Construction Village first cluster to open in April

The project will be one of the most advanced housing facilities for construction workers in the Middle East. (SUPPLIED)

on Sunday, February 15, 2009

The first accommodation cluster in phase one of Saadiyat Construction Village will finish construction and open in April, according to Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC).

"It will house 5,000 construction workers in facilities that match or exceed international standards for personal space, public utilities and leisure and recreation facilities," said Lee Tabler, CEO of TDIC. "By July, three additional clusters of phase one will be opened, accommodating an additional 15,000 workers and we have the potential to add clusters in the future to accommodate a total of 40,000 workers when required."

Investment in Saadiyat Construction Village's first phase will total Dh950 million. When ready, the project will be one of the most advanced housing facilities for construction workers in the Middle East by Abu Dhabi's tourism asset developer.

Situated on Saadiyat Island, the 27 sq km leisure, residential and cultural destination island adjacent to Abu Dhabi, TDIC's Saadiyat Construction Village will set a new benchmark in the region for the standard of accommodation and facilities provided for construction workers, said the developer.

"The construction village is situated on the beach to the south of the island and has extensive landscaped areas with parks, tennis courts, basketball courts and a cricket pitch," said Tabler. "One of the core rationales behind the decision for the village is to foster a sense of home and community for the workers on the island." It includes halls of residence, dining areas catering to a multitude of ethnic tastes, shops, internet booths, recreational parks and laundry facilities.

Saadiyat Construction Village was master-planned by Singapore's award-winning Surbana Corporation, which has 45 years of township planning and development experience, and has taken 12 months planning and construction. The village buildings are designed with significant environmental considerations, including the installation of an energy efficient cooling system.

"By committing to building this village, TDIC is fulfilling its pledge to deliver best practice across every element of its operations," said Tabler. "In matching and in some areas exceeding international living standards for workers accommodation, the company is also delivering on the promise of respect which is at the core of the Abu Dhabi brand."

Mortgage deals secured for Saadiyat Island project

ISLAND HOMES: The TDIC has linked with banks and financial institutions to offer mortgage deals of up to 85 percent finance for homes on Saadiyat Island, pictured.

by Andy Sambidge on Thursday, 02 April 2009

The Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has announced it has secured a number of mortgage financing deals with some of the UAE's largest banks for real estate on Saadiyat Island.

Abu Dhabi Finance, Standard Chartered Bank, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, National Bank of Abu Dhabi and Mashreq Bank can now offer special mortgage products, including finance up to 85 percent, on homes on the natural island just off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

The offerings are more generous than those being offered by most banks which have slashed their level of loans due to the global financial crisis.

Lee Tabler, TDIC's CEO said: "The financing agreements secured with these institutions represent an important step in our plans to turn Saadiyat Island into a destination of world renown.

"They not only provide potential home owners with an extremely attractive opportunity to own property on one of the UAE's prime locations but also demonstrate that, despite the current financial climate, Abu Dhabi is still a viable and attractive investment opportunity."

The first phase of Saadiyat will open officially to the public in the fourth quarter of 2009.

It will mark the opening of the 10-lane Saadiyat Bridge, the emerging landmark which will link Abu Dhabi city with Saadiyat Island.

Saadiyat's residential offerings are on track, project bosses said.

They said construction was advancing on the luxurious villas, which are the cornerstone of the first phase of the exclusive Saadiyat Beach Residences community.

A range of three to eight-bedroom villas, some featuring a private gym, elevator, swimming pool and movie theatre, are on schedule for handover in the second quarter of 2011.

It´s a bit funny that the two main powerblocks within the Al-Nahyan family got one island each to play with..
The Bani Fatima Al-Nahyans got Al-Reem and the second generation of the Bani Mohammad bin Khalifa Al-Nahyans got Saadiyat apparently.

I´m sometimes utterly convinced that the Emir of Abu Dhabi do see himself as the pivotal balancing force between the fractions and regard it as his main function..

That would be Sheikh Falah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. Not a mover and shaker in Abu Dhabi but of course very rich.

The Bani Fatima are the sons of the late Emir Sheikh Zayed with his wife Fatima bint Mubarak Al-Ketabi.

The Bani Mohammad bin Khalifa was the late Emirs relatives and the ones that supported him during in the early years of power..now they are regarded as the "old guard" but their sons are influential.

The latter are Sheikh Zayed's brothers' children if I am not wrong....the current ruling family members' cousins.

Well, close but no cigar..They share the same great-grandfather though, I think.

Zayed and his brothers was Bani Sultan while these guys where Bani Khalifa.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa was the leader of the Bani Khalifa branch of the Al-Nahyan family and his sons (the Bani Mohammed bin Khalifa) was Hamdan, Mubarak, Saif, Surour and Tahnoun.

Sheikh Tahnoun is still the governor of Al-Ain btw.

Construction of historic Louvre Abu Dhabi museum starts

By Eman Mohammed, Abu Dhabi Deputy Editor
Published: May 26, 2009, 14:51

Abu Dhabi: Construction works at Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first universal museum to be built in the Middle East, has started officially in the UAE on Tuesday.

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, welcomed French President Nicolas Sarkozy to a commemorative ceremony to mark the start of the construction work.

In a presentation before dignitaries at Emirates Palace, Shaikh Mohammad and Sarkozy accepted a time capsule for the museum from children from UAE and France which will be placed in the Louvre Abu Dhabi at a future date.

Shaikh Mohammad and Sarkozy also inaugurated a new preview experience of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, being presented through July 2 in Gallery One of Emirates Palace.

Titled Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi, the preview features a brief film about the design for the Louvre Abu Dhabi by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, an illustrated talk, and a guided tour of selected artworks specially chosen to demonstrate the curatorial vision of the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

"Abu Dhabi's ultimate goal in creating the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and indeed the entire Saadiyat Island Cultural District, is to build a platform for deeper and more meaningful exchange among people from our own region and from all parts of the globe," stated President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

"With deep admiration for the people of Abu Dhabi, and for their leaders who believe, as we do, that the arts lie at the very heart of civilisation, the Republic of France joins in celebrating this auspicious day," said Sarkozy. "Together, we have embarked on an extraordinary journey of cultural exchange and collaboration and I believe that our two countries will forever be strengthened by this partnership."

Sarkozy said the UAE is a dynamic country which values stability and is proud of its national identity that is open to other cultures.

He also noted that during one generation, the UAE has become a balanced and globalisation centre, open to the dialogue of cultures.

Sarkozy touched upon the dynamic partnership between the UAE and France, and that it deserves to be called a unique strategic partnership in its size, as its vision and targets surpass the bilateral agreement.

Sarkozy also pointed out in his speech a new aspect of cooperation between the two countries in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
