The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today approved a long-delayed plan to rebuild the World Trade Center site that was destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks.

The authority's board voted unanimously in open session, sealing a deal that developer Larry Silverstein announced he had agreed to on Tuesday.

The vote cleared the way for building the Freedom Tower and other high rises where the Twin Towers once stood. Construction could begin within a few days of board approval, officials have said.

I don't mean to be a downer for saying this, but that article doesn't imply that the FT is officially u/c. It did not even state when there intends to be a groundbreaking. The PA still has yet to find a developer and that could be a tough one. Also, its final approval has yet to be given, so it could still be too early to be celebrating. Let's not forget that there was a similar article nearly two years ago in the NY Times and it happened to be a false start. I have feeling that this one could end up as one as well.

WTF? Silverstein will build the tower then give it to the PANY&NJ. He's still the developer, the only difference is that he gives up the FT when construction is over, passing off the risk of being stuck with an empty tower.

It's state owned property, they don't have to seek approval from the city.

What a letdown. sigh. Maybe if they built two it would be a bit more palatable.

Silverstein said that the construction trucks will start rolling in tomorrow, according to the most recent information I have read.

No, but there has been a number of minor aesthetic design changes with the base and the top.

Silverstein could be one of the worst criminals on the face of this planet.

Needs to be 2 of them and it would of been better if the roof hight was 1776ft and the spire went to 2001ft the year they fell and to beat Fordman spire which will be 2000ft.

For you guys that say this design sucks i think its a much improvment over the older versions which went to 800ft and had a fake glass building on top.

I've tried really hard to like this building, but I just can't. NY deserves better.

A complete design of the Freedom Tower (base, spire) was never finalized! And while I am at it, for those complaining about the other buildings on the site-guess what-those are just fill-ins for the real towers, which have not been designed yet!

I like the design but I understand why alot of people are displease. I think its due to the fact that the WTC were such an iconic image that it will need another "WOW" Tower to impress the people who dislike it. I hope it gets built, if not then change the design and make it better.

People need to realize that that's not what it will look like. I doubt that we will know until it is completed.
