transferred in 2011 to the new holding company created from the merger of Avianca and TACA, which was completed in February. ...

Complement: Air India and Ethiopian Airlines are going to join Star Alliance next year.
