I really like most of the buildings in Dubai. I like that the lowrises have a traditional look, while the highrises are all unique with many decorative features. I hate plain glass boxes like they build here. The people that criticize are just intolerant conservatives. Like all conservatives, in all domains, they like one thing, and anything that deviates from that "one thing" is ugly, kitch, or without style.

But I do have one major criticism. I dislike all the "dirt lots" between the buildings. I realize that many are awaiting their own construction, but there are too many areas that are unkempt. Since it is the desert, putting in green lawns would be absurd. They should instead do what they do in Arizona. Stone landscaping, Japanese rock garden style, intermixed with whatever local vegetation that can be maintained in that environment. Dubai could be a very beautiful city if they did this. Phoenix Arizona looks pretty good, in this perspective.

It's not uncommon to have such crane for buildings with 10< floors.

They do use that form of landscaping, but you can't just do that to every empty plot of land. It is a desert, and the empty plot would look like one.

Having said that, those empty plots are mostly seen from up above, they are less noticable on street levels

True that. Most of Dubai's supertall along Sheikh Zayed road look amazing. But the midrise buildings between the supertalls looks ugly (most of them have blue and white stripes). Those who say most of Dubai's supertalls looks ugly are trolls.
However the quality of supertalls at the tallest block in Dubai Marina are not upto the mark. Most of them look almost same with different colourings. Sheikh Zayed road would look 100x better once all the empty plots are filled with more supertalls. I heard Dubai economy has recovered, we can hope for the best again

The buildings on SZR arenīt really beautiful and some are really tacky and shit. But the skyline is truely breathtaking from a distance.
