The whole area around 57th street on the West side is going through a mini boom that gets barely mentioned.
The most talked about project is the Pyramid, deservingly so but Riverside South has 2 towers completed and 2 or 3 more ready to rise, there's 606 W 57th, the almost completed 525 W 52nd, Alvaro Siza's 611 west 56th and few more projects in the works.

Anyway...

Just look at this Grand Picture of this future Engineering Marvel.

First time I saw this Picture I stared at it for maybe half an hour to be honest. Just so Massively Powerful to see. Specially in the night with all the lights.

Remember that Chrysler Building has been the Worlds tallest building one time in the last Century and now it will be "neighbor" to One Vanderbilt who will be The Big Apples New Signature Tower of this Century as the ESB was in the last Century in this city. But the best part of all this is that Chrysler Building does not even stand out when this giant standing next to it. One Vanderbilt takes all the attention and focus and I love it. Looks like a dwarf compared to this one. All this is called progress in my Eyes. The Capital of the World is evolving in Greatness. They building for and towards the future. Marvellous Exellent Incredible Impressive

Weird, I actually get the opposite impression, that it draws more attention to Chrysler. It's been getting lost in the skyline, and now (well, soon) with a tall reference point next to it people will know exactly where to look - knowingly or unknowingly - to see it instantly. I think it's great to have focus drawn in the direction of this classic again.

Its mark on the skyline is alright, at least One Vanderbilt has some architectural references related to New York, like the tapering top with setbacks and an imposing spire. But it should remain the only dominant new building in the vicinity of the Chrysler Building, or that world famous landmark and unique piece of Art Deco will vanish in an ocean of whatever-towers.

It's a shame 1 Vanderbilt has such a disjointed crown. It's over-designed and leaves a discordant impression. Standing next to Chrysler on the skyline doesn't help either.

It's mixed-use (multi-purpose). Offices, Shops, Dining, Residences, Hotels, Cultural center, public gardens and plaza, interactive sculpture, observation deck
