Sotheby's is set to auction off one of the earliest known photographs of new york city. It is believed to have been taken in 1848 and is believed to be a photo of an estate somewhere in Manhattan's upper west side

Sweet. In about 50 years + or - the Robber Barons would have led the growing, ever migrating wealth of New York City up that would be intergrated into the grid and look somewhat like it does today.

Was the elevated rail that can be seen on the left side of the picture a commuter line, or a part of the subway system? Why is the line not operated anymore?

Actually, I believe that that might be the West Side Highway before it was torn down.
