Towers this tall, wherever they were built, used to have high standards of design 99% of the time because they were so out of the ordinary and expensive. In Dubai and China recently it's like they have become so common that in a few cases the standard of design is no better than for an ordinary 20 storey apartment tower.
Could not agree more. Most of these new residential towers being built in Dubai reek of vanity with their tacky, shiny gold windows and overbearing swirly decorations to name but a few features of their horrendous facades. I'm sure they can afford to hire real architects, so why don't they?

Sheikh Zayed road is one of the ugliest urban planning disasters I've ever seen. Hopefully the rest of Dubai won't share the same fate.

I'm with connected on this one. I like their attempts to make something new and fancy, and they do have some really nice buildings. But far too many are too flashy.

I am not saying that this particular building is wonderfull, but since when being flashy is a bad thing?

... unless you are one of those types that think: Everyone wearing designers clothes/shoes instead of baggy ones or take care of their hairs instead of just wearing a baseball cap, is gay ... and if you prefer a drink/coctail instead of beer you're a p****?

I think many people can agree the building we see on the left side of the picture is pretty tacky. Nevertheless, except that particular one, most of the other buildings are very OK.

Haha yes, very tacky, I was thinking the same.

However, it's not such a bad thing...gives the area a touch of character.

This is to whoever said all supertalls before were 99% great:

Not saying there aren't bad designs but doesn't mean there haven't been bad designs in the past. The WTC was IMO butt ugly and I know many people think otherwise but just because they were destroyed doesn't make them any less ugly, people hated them.

I do get where you're coming from though. 300m buildings are becoming way more common and their ultra-landmark status isn't what it used to be before.

AHMED ABDUL RAHIM AL ATTAR TOWER, another tower with someone's name. However, I do think "Trump Tower" rolls off the tongue a little better.
