Podcasts?

Apparently podcasts aren't that popular and I must admit I never felt the need to check one. I would care for one with noises from construction locations, say in boomtowns like Dubai, though. Does anyone know if such a type of podcast exists?

don't know, the most popular types of podcasts are tech (reviews of hardware/software, events etc), movie and tv review and "entertainment" ones (like talk show ones, verbal versions of a persons blog where they prattle on about anything), comedy club ones, music ones (where you can get tracks of real indie bands, not this shite they're passing off as indie atm)...

podcast ally would be a good place to start for searching, grab a copy of a podcast aggregator (something like juice (or ipodder as it used to be known) at http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php) and away you go.

Thank you. I guess I had better run this on the international skybar and perhaps it might inspire people not to take just photos but also do 'urban field recordings'. I bought a microphone but it's rather tranquile here. Just chirping birdies and the odd car.

I wrote podcasts but it's sound reports which I'm after. Like with huge projects in the west, where the NL is muddy and built on 'weak' soil, there is this continuous drilling which is like slow dance music

In say, London you get a layer of street noise (shops, music etc) on top. Does SSC have members who record sound? It always strikes me when I have people from London, Paris or Brussels on the phone. Departure announcements in railway stations (Victoria has fabulous acoustics!), consumer noises in warehouses, it's all very intrigueing when you're sat at home looking at squirrels hopping trees in your garden.

What an odd requirement bikkel. Can't you just imagine the sound? I know what you mean though, when I speak on the 'phone to anyone in central Liverpool, and hear the building work and seagulls in the background, it's very exciting.

I recently bought a mp3 player for the first time, because I wanted to hear podcasts. They are no good for music because they compress the sound too much, which is no good for music lovers. Radio 4 claim to do podcasts, but of course it doesn't work, I can't get anything onto it, it either wont' download them or load them or something or other. Yet another total waste of money. I am going to stop buying new technology, I can't be arsed with it. My mp3 player looks nice though, even though I can't use it, it's a little LOGIK one, all brushed aluminium and square looking. It feels nice as well, kind of tactile. A super little thing.

I owe you. Thanks for the inside information! I am a little odd indeed yet with our fascination with mobile phone pictures and such, nobody seems to be bothered with recording the sounds! I check the odd weblog, sadly though many are just personal ramlbings that don't interest me.

A mix of hammering machines and seagulls is a wonderful prospect. We should have sound files on this forum! From my city those would be boring but seaports like Liverpool and Dubai could offer great entertainment.

I did toy with the idea of doing something like this a few months ago.
I was going to wonder round London recording sounds and have maybe 1-2 10 minute podcasts a week from famous areas, or construction sites.

But when I did some tests my mic wasn't really up to it and i'd only get sounds that were about 10ft away from me.

Oh well.

It's handy software! Tried and tested on home recordings with hammering piano play from a cheap microphone.

a good device to use would be an iriver - you can plug a mic directly into it and make recordings, it's what a lot of people who make podcasts whilst out on the road use.

I don't know if it'll work with win98 or not because I haven't used win98 since about 99 - and realistically you should move with the times win98 isn't supported anymore and that appaling os has rightfully been put out to pasture!
