I LOVE HAWAII. WHO WOULD NOT!!

ANYWAY I THINK THE MAX HEIGHT FOR ANY TYPE OF TOWERS SHOULD BE AROUND 500'FT.

HONOLULU AND WAIKIKI IS LOCATED VERY CLOSE TO THE AIRPORT AND I 'M SURE THE FAA WILL NOT ALLOW ANYTHING HIGHER THAN THAT.
I THINK THAT'S PERFECT THE WAY IT IS; IT MATCHES REALLY GOOD WITH THE LANDSCAPE OF THE CITY.

OAHU IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL AND I DON'T THINK IT WILL BE NICE TO BUILD TO MANY HIGH TOWERS.

KEOLA LAI TOWER

Under Construction:

1. Keola Lai - 42 Stories - 387 Ft.

www.keolalai.com
I LOVE KEOLA LAI , THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE BEST IN HAWAII ALSO BECAUSE IT IS LOCATED IN A QUITER AREA WHERE THERE IS NOT TOO MUCH TRAFFIC AND IN THE SAME TIME IT'S ONLY 1 MILE AWAY FROM THE BEACH AND THE MALL.
KEOLA LAI WILL LOOK REALLY MODERN AND ALSO THERE WILL BE GREAT AMENETIES.
IT'S GOING TO BE READY SOMETIMES IN MARCH OR APRIL OF 08.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT.

The water table is just 3 (900mm) feet below the surface on average. Even with a few stories of paking below grade, with the zoning code parking requirements for each property, you still have to have a couple stories above ground. Usually, it's vastly cheaper to build everything above ground, even for the taller structures.

Near the shore, you have a "table" type subterranian shape, with a "ledge" of volcanic earth forming sort of a "hat brim" around each island only a so thick.

Most of the taller structures are "raft" footings because when you drive large piles, many times they reach the bottom of the "ledge" and disappear into the ocean depths below - it's quite comical seeing the looks on the pile drivers' faces when that happens - they are all standing around staring into the deep hole!!!

We had trouble designing a bank building for a site off Ward Street in Kakaako, and it was too "short" to keep the building foundation below grade (structural analysis showed it would "pop up" because the total weight was insufficient). We even imagined taking wrecked autos and crushing them and putting them as an anchor as the lowest part of the foundation, but that became prohibitively pricey at the time. And the zoning code didn't allow us to "go higher" either.

There are some really nice new highrises and other developments now.

I took a bunch of pics when I was there in May. But I can't seem to get them off my cellphone!!! (the port is aparently broken, and I can't afford a new one right now).

I was surprised at my old hometown, having not been there for about 10 years or so!!!

The monekypod trees on Kapiolani Boulevard are absolutely huge now compared to before - they form a nice constant canopy from opposing sidewalks for most of the length now. Heard the new city forester is much more competant, so they don't masacre the trees anymore when they prune them.

A plan for a tower in Kakaako to stand 650 tall would allow other lofty buildings

690 Pohukaina Tower proposal

By Andrew Gomes

POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Oct 31, 2011

When Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced plans last week for soliciting a developer to build Hawaii’s tallest building — a 650-foot residential tower that would be 50 percent higher than the current record holder in Honolulu — he was talking about just one building.

New Tallest Tower For Honolulu

Hawaii Reporter

State Plans Towering Residential Skyscraper in Honolulu

Artist's Rendering of 690 Pohukaina Project

BY JIM DOOLEY - A soaring residential skyscraper that would tower over Honolulu’s highest buildings has been proposed by the state for development on Pohukaina Street in Kakaako.

The building could be as much as 650 feet high – more than 200 feet above the First Hawaiian Bank Center, which at 440 feet is the tallest structure in the Islands.

Called 690 Pohukaina, the project would also include two smaller residential and commercial towers as well as a parking structure and a civic/community center.

Governor Neil Abercrombie praised the proposed project, which won initial approval today from the Hawaii Community Development Authority.

“I think this project is tremendous,” Abercrombie told the HCDA board.

---

Sited along the planned route of the Honolulu Rapid Transit line, the project is envisioned to be a “transit oriented development” that combines high-density residential and commercial structures with access to multiple forms of public transportation.

“This development will provide housing choices and opportunities for a variety of people and families,” said Abercrombie. “But the first thing 690 Pohukaina does is create jobs in construction and business sectors. This is a combination of growing our economy and the creation of a thriving community.”

An already-approved rental housing component of the project is scheduled to break ground early next year.

Ching of HCDA said the agency will seek private development proposals for the remainder of the project and hopes to see completion of construction by 2019.

A 650-ft high skyscraper has been proposed for Honolulu. Will this be the only skyscraper proposed for Honolulu that surpasses the current height limit or will there be others? And if there are any others, how many should there be?
