In the Cedars its Snow, but in faraya it is simply rain. Lots of rain, flooding should result. Six days straight of rain, that should be snow.

Faraya residents celebrate Wednesday’s snow, after weeks of unseasonably warm weather left the ski-resort town snowless. (NOW Lebanon)

Snow season gets late kick-start
By Lucie Hennequin
Special to The Daily Star
Saturday, January 23, 2010

BEIRUT: After a regrettably dry month of December, the rain and cold have finally arrived for seasonable weather, meaning the country’s ski resorts will spend this weekend kicking off the long-awaited winter season for hotels and local facilities.

At Mzaar resort, next to Faraya, everything is ready to welcome ski enthusiasts. For the staff of Pic Blanc, one of the numerous ski and snowboard equipment rentals, the season has begun.

“The slopes are opening, and we’ve been looking forward to it for one month,” said a manager at Pic Blanc. “We’re ready to work!” Thanks to the lower temperatures and snowfall during the week, the resort opens.

Several consecutive days of true winter weather has made a difference for the region’s hotels. “It’s picked up very well this weekend; we’re fully booked for now,” notes Walid Kanaan, general manager of the InterContinental Mzaar. “If the snow persists, we are looking at solid bookings for the next few weeks.”

Likewise, skileb.com, a website that provides online booking for Lebanon’s main ski resorts, is optimistic.

“The reservations are coming in, and January will be a busy month,” said Ronald Sayegh, the founder of the website.

At the ski clubs, the training can finally start, after an annoying delay.

“Our skiers have missed one month of practicing. They will have to make up the delay,” said Youssef Khalil, the head of the Al-Chabab ski club in Faraya. Visitors to the Cedars in Bsharri have also begun to pour in.

“Last week, we had many cancellations. But this weekend will be better,” said Joseph Nakad, manager of Le Cedrus Hotel.

Even if some resorts like Faqra in Kesrouan may wait until next weekend to open, the locals are gearing up to meet the expected influx. Fadi, the assistant manager at L’Auberge de Faqra, is delighted: “We already have twice as many reservations as last week, even though the slope isn’t opened yet.”

There’s one thing all actors of the ski season are keeping a close watch on: the weather. Saturday’s forecast is cloudy in the morning and rainy in the afternoon, meaning that the morning might be the only opportunity for weekend skiing and snow sports enthusiasts.

Sunday is expected to see rainy weather from the morning, while the afternoon will bring thunderstorms and a drop in temperature. Snow is expected to fall as low as 1,300 meters by Sunday night.

“We hope that as it started late, the season will be longer. If the snow stays late into March of the beginning of April, it could still mean good business for us,” said Kanaan.

Even a little snow is enough to attract the Lebanese.

“I’ve been waiting for so long to go skiing, that even if the snow isn’t perfect, I’m going up there!” says Johnny, a 26-year-old student. “Only rain would discourage me.”

In holland we had a crazy amount of snow from 16 december untill around the 16th of january and all rivers were frozen. Frozen rivers aren't very special in the winter over here and also every winter we mostly have some snow, but mostly only for three days, on day one it snows then and after three days it's gone and mostly not more than 10 cm. But this year we got multiple days when it was snowing and the amount of snow that had fallen (especially the weekend before christmas) wasn't normal at all. Here it was around 30 cm, more than I have ever seen in my life, and in the north it was even around a meter and sometimes snow dunes. Everywhere in Europe but also in asia (korea/china) and the USA (florida) it was colder and snowing more than normally. Sadly enough Lebanon didn't get their part of it. Now at the moment it's again above 0 C at day and just a few degrees below 0 C in the night. And rain instead of snow.

This is how it looked like in december (near rotterdam in the west, below sealevel)

with 30 cm at base,it's not going to hold for more than two days especially that Temp. will rise starting tomorrow morning.needless to say it's actually dangerous as the base is not packed enough.plus this is actually Lebanon as it's part of our Shebaa farms
