Architecture is the mother of all arts. "Architectura" is latin and literally means "the art of building". But it's the most public art. When a painting or sculpture is ugly and terrifying, you can hide it in some room or archive.
But architecture is visible to each and everyone who passes by, you just can't "escape" it. It's part of the public urban realm. Therefor it needs to be pleasant to the people passing the building.

Of course you can build houses looking like dog's poo, but you have to live with the consequence that people feel really uncomfortable about it. It lowers the quality of life.

Even today most architects learn the very basic, millennia old Vitruvian virtues of architecture:

firmitas - a building must be solid
utilitas - a building must be useful
venustas - a building must be beautiful

Many ignore or misinterpret the beauty/aesthetics part, though.

City Seeks Developer to Build Housing Over Rail Yard in Long Island City
https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/201...on-ave-housing

Quote:
By Jeanmarie Evelly | January 23, 2017

HUNTERS POINT — The city's Economic Development Corporation, along with the MTA, is seeking a third party to develop the 58,000-square-foot parcel at 11-24 Jackson Ave. bordered by 21st Street, Jackson and 49th avenues.

The city owns the air rights to the site, which is currently used by the LIRR for storage. Any development would need to be built over the existing rail yard, similar to the Hudson Yards development in Manhattan which is being built above the West Side Yard.

The RFP calls for a developer to build a mixed-use project that would include housing for a variety of incomes, as well as a community facility, retail and publicly accessible open space.

Proposals for the site are due April 21, according to the RFP.

Dear erbse, you seem to forget one important thing so let me remind you: beauty is entirely subjective, you see some guys prefer a blond woman and some others (including my self as a south European ) prefer brunettes with beautiful cherry brown eyes, architecture is pretty much the same case. What you find pleasant does not necessarily mean that it's an absolute truth, because somewhere, most probably in the south of Europe there's someone who disagrees.

Certainly, our wealth of architectural styles would not exist if common perceptions of beauty were not perpetually challenged. In the arts, conservatism is not only the death of the art, but of culture as a whole.

It never hurts to remind people that structures such as the Eiffel Tower were indeed ugly and terrifying to the people passing it.

Indeed, and Art Deco was considered as way too industrial and extra modern, they actually referred to it as some sort of 'moderna' back in the hey days, the term Art Deco was coined after decades of it's presence, so only braver nations and economies decided to adopt it. We can see the industrial and heavenly geometrical artworks by Tamara de Lempicka who's my favorite artist of all time (for few years now). She was born in Europe but became the leading representative of the Art Deco style across two continents, a favorite artist of many Hollywood stars, referred to as 'the baroness with a brush'. (wiki)

Quoting Vitruvius and "De Architectura"? Nice to see we have some culture here!
