Thanks imre.

Well, I like the cladding color. Sometimes, some architects abuse of the blue colored curtain wall.

Architecturally, I think this tower is the biggest mistake in UAE history.

I love almost every other project in Dubai, but the Index is neither futuristic nor orginal--it's simply a supertall remake of the 1969 Chase Tower in Chicago which remains a notorious example of bland architecture.

Chase Tower, Chicago, USA

What do you think that architecture is? It's taking ideas from other buildings and architects and transform them to your own.

Just because you say it bland doesn't make it bland. And it does not appear to be a super-tall 'copy' of the Chase Tower in Chicago.

When this building, then the First National Bank, was being built it was quite cutting edge and looked very sharp indeed. Even today, almost 40 years on, it's not as bland as a box, it isn't all black, it's not featureless, and it doesn't disappear into anonymity.

I personally think The Index, together with Burj Al Arab and Burj Dubai and a few others are the only projects in Dubai that really are architecture!!! The Index stands out in a forest of simple skyscrapers covert in ugly coloured glass, the shape is very strong and has a meaning, it is well positioned instead of just in the grid of all other projects and also constructive it is a really original and challenging design. Unlike most of the other projects in Dubai behind this building is a really good concept.

But this is only my opinion..

I studied architecture and this is really the worst I have ever heard and an insult to all architects out there! I hope you're joking as a student architecture yourself....

Of course I was being ironic. IMO the Index doesn't even look the same as that tower in Chicago. It's much nicer.

I think the Chase tower is a great design, that simple artifice of taking a flat facade and sweeping it out towards the bottom makes a boring desing elegant. There is a similar building in NY of course, one at Fermilab and one in Tokyo. The ICC in HK also develops that idea. I've personally seen both the NY and Tokyo buildings and they are very graceful.

Now, the Index... is its own thing. There's no curved sweep of facade, nor indeed any continuous facade. Continuity is suggested by the concrete framing, but the facade is broken up and yet, at the top, it is the facade that will sweep up beyond the frame, breaking it (if the renders are correct). As such, I think the interplay between the glazed facades and the framing concrete superstructure is extremely clever and will look awesome when it's finished.

The only thing that disapoints me is the setting - it's just by itself right now. I hope in the fullness of time this great building will find a suitable enviroment growing around it. All buildings need a setting IMO, and if different buildings all compete with each other, the result can look like shit (see the ICC again, actually). Dubai City has the benefit of masterplanning, so hopefully that same planning chaos won't marr the city's centerpieces.

No, you're right, his declaration of blandness does not make it bland at all. What makes it bland is the tripe finish of the beige coloured facade, what makes it bland is the uninspiring glass covering the rest of the building. What makes it bland is the boring shape and large concrete expanses. What makes it bland is that it in know way at all achieves the artistic vision of the architect.

Maybe it isn't bland, but it certainly is an eyesore.

Ok. I guess it will remain a difference of opinions with no hope for reconciliation.

Just remember that this is the vision:

Light, delicate, see through..... not monolithic, brutal and solid.

I think we need to trust that the finished building will equal or exceed the renders. It's a little early for any of us to form an opinion since it's still very much under construction.
