City Files Plans For $50 Million South Bronx Police Station Designed By Bjarke Ingels

The New York City Department of Design and Construction has filed plans for a Bjarke Ingels-designed police station in the South Bronx that’s expected to cost $50 million.

The three-story building will rise at 567 East 149th Street, on the border between Mott Haven and Melrose, in an area that the Daily News calls “the toughest precinct in the city.” The station house will serve the 40th Precinct, which has the city’s highest murder rate but the fewest detectives assigned to each violent crime, according to the Times.

Somehow it looks like a prison rather than a police station... Bjarke Ingels is only becoming worse it seems.

I agree in the sense that it has some elements of brutalism. Would be interesting to see a brutalist revival movement became a thing.

I agree, I'd love to see more brutalist structures cropping up... as long as they handle their street-level spaces better than most of their midcentury counterparts.

So I actually kind of like this building. But did no one think to ask whether the NYPD should be adopting a style with "brutal" in the name?

As if this brutal world would need even more brutality and brutalism...

Really, architecture needs to be about harmony and beauty to sustain.

Art only needs to be about what the artist wants it to be about.

Limiting architectural styles sounds pretty dystopian to me.

I just mean that certain elements of brutalism (at least when it was a big deal in the 50s-70s) aren't very conducive to an active urban pedestrian environment.

The popular tendency to cantilever out over a setback base or put the volume of the building up on stilts works well on a campus or in a park, for instance. But when you're restricted by the building plane of a sidewalk, you can wind up having the entrances to the building tucked back away in an uninviting recess, breaking the street wall.

Or there's the issue that arises when you leave bare concrete walls at ground level. Bare concrete is the hallmark of the style, great and dramatic when it's up off the ground. But bare walls again deactivate what should be a series of entrances, and only invite graffiti instead of pedestrian activity.

So I guess what I mean is, I'd be happy to resurrect traditional brutalism, if it's mostly restricted campus-style settings. But for the style to succeed in a dense urban setting like NYC, some stylistic/programmatic changes might have to be made to keep the street wall intact and the pedestrian space activated.
