I thought this type of thread (us v. them/ country v. country) was not allowed any more?

The Highways forum is the last bastion of wild anarchy on SSC.

The quality of the surfaces on the UK's highways are going downhill rapidly since the Highways Agency has insisted on using crappy stone mastic asphalt over hot rolled asphalt. Stone mastic aspalt may deceptively look and feel nice and smooth and sound quiet after it's first laid, but after a few frosts and a bit of traffic the surface soon becomes full of hairline cracks and potholes and is lucky to last 10 years. By comparison hot rolled asphalt, whilst it is not as smooth and generates a tad more road noise (not as bad as concrete though), is better at reducing surface water and lasts longer as it's more resilient to the freeze-thaw weather cycles that the UK experiences every winter.

One of the major private Design Build Finance and Operate contractors which operates the A19 has switched back to using hot-rolled asphalt as it had to rip up surfaces that were surfaced with stone mastic asphalt every couple of years.

De portalen hangen nogal hoog, je kan vanaf de fietsbrug er net onderdoor fotograferen. Dat lukt je elders niet.

That's lovely, but why can't it just go in the Dutch thread rather than in this idiotic whose-thing-is-longer thread?

I am dismayed this topic has degenerated into petty name calling.

Standards and expectations on what motorways/highways are supposed to do vary slightly from country to country (in this case between Europe and US), as do the cities and rural environments they serve.

One of the reasons European Metros do not require as complex junctions as their US counterparts has to do with the fact they tend to be centred around a Historical centre thus making it impractical to have a single large motorway/highway/feeway running right throught.

Instead, they tend to have a series of ringroads with suburban motorways/highways feeding onto it at various points (in a radial pattern).

Example 1. Lisbon, Portugal

Naturally, cross country motorways/higways have a different feel to them, largely because of different constraints/traffic requirements.

The same happens in Porto Metro Area, also in Portugal:

A cogently-argued position....

Will someone please lock this?
