BD complex is definitely not 100 Bn Dhs flo. Even the huge EMAAR project in Saudi Arabia is not 100 Bn Dhs. This by far is the biggest project in the middle east currently.

my favourite project so far, unsurpassed density but lacking a bit in size, Abu Dhabi's projects are more elegant than Dubai's IMO

emirates palace looks amazing on the outside, probably the best themed exterior ive seen but on the inside, is a tad too kitschy for my taste. Abu Dhabi has a lot of great new projects which are collectively as big as dubai's TOWER projects now, just give it some and it'll catch up with Dubai but only in highrise projects.

Wow.. this is what I call fast

Enabling works begin on Saadiyat Island

Enabling works have begun to clear the ground for infrastructure development of Saadiyat Island - the 27 square kilometre natural island lying just 500 metres offshore Abu Dhabi city.

Enabling works start on Saadiyat Island.

Saadiyat Island is the flagship project of the newly-formed Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), which is charged with overseeing the transformation of this unique natural asset into a strategic international tourism destination.

The AED 128.45 million (USD 35 million) enabling works contract is being carried out by the Abu Dhabi-headquartered Al Jaber Group, which runs one of the UAE's largest contracting companies.

The contract, which is expected to take nine months to complete, covers clearance of the site, demolition of existing structures, re-routing of services, erection of fencing, construction of temporary construction roads around the island, of office building and security gates.

Saadiyat Island, which translates from Arabic into Island of Happiness, will be developed in three phases from 2006-2018.

'The commencement of enabling works is a visible demonstration of our commitment to ensure the timely transformation of this unique natural asset,' said Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and Managing Director of TDIC.

'We anticipate making more construction announcements later this month and also intend to release a major tender for the dredging and bulk earth filling works.'

An article in GulfConstruction May, similar to above, but there are a few extra details that make it worth posting:

Abu Dhabi unveils plans for Saadiyat

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) has unveiled a new public joint stock company charged with developing the emirate’s real estate assets and its flagship Saadiyat Island project.

The new company – The Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) – will transform the 27 sq km natural island, just 500 m off shore from the UAE capital, into a strategic international tourism destination.
Saadiyat Island will be developed in three phases from 2006-2018. Half the size of the tropical island of Bermuda, Saadiyat will be the Middle East’s largest single natural island development.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi says Saadiyat’s transformation is a key proposition in the Abu Dhabi government’s strategy of increasing tourism to the emirate from its current level of almost one million to three million by 2015 – a projected growth rate of 11.3 per cent a year.”
Master-planned to differentiate it as a centre of sophisticated elegance in one of the world’s most rapidly developing regions, Saadiyat, the island off an island, will eventually be home to 150,000 residents – a population around the size of Oxford in the UK or Hollywood in the US.
Major development parcels are being offered to Gulf investors on a freehold basis, with non-Gulf investors being offered 99-year leases or 50-year renewable leases.
There will be a variety of freehold homes provided by developers.
Saadiyat will have six distinct districts delivering a multitude of experiences with complementary environments and all connected by a palm-lined arterial freeway. The island will have 19 km of white, sandy beach, two golf courses, 29 hotels with over 7,000 rooms, including an iconic seven-star property, three marinas with berthing for 1,000 vessels, more than 8,000 private villas, resorts set on spectacular beaches, over 38,000 apartments and eight iconic “string of pearl” architectural landmarks housing museums, a concert hall, art gallery and major cultural offerings.
Saadiyat will be linked to Abu Dhabi city via two iconic causeways, each with 10-lane freeways.

Abu Dhabi pictures an island-style Guggenheim

The world-famous Guggenheim’s next art gallery is on course to be on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island with high-level talks taking place to make it happen.

The Guggenheim is a byword for cutting-edge design, with its Bilbao gallery in Spain among the most instantly recognisable buildings in the world.

It currently has museums in New York, Bilbao, Berlin, Venice and Las Vegas – and Saadiyat Island could be next on the list if negotiations go well.

A Guggenheim executive visited the UAE capital recently to discuss building the foundation’s latest gallery on Saadiyat Island, a source close to the deal who requested anonymity told Emirates Today.

He said: “A prominent member of the Guggenheim board has been spending time in Abu Dhabi discussing the planned museum. It’s definitely happening.” Saadiyat Island – which translates as Island of Happiness in English – is 27 sq km of land located 500m offshore from the UAE capital. It is half the size of Bermuda and will be the Middle East’s largest single natural island development.

Abu Dhabi’s plans for Saadiyat include “black pearls” – circular structures built out into the sea that will house sophisticated cultural institutions, such as the Guggenheim, in what will be known as the Culture District.

The Guggenheim plan is part of Abu Dhabi’s bid to increase tourism to the emirate from its current level of a million a year to three million by 2015 – a growth rate of 11 per cent a year.

The Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC), the company managing the massive development, was tight-lipped on the Guggenheim project – but did not deny it.

A spokeswoman said: “TDIC is committed to bringing worldclass facilities to the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island.

“The company is in consultation with a number of international suppliers of cultural activities, but it is far too early to comment on any specific plans for the district.” The UAE’s profile as an arts centre was boosted recently by big events, such as the Christie’s auction of Middle Eastern contemporary art in Dubai.

The Guggenheim Foundation in New York refused to confirm whether talks had taken place but did say that a full “feasibility study” had not been done.

Very similar to earlier posts, but it's in this month's GulfConstruction, so I might as well post it.

Enabling works begin on Saadiyat Island

Abu Dhabi

The Al Jaber Group is now clearing the ground for infrastructure development of Saadiyat Island, the 27 sq km natural island lying just 500 m offshore Abu Dhabi city.

Saadiyat Island (Island of Happiness in Arabic) is the flagship project of the newly formed Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) charged with overseeing the transformation of this unique natural asset into a strategic international tourism destination.
The Dh128.45 million ($35 million) enabling works contract, which is expected to take nine months to complete, includes site clearance, demolition of existing structures, re-routing of services, fencing erection, and the construction of temporary roads, offices and security gates.
“The commencement of enabling works is a visible demonstration of our commitment to ensure the timely transformation of this unique natural asset,” says TDIC director general Mubarak Al Muhairi. “We anticipate making more construction announcements (shortly) and also intend to release a major tender for the dredging and bulk earth filling works.”
Saadiyat Island is considered to be the largest single mixed-use development in the Gulf. The natural island is half the size of Bermuda and represents one of the most important development opportunities in Abu Dhabi’s history. The island, which has 30 km of water frontage and boasts many natural eco-features, including mangrove forests, is being developed as a strategic international tourism destination and marks a new era in the rapid evolution of Abu Dhabi.
Saadiyat Island will be developed in three phases with total completion scheduled for 2018. The master plan envisages six highly individual districts and features 29 hotels, including an iconic seven-star property, three marinas with combined berths for around 1,000 boats, museums and cultural centres, two golf courses, civic and leisure facilities, sea-view apartments and elite villas.
Saadiyat Island is expected to be home to a community of more than 150,000. It will be linked to the main Abu Dhabi island and the Abu Dhabi mainland via two, 10-lane freeways making the destination easily accessible to Abu Dhabi International Airport.
