Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airport Become Biggest for Cargo on China Trade

By Neil Denslow - Jan 27, 2011 12:55 PM GMT+0800

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. became the world’s biggest international air-cargo carrier last year and its Hong Kong home was the busiest freight airport because of surging exports from China’s Pearl River Delta.

The airline’s cargo traffic, or weight multiplied by distance moved, rose 23 percent to 10.2 million ton-kilometers last year. Korean Air Lines Co., previously the biggest, had 9.7 million ton-kilometers in total, based on quarterly figures. The Seoul-based carrier released fourth-quarter results today.

Cathay and Hong Kong airport’s preeminence underscores China’s central role in world trade, which also enabled Shanghai to become the world’s busiest container port last year. China boosted exports of electronics, clothes and other goods 31 percent last year, while the rising number of millionaires is also spurring inbound shipments of luxury goods and fresh foods.

Hong Kong airport’s cargo volumes rose 23 percent last year to 4.1 million tons, according to the airport operator. Memphis International Airport, home to FedEx. Corp.’s main hub, had a 5.9 percent jump to 3.9 million tons, based on figures posted on its website. The Tennessee facility was the world’s busiest cargo airport since at least 1992. Third-ranked Shanghai Pudong Airport handled 3.2 million tons, according to the city’s airport authority.

The growth of production in the Pearl River Delta, which neighbors Hong Kong, has lured investment from international air-cargo carriers, including FedEx and United Parcel Service Inc., which have both opened hubs in the region. FedEx is the world’s largest air-cargo carrier, including both international and domestic shipments.

Cathay Fleet

Cathay expects to boost cargo capacity about 8 percent this year. The airline’s expansion plans have been curtailed by delays in receiving new 747-8 freighters from Boeing Co. The carrier is also forming a cargo venture with affiliate Air China Ltd. to access hubs in Shanghai and Beijing, while also building its own freight terminal at Hong Kong airport.

Shanghai’s port last year surpassed Singapore in container volumes, with traffic jumping 16 percent to 29.1 million 20-foot equivalent units, the city government said. That was about 500,000 boxes more than Singapore, it said.

China’s economy expanded 10.3 percent in 2010, the fastest in three years, according to the statistics bureau. The nation, home to 1.3 billion people, probably surpassed Japan as the world’s second-largest economy last year, Japanese Economy Minister Kaoru Yosano said this month.

In nominal terms, China’s gross domestic product is more than 100 times bigger than in 1978, when Communist Party leader Deng Xiaoping began rolling out free-market policies. While China outstripped Germany in 2007 and the U.K. and France in 2005, the economy remains less than half as big as that of the U.S.

Cathay Pacific update on Bali flight disruptions
28 January 2011
Press Release

Cathay Pacific Airways advises that disruptions to the airline’s services to and from Denpasar in Bali are continuing today.

Since yesterday (27 January), flights to and from the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali have been affected by an ash cloud from the Tengger Caldera volcano in Java, Indonesia.

As a result of the impact of volcanic ash, no Cathay Pacific services between Hong Kong and Denpasar were able to operate yesterday or today. Plans are being made to operate flights tomorrow (29 January), but the situation is still dependent on the ash cloud situation based on forecasts that will be provided in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Passengers are advised to check the latest flight information at the airline’s website, www.cathaypacific.com, and to input their contact details in the Manage My Booking function at the website to ensure they get the latest flight information via SMS or email.

A Cathay Pacific spokesperson said: “Passengers can be assured that there is no greater priority than safety at Cathay Pacific, and we took the decision to delay flights to and from Bali in response to the latest volcanic ash forecasts. We will do everything we can to resume our Bali operations at the earliest possible opportunity. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused and we would like to thank our passengers for their patience.”

Due to the flight disruptions, Cathay Pacific has announced that, with immediate effect, all rebooking and rerouting charges will be waived for tickets issued worldwide on or before 28 January for travel on Cathay Pacific involving Denpasar between 28 January and 31 January 2011. The waiver is for all confirmed bookings irrespective of fare type. However, there will be no waiver for cancellation and refund charges.

Cathay Pacific will continue to monitor the situation in Denpasar and will issue further updates should there be any changes to the flight schedule.

No. I try to avoid double-posting the same content in the same section. Don't want the mods to think I'm trying to manipulate my post count.

And in case people start a discussion, you should also be prepared to answer questions on why bird strikes are relevant, what measures should be in place to prevent, and pilot training in handling these situations. People posting content should familiarize themselves with the topic on hand so not to create a perception they are blindly posting.

Win unlimited travel on Cathay Pacific

HONG KONG —Cathay Pacific has launched a competition through its official Facebook page that offers one lucky winner the chance to travel the world on the Cathay Pacific network.

All it takes to get started in the “Travel the World in 80 Days with Cathay Pacific” competition is to click “Like” on the airline’s fan page on Facebook. Those who wish to enter should then submit a short video, photo or story through the Facebook page explaining how they would spend 80 days traveling around the world.

Entries can be submitted until March 6 and all the materials submitted will be displayed on the Facebook page. The competition is open to people aged 18 (Japan residents must be 20+) and over who are resident in one of the following countries/territories: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Terms and conditions apply.

After viewing all the entries, the airline will shortlist a total of eight entrants and invite them to Hong Kong - covering their airfares and accommodation - for a final panel interview and a one-day challenge from April 12 to 14. The challenge will involve the finalists touring Hong Kong for a day and using their initiative and creativity to post Twitter “tweets” and upload photos that capture the essence of the city’s attractions.

The overall winner will receive unlimited round-trip Economy Class tickets from Hong Kong to any destination of their choice on the networks of Cathay Pacific and sister airline Dragonair for 80 days between June 1 and Aug 31. Also included is three nights’ hotel accommodation in each destination, a daily allowance of up to HK$2,800 per trip and global travel insurance.

In return, the winner will be asked to submit a daily report on his or her travel experiences, including photos and videos, for posting on the Cathay Pacific Facebook fan page.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Marketing & Product James Ginns said, “We are very excited about launching this unique competition, which will generate interest around the world and help to highlight the connectivity provided by Cathay Pacific’s international network. Social network sites are an increasingly important tool through which we can engage with our customers and we are pleased to run the ‘Travel the World in 80 Days’ competition through Facebook, incorporating other social media channels such as Twitter.”

Newspaper distributor Dawson says in offer talks

Jan 31 (Reuters) - Newspaper and magazine distributor Dawson Holdings said it was in preliminary discussions for a possible sale of itself, sending the company's shares up by a third.

The company, which provides in-flight newspapers and magazines to airlines like Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Delta and Emirates, said the discussions were at an early stage and there can be no certainty that an offer will be made.

Dawson Holdings, with a market value of about $3.8 million pounds, is being advised by KPMG Corporate Finance.

In December, the company had posted a 39 percent fall in its full-year pretax profit, hurt mainly by weak performance from its airline service unit.

Dawson shares touched a four-month high of 6.97 pence at 1304 GMT on Monday on the London Stock Exchange.

Cathay Pacific’s Cairns flights affected by approaching cyclone, snow hits other services
1 February 2011
Press Release

Cathay Pacific Airways advises that a number of its services today are being affected by adverse weather conditions and that passengers should check the airline’s website, www.cathaypacific.com, to get the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

In Cairns, heavy winds are expected from 22.00 tonight (local time) through most of tomorrow due to the approach of Cyclone Yasi. As a result, Cathay Pacific has confirmed that tonight’s CX103 Hong Kong-Brisbane-Cairns service will now terminate in Brisbane, and that the Cairns-Brisbane leg of the CX102 service tomorrow (2 February) will not operate.

Meanwhile, three of the airline’s flights from Hong Kong to Sapporo today had to be diverted to Tokyo due to heavy snow at Chitose International Airport in Hokkaido. One runway has been cleared now and the three flights, CX580, CX2580 and CX2582, will depart from Tokyo to Chitose soon. There will be a subsequent delay in today’s flights returning from Sapporo to Hong Kong.

Earlier today the airline cancelled two flights – CX830 from Hong Kong to New York and the CX831 service from New York to Hong Kong – in anticipation of heavy snow and freezing conditions in the US city. However, this afternoon’s CX840 Hong Kong to New York service will operate at 18.25, a delay of one hour, and the 1 February CX889 service from New York will also operate as scheduled.

In addition to checking flight details at the Cathay Pacific website, customers are also advised to input their contact details in the Manage My Booking function at the website to ensure they get the latest flight information via SMS or email.

The airline will continue to monitor the situation for destinations affected by the weather and will issue further updates should there be any changes to the flight schedules.
