I love this thread but I have to say that I'm not a fan of art-deco at all. Regardless, Sydney (and many Australian cities) have a lot of old and beautiful buildings scattered around everywhere and we're lucky to have them!

Culwulla, do you know the old Governor Office? It's a sandstone clad building, surrounded by Bridge St, Philip St and MacQuarie St.
Do you know much about the history?

Actually a lot of those buildings are still there either as podiums or buildings. They are just lost in the jungle of scrapers.

As far as modern skyscrapers go, AMP Building is getting on. Its now 45 years old.Its Australia's oldest-tall/large skyscraper. i think it still looks fabulous! love the curved bronze facade.

The AMP Building is my favourite from the 60's which wasn't really a great decade for architecture. Its looking very retro now, I think the choice of colour is great considering how much of the facade is panelled and not windows it has a big impact on the overall design. Still can't compete with the older buildings of the city though.

State Office Building - subtle clue! Demolished for Aurora Place. 1964... or a couple of years later? Damn.
Bonus Q: CAGA Centre, demolished for Gov Phillip Tower. (after much brain grinding and mind changing!!) Both gone: such is the price of fame. Last edited by Brizer; November 17th, 2007 at 11:38 PM. Reason: Overnight doubt |
