UCLA AND WESTWOOD VILLAGE | Development News

Anyone have any pics of this area? I think the neighborhood is called Westwood? I just recently looked at one of their grad programs and I may apply. I never been to the West Coast though. Is this part of LA easy to get around without a car? Thanks.

There are lots of busses that run in and out of UCLA to all parts of the city as well as the Valley, Culver City, and Santa Monica. I don't really have any pictures, but its Westwood is a VERY nice neighborhood and youll the price to live there. one bedrooms are atleast $1500 a month. there are much better priced neighborhoods not that far away that you can get to by bus very easily. Palms is one of those neighborhoods. You should do a search for rental prices on craigslist to get a good idea of the how much it costs to live in LA.

Wow, I sure would like to be in your shoes. Westwood, it is like a beach city, with people living in white residential towers, but much more expensive. It'll be really cool if go there, I guarantee it -Mens Warehouse-LOL.

well, it looks like prices are similar to that of Boston as far as housing.

I may apply becaus the program sounds pretty neat, and I just want ot make sure I have lot sof options. I wonder...does this area get earthquakes and flooding? Coming from the East Coast, I'm not hat used ot natural disasters....lol

Westwood is a great place, a bit expensive but if you can afford it go for it! Natural disasters.... Earthquakes happen, but its not a daily occurence. usually there is one or two 4 -5 magnitude earthquakes a year, and the last one to really cause any damage or rattle a little more than nerves was Jan 17th, 1993 at 4:31 AM, otherwise known as the Northridge earthquake. Flooding is not a concern for the LA Basin, just the foothills of the mountains and you are about 30 miles away from that so dont worry. if you live in westwood, you will be near many things, from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, to the beach and Westwood and your not to far from Sunset and Hollywood. Your also a bus ride from Downtown and all the things there and your close to LAX and over the hill from the Valley. You are in a very safe neighborhood with a Villiage right there. Plus you would be a Bruin.

as frustrating as public transit in LA can get sometimes, UCLA is one of the best transport hub in LA. We have 5 "Santa Monica Big Blue Bus" routes, at least 1-2 "Culver City Green Bus" routes, and another coupon MTA routes that goes directly to campus.

The big blue bus is the main public transit for UCLA, with routes going to all the nearby apt clusters, including Brentwood, Westwood, Palms, even all the way to Santa Monica. Since u said ur applying to grad school, if u r lucky enuf to get school housing, which most likely would b at the univeristy apts on Sepulveda or Sawtelle, those apts are accessible to and from campus by free UCLA shuttles and Big Blue Bus #12 and #8.

For more info u should check out bigbluebus.com :-)

hope this helps

P.S. Westwood is ridiculously expensive due to large number of students fighting for apartments... the only good thing about Westwood Village is the proximity to campus and parties... campus is 20 minutes - 25 minutes away, and parties are just 15 minutes away on Gayley Ave (the frat row)... the downside, aside from ridiculous prices like $1200 studio with the view of the wall of nxt building, are the HORRID parking situation and student noise. the close u live to campus to louder the party noises.

My own example: I lived on Rochester Ave, it's far from Wilshire coz it's south of Westwood (and westwood is south of the campus), but the school provides a free shuttle every 15 min and there's a stop 2 blocks from my street. I paid 2025 for a 2 bedroom and shared it with 3 others. The year after I lived in Palms, quite far from campus, but the 2 bedroom is only 1400. I take the BBB #12 to school and it takes about 30-40 minutes without traffic and its only 25 cents. It's a much quieter neighborhood and my guests never have trouble finding parking.

I love Westwood and it's one of my favorite shopping centres if not Third St. or Melrose. Actually Westwood is sort of where I interchange for transport whether I'm going to Sta. Monica or Hollywood. Anyway, I love the food there like La Monicas NY Pizza and Hollywood Fries. Too bad though Hollywood Fries is gone! The Blockbuster video in that area was where I rent movies when I was there.

I miss Westwood alot!!!

I like The Gypsy Cafe, but they have really jacked up their prices, also the boba tea shops. And Feast from the East on Westwood Blvd. I also ate at this Moroccan resteraunt on westwood.

Just curious, Is Falafel King and Tower Records still there in Westwood Village? I'll be going to LA this June and can't wait to see the place again.
