The different configurations of the 777 are denoted separately on CX's website. There are 777's running the revamped Y, which features slim (thin) seats.

The China Post news staff
Taiwan tourist accuses Hong Kong airline of discrimination

The China Post news staff--A Taiwanese tourist accused Hong Kong Dragon Airlines of discrimination for letting Hong Kong passengers switch flights while denying her the same arrangement after her flight was grounded by tire problems on Oct. 20.

According to the woman surnamed Huang from New Taipei, who was to board the Dragon Air flight scheduled to depart at 8:55 p.m. on her return from a Hong Kong trip, waited with other passengers at the boarding counter until 9:15 p.m. when the airline announced twice that their flight was delayed due to a tire fracture. Then several passengers from Hong Kong protested to the airlines on flight safety reasons and were allowed to switch to a Cathay Pacific flight.

The airline, however, rejected her demand to switch planes for similar reasons, she said, describing the carrier's action as discriminatory. She and other stranded passengers boarded the plant at about 11 p.m., over two hours late.

The carrier only compensated the unlucky passengers with a HK$75 (about NT$300) Starbucks coupon per person, which most found useless as the coffee shop in the airport did not have enough food prepared for the unexpected customers, she said.

The airline's explanation that the Hong Kong passengers did not have checked baggage (and were therefore more eligible for transfer) was a lie because she heard the passengers talking about their checked stuffs, she said. The carrier staff conversed with the Hong Kong passengers in Cantonese deliberately to keep Taiwanese passengers in the cold, said Huang, who understood Cantonese.

”It is simply discrimination against Taiwanese people,” Huang said.

In response, the Dragon Airlines said that it had not discriminated against any passenger and the decision was made according to regulations. The carrier said it will continue its current practice of allowing passengers with no checked baggage to switch planes in the future.

Press Release

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that it has added the Brazilian cities of Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro to its network following an expanded code-share agreement with oneworld alliance partner American Airlines. The latest destinations will further boost the Hong Kong carrier’s presence in Latin America following the introduction of code-share flights to Mexico, Chile and Peru.

The two new services will offer Cathay Pacific passengers greater convenience and more choice when travelling to Brazil through the airline’s US gateway at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York. Under the expanded agreement, Cathay Pacific’s “CX” code will be placed on American Airlines’ daily services between New York and Sao Paolo and New York and Rio de Janeiro. Tickets for the new code-share services are now open for sale for travel commencing 5 December 2011.

Cathay Pacific Director Sales & Marketing Rupert Hogg welcomed the additional code-share services with American Airlines, saying: “Brazil is now one of the biggest markets in Latin America and an increasingly important centre for business, manufacturing, tourism and trade. This new code-share will boost Cathay Pacific’s presence in Latin America and we look forward to carrying more tourists and business people from Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific region to Brazil.”

Hmm.......interesting that Newark (in New Jersey) is starting to become a popular destination in America (apart from the usual San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Florida, Chicago, New York, etc.)

Cathay plane evacuated in Shanghai after smoke alert
December 9, 2011

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Some 370 passengers and crew were evacuated from a Cathay Pacific flight waiting to take off from Shanghai on Friday after smoke was detected in the cabin, the airline said.

A few suffered minor injuries as they escaped the Boeing 747 jumbo jet, bound for Hong Kong, by emergency chutes, the Hong Kong-based airline said.

Cathay said it was investigating the incident at Shanghai's Pudong international airport.

Cathay Pacific currently ranks as the world's second most profitable airline as measured by net profit and is regularly voted one of the world's most popular airlines.

Cathay Pacific further confirms that seven passengers and two crew have sustained minor injuries and are now being treated in hospital. A team of Cathay Pacific staff is on its way to Shanghai Pudong International Airport to provide support to the passengers, crew and families.

The airline is making arrangements to fly the remaining passengers involved onwards to their destinations. These include mounting an additional flight and upgrading a scheduled flight with a bigger aircraft which will provide additional seats. Further arrangements will be made as required.

Cathay Pacific releases details of new Premium Economy Class, announces new long-haul Economy seat
12 December 2011

Cathay Pacific Airways today released details of its new Premium Economy Class. The product, which will be progressively introduced on its long-haul flights from March 2012, will soon be available for passenger booking for flights departing from April 2012 onwards. At the same time, the airline announced that it will progressively introduce a new Economy Class seat on the majority of its long-haul aircraft, also beginning from March.

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive John Slosar said: “We are really excited about these latest innovations. As always, the comfort of our customers was front and centre of our design process and we believe the results represent a very significant upgrade in the product we offer.

“Premium Economy will be a real upgrade over Economy, and passengers will get great value for a great product. The seat will have a generous recline and plenty of legroom, and passengers will also enjoy improved service and many other extras.

“Our new long-haul Economy Class seat will also provide more space and comfort, particularly in the enhanced recline position. And with lots of extras - including the latest in inflight touch-screen personal televisions and mobile device connectivity - those long flights will be even more interesting and enjoyable.”

Emphasising Cathay Pacific’s commitment to continuous improvement of the airline’s products and services, Mr Slosar added: “Earlier this year we introduced our new Business Class to great acclaim and I’m sure our Premium Economy will have just as big an impact. And our new long-haul Economy Class seat highlights our strategy of providing a superior experience in all classes of travel.”

The new Premium Economy product will feature a quieter, more spacious cabin than the existing Economy Class with between 26 and 34 seats. The seat pitch will be 38 inches – six inches more than Economy Class – and the seat itself will be wider and have a bigger recline. It will have a large meal table, cocktail table, footrest, a 10.6-inch personal television, an in-seat power outlet, a multi-port connector for personal devices, and extra personal stowage space.

Customers will be offered a range of tailored products on the ground and in the air to provide a new kind of experience when travelling on the airline. It is targeted at those travellers who value a more spacious seat in a more private cabin, along with dedicated services and a number of additional features not available in the existing Economy Class cabin.

On the ground, passengers will enjoy priority check-in at dedicated counters and priority boarding before traditional Economy Class passengers. There will also be an increase in baggage allowance from 20kg to 25kg (weight system) or two pieces of baggage from 23 kg to 25kg each (piece system).

In the air, the Premium Economy Class seat offers a higher level of comfort with more living space in a separate cabin before the Economy Class zone. Passengers will also receive an environmentally friendly amenity kit with dental kit, socks and eyeshade for use during the journey. Larger pillows and noise-cancelling headsets will be provided to enhance the onboard experience.

Premium Economy passengers will be welcomed aboard with juice and champagne, and enjoy an enhanced onboard meal selection. Each passenger will also receive a bottle of water and additional snack choices to include more fresh fruit, energy bar and dessert.

The new Premium Economy cabin will be installed on all Cathay Pacific long-haul aircraft including Boeing 777-300ERs, Boeing 747-400s, Airbus A330-300s and Airbus A340-300s. The first 777-300ER and Airbus A330-300 featuring Premium Economy Class will enter into service in March, and will be available for sale in the first quarter of 2012 for flights departing from April 2012 onwards.

The airline plans to have 87 aircraft fitted with the product by the end of 2013. Premium Economy will initially be featured on the Sydney, Toronto and Vancouver and New York routes, followed by London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, continental Europe and other long-haul routes as the number of aircraft fitted with the product increases.

The new long-haul Economy Class seat will feature a cradle mechanism to enhance the level of comfort in the recline position, the latest high-resolution touch-screen personal televisions, a USB outlet and an iPod/iPhone outlet that allows passengers to connect their own mobile devices to view content through the personal televisions. The seat will also offer improved living space and more personal storage space.

The new seats will be fitted on all Cathay Pacific long-haul Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The first aircraft featuring the seats will enter service in March flying to Sydney and Toronto initially. A total of 36 Boeing 777-300ERs and 26 Airbus 330-300s will be fitted with the seats by December 2013.

Premium Economy

The Hong Kong flag-carrier's new Premium Economy cabin will be introduced on long-haul flights from March 2012, with Sydney among the first cities to see the new seat, along with Singapore, New York, Toronto and Vancouver. Cathay says that other North American, European and Middle East destinations will follow, incuding London, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The new Premium Economy product will feature a quieter, more spacious cabin than the existing Economy Class, with between 26 and 34 seats (depending on the aircaft type) in a separate cabin sandwhiched between the business and economy zones.

Carriers mired in cargo downturn
The Standard
Thursday, December 15, 2011

Cathay Pacific Airways (0293) and Dragonair saw a drop in cargo volume for the eighth consecutive month in November - traditionally a peak period - due to slower international trade.

Cargo and mail carried during the month fell 13.8 percent from a year ago to 132,430 tonnes. Load factor of cargo and mail, or space that was filled with cargo on flight, declined by 6.3 percentage points to 65.3 percent.

"November is traditionally the busiest time for our cargo business in the build-up to the Christmas season in the US and Europe, but the peak simply didn't arrive this year,"said Cathay general manager of cargo sales and marketing James Woodrow. "Demand out of our key Hong Kong and China markets was soft throughout the month and we reduced capacity accordingly."

Passenger volume climbed 4.2 percent from a year back to 2.27 million, while the passenger load factor fell by 2 percentage points to 78.5 percent.

James Tong, general manager of revenue management, said bookings for the Christmas peak season have been in line with expectations, but the outlook for early 2012 remains uncertain.
