^ Not necessarily. Esp. in modernist times, architects worked all around the world and spread their styles, which often aren't really regionalist, but rather individualist, depending on the architect. That only changed slightly with the upcoming postmodernism in the late 1970s.

That better not be a parking podium for 200 East 59th st. Looks like one. I didn't think those were allowed in midtown. Theyre quite common in chicago, and theyre not pretty.

Nope, not even close. If I posted a random generic modern office building, from any city in the world, there is no way you would know just from the design what country it's from. Unless you already knew the building by name, but from "style" alone you would never get a clear identity. It could be from any city on any continent.

New York does have an identity, but only with the buildings up to the 1940's. Everything from the 50's to present is generic. It's only in the last few years, with towers like The Steinway and Flatbush, that New York is linking itself back to it's 1930's identity.

And I would say Dubai may have a bit of an identity with it's towers, but most people so far mostly ridicule them.

Parking podium or not, that building is dreadful. Morris Lapidus redux.

West Chelsea - 540 West 25th Street

Yet more gallery space coming to the High Line Area!

New Renderings of Vertical Stack of Art Spaces Coming to West Chelsea

Quote:
Now, the long-time home of the renowned Pace Gallery at 540 West 25th Street is being redeveloped into an eight-floor stack of galleries, offices, event spaces, and private viewing rooms. Pace will occupy half of the 80,000-square-foot building and will be developed by Weinberg Properties, who have published a new set of renderings of the under-construction building on their website. Bonetti/Kozerski Studio are the designers...

...Lower floors will be characterized by a rain-screen system with lava stone cladding, featuring a custom pattern in recycled glass powder. The building’s top two floors will be suspended above a terrace/event-exhibition space that will offer sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. Per the developer, "The building fits into the historical Chelsea context but aims to bridge the gap from a traditional art gallery to a more open and accessible model of art display and engagement."

Astoria, Queens - Hallets Point

First Buildings of the 'Hallets Point' Complex Rise

Quote:
The first building of the Durst Organization game-changing Hallets Point development is now rising. Hallets Pont Building 1 will be a 405-unit rental complex where 20% of its units will be allocated to low-income households. Now 3-stories above street level, the building will ultimately top off at 22-floors-thus greatly altering the low-rise Astoria skyline. The building is part of the larger Hallets Point master plan that calls for 2,400 units (483 affordable) throughout eight residential buildings, retail space, a public waterfront esplanade and a site for a potential K-8 school in all.

Soon the watersides of NYC will all have glassy facades... I don't like that. More diversity would be welcome. Stone, brick, colourful facades, where art thou?
