Balikpapan, Petroleum city of Indonesia

Balikpapan is a city (population 546,380 as of 2005) on the island of Borneo, in Indonesia. It is the second largest city in the province of East Kalimantan. It is located on an inlet of Makassar Strait, about 115 km from Samarinda, the capital city of East Kalimantan. Mostly surrounded by sea, Balikpapan is an important center of the petroleum, mining, and timber industries.

The city is sometimes called the "Main Gate" of Kalimantan. It has one international airport, called Sepinggan, several harbors such as Semayang and Somber, and one port for the petroleum industry plus the future Kariangau international port.

Beside of that, Balikpapan is well known as the richest, cleanest, and one of the safest city in Indonesia.

Surrounded by a bay and strait, called Balikpapan Bay and Makassar strait, the city also has potential for business, such as trades and tourism. Many diverse people live in this peaceful city; Dayak, Bugis, Javanese, and some foreigners.

Kutai Kartanegara is the richest Kabupaten in Indonesia, while Balikpapan is the richest/wealthiest for the city

Liputan6.com, Jakarta: Badan Pusat Statistik kembali melakukan kalkulasi dan analisis Indeks Pembangunan Manusia dan sejumlah Indeks Komposit Manusia Indonesia di 341 kota dan kabupaten di Indonesia. Hasil perhitungan menyebutkan, Kota Balikpapan, Kalimantan Timur, menempati urutan pertama atau paling makmur. Sedangkan Jayawijaya, Papua, di posisi terakhir atau termiskin dalam Indeks Kemiskinan Manusia (IKM). Demikian pengumuman yang dikeluarkan BPS di Jakarta, baru-baru ini.

Menurut pembuat data indeks BPS, Razali Ritonga, IKM mengukur ketertinggalan dalam aspek kehidupan. Kemudian direpresentasikan dengan manusia yang tidak berumur panjang atau tak lebih dari 40 tahun dan sehat. Termasuk menghitung tingkat buta huruf usia dewasa, jumlah penduduk tanpa akses air bersih, dan sarana kesehatan, serta bawah lima tahun kurang gizi.

Berdasarkan perhitungan, Ritonga menambahkan, Jakarta Utara berada di urutan kedua kota termakmur. Disusul Salatiga, Jawa Tengah; Surabaya, Jawa Timur; dan Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan. Selanjutnya, hasil hitungan itu akan digunakan sebagai acuan menyusun rencana pembangunan di masa mendatang.(ANS/Christiyanto dan Erwin Arief)

Kota Balikpapan, "Ibu Kota"-nya Kalimantan

MEMASUKI usia ke-107 tahun pada 10 Februari lalu, banyak orang memberi julukan Balikpapan sebagai "ibu kota" Kalimantan. Memang cuma berkelakar. Namun, kelakar tersebut sebenarnya tidak berlebihan.

DIBANDINGKAN dengan kota mana pun di Kalimantan, Balikpapan jauh lebih unggul, bahkan dengan ibu kota provinsi sekalipun. Padahal, Balikpapan bukan ibu kota provinsi.

Ibu kota Provinsi Kalimantan Timur berada di Samarinda. Namun, Markas Kepolisian Daerah Kaltim, Kejaksaan Tinggi, Telkom Kalimantan, hingga Markas Komando Daerah Militer (Kodam) VI Tanjungpura, berada di Kota Balikpapan. Kodam VI Tanjungpura meliputi seluruh wilayah Kalimantan, sedangkan di setiap provinsi ada komando resor militer (korem).

Dari segi infrastruktur, Balikpapan juga paling lengkap dibanding kota lainnya di Kalimantan. Bandar Udara Sepinggan, misalnya, melayani lebih dari 15 maskapai penerbangan domestik maupun internasional. Pergerakan penumpang 1,4 juta pada tahun 2003, yang berarti termasuk bandara tersibuk di Tanah Air setelah Bandara Soekarno-Hatta.

Jalur penerbangannya bukan cuma melayani kota-kota besar di Tanah Air, tetapi juga menjangkau daerah pedalaman, baik carter maupun reguler, sehingga Balikpapan menjadi "gerbang masuk" Provinsi Kalimantan Timur. Bahkan, penerbangan internasional dilayani langsung dari Balikpapan.

Dari segi ekonomi, perkembangan produk domestik regional bruto (PDRB) yang menjadi indikator perkembangan daerah sangat mengagumkan. Perkembangan rata-rata total PDRB atas dasar harga berlaku 10 tahun terakhir Rp 6,69 triliun atau mengalami pertumbuhan rata-rata 16,63 persen per tahun. Adapun perkembangan rata-rata total PDRB atas dasar harga konstan 10 tahun terakhir Rp 3,51 triliun atau tumbuh rata-rata 5,41 persen per tahun.

Pendapatan per kapita, yang sering dijadikan indikator kesejahteraan ekonomi masyarakat, juga sangat mengagumkan. Pendapatan per kapita penduduk Kota Balikpapan yang berjumlah 521.000 jiwa ini pada tahun 2002 Rp 21,06 juta, sedang tahun 2003 menjadi Rp 24 juta atau termasuk paling tinggi di seluruh Tanah Air.
