^ the vince vaughn's and chris farley's of the world i can handle living here, but i hope and pray that we never become a paris hilton south beach celebrity douche bag festival type of city, and fortunately, chicago being chicago, that ain't never gonna happen............... which is nice.

LA, Vegas, and Miami have WARM WEATHER. New York is...well, New York, and the winters aren't quite as cold or snowy as Chicago's. A great Midwesterner named Prince (Rogers Nelson) once said that he liked living in frigid Minneapolis because "it keeps the bad people out." (See the unauthorized biography by I-forget-whom.) So, maybe pop music's greatest genius was onto something -- upper Midwest winters are kind of Darwinian. I mean, think of all the annoying airheads in South Florida or Southern California who would simply *perish* in Chicago or Minneapolis in January (or October)!

it begs a question I have often wondered how much would CHi's pop be if we had say a climate akin to Atlanta at least in winter.....that is temp primarily in the 50's, some 60's and occasional chilly weather.
I mean would there ever have been the pop loss that started sometime in the 50's .....and would we be experiencing a sun-belt type boom currently? just a silly though perhaps fun exercise |

What about famous athletes? Rumor has it, Greg Maddux and Ed McCaffrey bought units at 840 N LSD.

This just isn't a celebrity-obsessed town. Funny, given how very active the home-grown theater scene is here. Chicago doesn't really reward display and ostentation the way that NYC & LA do - too much preening = pretension. Remember when American Idol came to town last year? I think they had to resort to spiking people's drinks and dragging them unconcious to the stage, just to get an audience.

Something I just learned that's kind of interesting. An actor that some of you may have not heard of, Jeremy Piven, is from chicago (he is in "Entourage", a great show on HBO). His parents started the Piven Theatre Workshop, which apparently the Cusicks had some training at. He still comes back to Chicago frequently to assist in this workshop.
I actually really like him as an actor, and think he's really funny and witty. |

Yep. He's one of our many "Chicago boyz".
Have you noticed that these Chicago actors tend to be big talkers? That is, people who are good at filling a scene with much creative dialogue.

I think when people say celebrities, they are referring to Hollywood's A-list. Let's be honest people...
CELEBRITIES = EXCITEMENT. And i'm not talking about retired athletes or oprah. With that said, as much as you say you prefer not having celebrities, it's hard to buy. It's more or less you guys coming up with reasons why they aren't in Chicago, and putting your own spin on it calling it a 'good thing'. |

Meh. Frankly, I'm surprised Steely hasn't closed this highly irrelevant thread yet.

Danielle Campbell - A talented young actress who is only 17 but acted in the movies Prom & Starstruck. In an interview, she said LA was really good but she prefers living in Chicago where she grew up.

1. Awful thread, but...
2. Why hasn't anyone pointed out the little matter of causal direction? Most national media doesn't originate in Chicago; "show business" is in LA and to a lesser extent NYC, Las Vegas, etc. It's not that people magically start as celebrities and then move to LA or NYC; people who already live in (or already moved to) LA or NYC become celebrities, because those are places where celebrities are made.
