Cassa NY

NEW TOWER

Ten Arquitectos unveils design for luxury hotel condo tower in NY
Ten Arquitectos, led by Enrique Norten, in collaboration with Cetra /Ruddy has unveiled the design for Cassa NY, a new luxury hotel and residential tower in Mid-town Manhattan that will dramatically alter the skyline.

The tower, which is located two blocks north of Bryant Park, will rise 47 stories from a narrow footprint, resulting in a distinctive obelisk form that stands in contrast to the surrounding low rise glass and stone buildings. The building will be clad in white aluminum panels and punctured by a series of windows, forming a rhythmic pattern that becomes the building’s only exterior decoration. The building’s seven-storey base will be clad with a metal mesh scrim with a window wall behind it.

The project will house a boutique hotel with 166 suites from the second to seventh floor and 57 luxury residences on the floors above. The residences range in size from a 584 sq ft studio to a 2,500 sq ft three bedroom penthouse unit priced at $13.2 million. The building will also contain a signature restaurant, lounge, conference facilities, and a business and fitness center. The hotel and residences will share a triple height lobby. The project is scheduled to open in 2010.

That wouldn't be such a bad thing. The tower posted above is dreadful.

22,000 Tons of Steel to Reach Ground Level

March 27, 2009
By DAVID W. DUNLAP

Rendering of the underground mezzanine at the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey awarded a $338.8 million contract on Thursday to DCM Erectors, which will furnish, fabricate and erect the 22,000 tons of steel needed to construct the World Trade Center Transportation Hub from bedrock to street level. This does not include the distinctive birdlike canopy over the main hall.

The effective steel price in the new contract is $9,000 a ton, the authority said, which is several hundred dollars less than the price per ton for the steel used in a recently built underground concourse.

Dollar for dollar, it is the largest steel contract yet to be awarded at the trade center site. DCM won the second largest contract, too; $276.48 million for 45,000 tons of steel for 1 World Trade Center.

DCM has a plant in South Plainfield, N.J., where about 40 percent of the steel for the transportation hub will be fabricated. Anthony R. Coscia, the chairman of the authority, said the latest contract was therefore “great news for our local economy.”

The street-level roof of the transportation hub’s mezzanine is also the base of the memorial plaza. Christopher O. Ward, the executive director of the authority, said, “We’ve moved one step closer to meeting our commitment to open the memorial in time for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.”

The new projects really push the designs of the new buildings into new heights. New York is really a place like no other. Some may use to carry the name of "little New York" but the original can never be duplicated.

That new place on 45th and 6th is already cleared out I guess it was just waiting for approval because they just recently started digging out the foundation and it looks ugly it will help actually fill this in more then stick out since it basically is on 6th ave.

I must say I prefer this building to the pomo(?) tower they will replace it with. But then, if they need more space they should of course build.. I just think it would have been cool to keep the old style instead of replacing it with some design from the 80s.

City Council approves railyards project !!!

Plans to build a $15 billion district of housing, parks and office towers over the West Side rail yards won a key approval from the City Council yesterday, even though construction of the project has been delayed by the economic downturn.

The council, by a 48-0 vote, approved several zoning changes for the eastern half of the site, which officials at The Related Companies said is a sign that the project is moving forward, even though construction is years off.

Related officials say they expect to begin work on rezoning the western half of the 26-acre site later this year.

SIGH............

Good Grief! Stymied in its plans to glut the World Trade Center site with more office space, the Port Authority is now planning to build a luxury hotel overlooking the site, the New York Post reports today.

Yes, you too can soak up the lingering grief emanating from the place once known as Ground Zero, and gawk at the milling tourists from the comfort of your hotel room, which will be equipped with a flat screen television, his and hers bathrobes and a mini-bar with which to drown your sorrows.

Who knew that after the attacks which killed almost 3,000 people, Ground Zero would become a vacation destination.

The Post says the PA believes that the soft market for office space and the financial crisis makes a hotel, combined with high-end apartments, a better choice than offices.

If you see it in person it's pretty amazing. To experience the space between Cassa and the building north of it on 45 st. is hard to explain.

I hope that luxury hotel is built on the site of the former 130 Liberty Street. And that it has 800 rooms and possibly 100 apartments (although apartments were never a part of the original WTC. Just because the original WTC had a hotel doesn't mean the new WTC can't have one.

Prepartions Begin For NYCs 400 Park Avenue !

Groundwork preparations are underway for a new skyscraper which will contribute to the morass that is the New York skyline. Located at a junction on Park Avenue the project is imaginatively named 400 Park Avenue after its address.

It comes from the drawing board of architect Christian De Portzamparc who originally designed it back in 2002 for clients A+R Kalimian Realty. It is one of a collection of towers designed by increasingly busy architect, De Portzamparc soon to begin construction in New York.

When complete the tower will stand at a height of 144 metres, modest by New York standards, extending over the surrounding 1930s buildings and will have a surface area of 40,000 square metres.

Constructed from steel and glazing the sculptural form of the tower is composed of two parts linked via vertical pavilions on each side, rising from ground level, the sheerness of the fully glazed facades is broken up by angular setbacks which feature at varying heights before terminating in several sharp, angled peaks which also vary in height.

The prismatic design of the project not only serves to give the tower a distinctive look on the skyline but also maximises light penetration into the tower and makes the most of the lengthways views down onto the streets below.

The tower will be home to 436 apartments and will no doubt have space for fun things like gyms and spas to avoid boredom, if not the all important shopping space, a must for any self respecting project will occupy the ground floor along with access to the subway.
