Hobart CBD (the colonial and the new)

Of late we have seen heaps of photos of Melbourne and plenty of Sydney. So I thought I'd go a different track and bring you a collection of photos I took during easter of Hobart's CBD. Hobart is an enjoyable city with great Australian colonial architecture, something that many other cities have long lost.

Hobart's CBD, specially near the docks and during autumn reminded me of a mix between Fremantle, Canberra and the Rocks in Sydney. Unlike The Rocks however, the place doesn't feel like a giant tourist trap. With the water and the mountains over looking down on it, it has at times an almost a Scandinavian feel to it.

Btw if many streets look dead, it is because i took most of the photos during public holidays. The best time to take photos of urban buildings (no cars blocking the views!)

Wow - what a beautiful city. Thank goodness somewhere is preserving the old buildings of the past and using them!!

I can't get over how much Hobart looks like Dunedin, they could almost be twins, only hope that Dunedin will do something brilliant, like Hobarts, with it's proposed water front development.

Lovely to see pictures of one Australias most beautiful capitals - lots more please!!

Cool, I am going to have to go down there for another visit, haven't been since 1989 and your pictures have inspired me to go again. Is the Casino the tallest building? I see HMAS Darwin was in town, as well as the Antartic supply ship.

Is the double decker bus a tourist thing, or regular PT in Hobart. How often do you get snow on the mountain behind Hobart?

Hobart is a very beautiful city. A place I wouldn't mind retiring to when i'm a little older. Every time I go to Tassy, I keep falling in love with it even more.

Yeah I love Tasmania, its a very underrated jewl in Australia, and very different to most of the country. There are many structures and buildings still in use today that are older then most Australian capital cities. I think people forget that Van Diemen's Land was quite large centre back in the day.

Aussie Bhoy: The Casino is still the tallest building. The double decker bus is a tourist thing, though it is not a tour bus. Rather it services a set time-table route to various tourist areas around the city and suburbs of Hobart.

And Dilaz89 is right, it is a Tasmania Tiger, which is found on the logo of Cascade.

I quite liked Hobart, but the city is ruined by its dependency on cars. For a city of it's size, I could not believe the ammount of traffic.

excellent collection.
lovely colonial architecture everywhere.
the cascade berwery bldg is quite special. "wedding cake style architecture". it was taller then any bldg in town in 1927.
atd- you will find most cap cities had or have a classic style T&G bldg & CML bldg. these were big insurance firms back in 1920's and 30's.
yes the tallest bldg in tassie still is the 73m/20st Wrest point casino tower. In the CBD its the 14st/58m AMP centre built 1968. there is talk of a 30storey near he quay as part of its redevelopment, but only talk atm.

That Colonial Mutual building (CML) is almost IDENTICAL to the one in Adelaide ( King William and Hindley ) except it looks a couple of floors shorter than Adel's.

Yeh, like on those Cascade ads that were on TV recently. You know, bathing in beer, experimenting with appropriate stubbie size. "So thankyou Peter Degraves..."

Great collection Ippgi. Although I was itching for a few skyline shots or some more pics of modern highrises. But those photos were great. I didn't realise quite how fortunate Hobart was with respect to heritage buildings. It's definately high up on my list of places to visit.

Hobart doesn't have much in the way of modern highrises. Most of the tall buildings were built in the late 1960's to the early 1980's and many are really nothing to write home about.

the CML in Hobart is 7 storeys while most other bldgs in oz cities were 10-12storeys. Sydney Architects Hennessey & Hennesey designed the CML's which are now heritage listed.love the art deco elements with lion heads ect.
most CMLs were steel framed and clad with reconstituted stone.
