New route opens the door to China
8 December 2014
Manchester Evening News Excerpt

I DON'T mean to brag but I'm penning this week's column from Hong Kong. And by the time you read it, the first direct flight from the former British colony to Manchester, operated by Cathay Pacific, should have touched down.

This is a hugely significant moment, as it marks a link between this city and China, singled out as the country our city leaders want to forge trade links with the most.

Clearly, our relationship with the likes of Abu Dhabi, India and other fast-growing economies - as well as key established ones - are hugely important too.

However, the establishment of a Manchester-China forum illustrates how vital our connections with the Far East are viewed by those plotting the city's future prosperity. And during my time here, it has been interesting to see what is known about Manchester.

The in-flight magazine was a good starting point. On the cover was a picture of Old Trafford, with a feature inside exploring the city. The first paragraph read: "It is both a matter of pride and chagrin to Manchester locals that its global claim to fame rests squarely on the 22 legs of its legendary football team."

This may rankle City fans, but it goes to show how successful United has been at raising its profile across the world, despite a recent downturn in form.

It also goes to show how powerful it is in terms of luring tourists and investors to Manchester.

Frequent fliers in Cathay Pacific's cheap seats face big let-down
11 January 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Cathay Pacific is set to revamp its two frequent-flier programmes - with high-spending customers winning out over regular economy travellers, sources have told the Sunday Morning Post.

While details have yet to be confirmed, the airline's Marco Polo Club is expected to be overhauled to focus on big spenders travelling only with Cathay and its sister airline Dragonair. Members would not benefit for flights on other airlines in the Oneworld Alliance and the club would focus on those who pay for premium seats or buy the most expensive, fully flexible economy fares.

The big losers would be economy-class passengers who have made enough journeys to reach the club's higher tiers and benefit from perks such as lounge access.

They would be directed to a new version of the Asia Miles scheme, which allows customers to redeem air miles on Cathay, Dragonair and Oneworld flights but offers minimal other perks.

Cathay, which has won a range of awards for its frequent-flier schemes, said it would make an announcement "if and when" the changes came to fruition.

"We look forward to introducing initiatives that will benefit our passengers, and in particular our most loyal customers, to ensure they enjoy a rewarding travel experience with us," a spokeswoman for the carrier said.

Cathay proposed last month that those eligible for lounge access as members of the club's silver tier - which can require 20 or more economy-class flights a year - might only be allowed four lounge passes per year.

Chinese farmer who lit up cigarette on Cathay flight 'didn't know it was illegal as he can't read'
10 January 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

A Chinese farmer who saw his "free trip" turn into an expensive nightmare after lighting up a cigarette in-flight was illiterate and had no idea smoking on planes was illegal, a court heard.

Xu Miaoqing, 61, from mainland China, made headlines after being caught smoking in the toilet on a Cathay Pacific flight from Bangkok on Christmas Day.

Yesterday, he was hit with a HK$2,000 fine after pleading guilty in Tsuen Wan Court in Hong Kong to a charge of smoking in an aircraft.

In mitigation, Xu's lawyer told the court his client was illiterate and did not know he was not allowed to smoke on the plane.

Besides the fine, the court heard that the case had cost Xu dear. He had to give up his travel documents during the investigation. And the period he had spent in Hong Kong had cost the Shanghai man a quarter of his income for the year. His holiday was meant to be free - a gift from his niece.

The court heard that a steward on flight CX708 went to the toilet cubicle after an alarm sounded. Xu was inside and there was a strong smell of smoke. A cigarette butt was found in the bowl.

On arrival, he admitted to police that he had been smoking.

Cathay Pacific to operate more San Francisco flights from June
Press Release Excerpt
15 Jan 2015

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that it will launch an additional three-times-weekly direct service between Hong Kong and San Francisco commencing 11 June 2015.

The three extra flights, operating as CX892/893, will bring the total number of Cathay Pacific flights between Hong Kong and San Francisco to 17 a week, providing more choice, greater convenience and improved connectivity for passengers travelling through the Hong Kong hub to the West Coast of the United States.

Cathay Pacific Chief Operating Officer Rupert Hogg said: “Adding an evening departure out of Hong Kong will give our passengers more flexibility when travelling to San Francisco. These additional flights will also be a boon for the significant number of passengers who choose to travel through the Hong Kong hub to connect to a huge number of Asian destinations in the networks of Cathay Pacific and our sister airline, Dragonair.”

Cathay confirms loyalty plan overhaul
18 January 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Cathay Pacific says its frequent-flier scheme has become too popular and is unsustainable in its current form.

In the airline’s first response to the Sunday Morning Post’s revelation last Sunday that a major overhaul to the scheme was on its way, it said: “The overarching belief is that the current approach has to change.”

Complaints include crowded lounges and overextended priority-boarding privileges, with the effect that passengers who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year no longer feel rewarded for their loyalty.

The Marco Polo Club rewards travellers based on the distance flown and the number of flights taken, but the Hong Kong carrier says this is “not always the best measure of value”.

“Airlines all over the world are recognising the anomalies created by a mileage or sector-based reward and recognition system,” it added.

“We are carefully studying the impact of this and the possible implications for the Marco Polo Club in terms of how members earn their status and what benefits and recognition they should be receiving based on the value they bring to the airline.”

Changes are likely to come on line next year with the Marco Polo Club focusing on big spenders who travel only with Cathay and its sister carrier, Dragonair. Customers of premium seats or the most expensive, fully flexible economy fares stand to benefit.

Another rewards scheme, Asia Miles, is being designed to benefit frequent fliers who buy cheaper seats. It offers free flights and upgrades, but not lounge access or priority boarding.

Snow joke as flight is delayed 24 hours
31 January 2015
Manchester Evening News Excerpt

PASSENGERS on a flight from Manchester Airport to Hong Kong were delayed for more than 24 hours.

Cathay Pacific's CX358 was due to fly out on Thursday morning at midday but the airport's closure due to snow resulted in a delay, with passengers not boarding until 2.35pm. It was among a number of planes to be affected by the weather. The jet was then de-iced but as the pilot prepared to taxi to the runway, snow began to fall again so a decision was made to reschedule the flight for safety reasons.

This meant a replacement crew was needed so passengers were taken off and taken to a hotel.

Yesterday morning, the flight was rescheduled for 11am but was delayed due to 'operational issues' and ongoing bad weather. The flight finally took off at 12.52pm - after a delay of nearly 25 hours.

One passenger, who asked not to be named, said: "I can't believe you can have these problems from one inch of snow. On Friday they didn't even have it ready when they asked us to start boarding.

What a pleasant surprise! Not sure whether this has been discussed previously but...

Fly non-stop from Hong Kong to Düsseldorf, 4 times a week starting 1 September 2015

http://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_H...LDATE=20150907

I guess it must be because of the large Asian population in the nice German city that CX chose to fly there. In any case, nice to see CX expanding its Europe network. I've always thought they had been neglecting the European market until recently.

I am surprise that CX is launching this route with a 4 class 777. I thought they might want to wait to launch this route with a A350. Time will tell if this route will be a good one. CX does have Air Berlin in Dusseldorf to help with passenger feed on the Germany and end since they are both ONE WORLD members.
