Liberty Island - New Statue of Liberty Museum

Bigger Museum Will Give Lady Liberty’s Crowds More to Do Than Snap Selfies
NYTimes
ArchPaper

Quote:
The project, a $70 million museum, is intended to make the visitors’ time on Liberty Island more meaningful, more enjoyable and perhaps less crowded. The museum, to be announced at a ceremony on Thursday, has been designed to absorb the crush of people arriving on ferries that dock every 20 to 30 minutes.

Stephen A. Briganti, the president and chief executive of the private Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, said the new museum would do what the current one, in a former fort beneath the base of the statue, does, but on a larger and more accessible scale: tell the story of one of the world’s most famous symbols.

...He said the new building would have a green roof. Part of it will be planted with wildflowers; part will serve as a raised viewing platform, with the statue on one side and the Manhattan skyline on another.

...The statue’s original torch, replaced in the 1980s, will be installed in a glass-walled space, a stark contrast with its windowless home in the current museum. The new setting will let visitors look at that torch and its replacement at the same time.

Delivery: 2019

Probably a good idea. But I think the museum should get a more classical look involving stone, matching that of the Lady Liberty's podium.

Such a beautiful project, it could fit perfectly in the Landscape architecture thread.

It blends seemlessly with the rest of the island, I don't think it could've been designed any better. Great job by FXFowle.

Crazy, I was JUST wondering what was happening with the "transforming facade" building and had no idea what to search for. And here it is, looking better than any of renders. Thanks for posting.

It's quite amazing, definitely surpassed the renderings:

Financial District - 30 Park Place

The Courtyard between 30 park Place and the Woolworth building is still a work in progress, but coming along nicely. Looks like there might be some retail there too (in addition to loading dock, garage entrance, employee entrance, mechanicals).
