Dragonair named as Skytrax ‘World’s Best Regional Airline’ for fourth time – a first for any carrier
Press Release Excerpt
17 Jun 2015

(HONG KONG) Dragonair is delighted to have been named “World’s Best Regional Airline” in the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards™ – the fourth time the carrier has received the honour. No other airline has achieved this feat since this category was added to the awards in 2010. In a double accolade for Dragonair, the carrier was also named “Best Regional Airline in Asia” in the same survey.

The Skytrax World Airline AwardsTM is the largest airline passenger satisfaction survey and the most prestigious among all the surveys measuring airline service excellence. Based on the votes of more than 18 million airline passengers from over 160 countries, the survey covered more than 275 airlines and assessed customer-service standards across more than 41 criteria including check-in, boarding, onboard seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food and beverages, inflight entertainment and staff service.

Dragonair Chief Executive Officer Algernon Yau expressed his pride and pleasure at the award ceremony, held at the Paris Air Show on 16 June. “It is a very great honour to receive such recognition from travellers, and on behalf of Dragonair I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted for us,” he said. “We are extremely proud to share this achievement with the people of Hong Kong, the city that has been our home for 30 years.”

I wonder how many Boeing 747-400 left in CX fleet, and where do they normally deploy the type?

4 per their website : https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...act-sheet.html

The passenger 747s are being gradually phased out. Haneda is a sure bet but these get rotated around the region for short/medium-haul flights as a surprise.

Cathay shows its bottle in tainted water probe
The Standard Excerpt
Friday, June 26, 2015

Health authorities are tracing the source of contamination after coliform levels in water tanks of 14 Cathay Pacific aircraft were found to be unsatisfactory.

The affected aircraft are five Boeing 777s, three Boeing 747s, five Airbus A330s and one Airbus A340.

The water tanks of nine have been sterilized and the remaining five will be cleaned before June 27, the Department of Health's Port Health Office said.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co, which transports water from airport supply stations to the jets, has cleaned all its 11 vehicles.

"We have already looked into the steps involved in water supply. No source of contamination has been identified yet," a health department spokesman said.

Water and environmental samples were drawn from the supply stations, and samples were collected from each water- carrying vehicle.

Another 10 samples were collected from five other airlines, he added.

Most coliform organisms are harmless, but high levels indicate poor hygiene.

Tainted airline water may be from outside Hong Kong, say investigators
6 July 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Investigators led by the Health Department suspect the contaminated water found on board 14 Cathay Pacific aircraft could have come from outside Hong Kong, meaning that it will take longer to identify the source.

A source close to the investigation said health officers believed water tankers at Chek Lap Kok airport were not the source of the contamination last month.

"Three of the 14 flights did not obtain water from Hong Kong International Airport," the source said. "The amount of coliform bacteria found in the tankers was insignificant. It's impossible for them to contaminate drinking water on more than a dozen flights."

The complex nature of the incident might lead to a longer investigation, which started on June 25.

A spokesperson for the department said the 14 aircraft "did not share a common route" and collected water "in Hong Kong and at other airports".

Cathay said it was "not appropriate" to comment at this stage.

Tests on 13 of the Cathay aircraft found no traces of coliform bacteria. The Health Department said the remaining result would be released early this week.

The department announced last Monday that small traces of bacteria were identified in two water tankers: one operated by the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (Haeco) and another by Pan Asia Pacific Aviation Services.

500,000 Hong Kong travellers a year may be affected by proposed night-landing ban at Heathrow
5 July 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Half a million Hong Kong travellers a year may be affected by a proposed night ban on landing at Heathrow, which could kick in if the British government approves the airport's long-awaited third runway.

Four of Hong Kong's eight daily departures to London now land between 11.30pm and 6am.

The proposed ban stems from the planned runway's ability to accommodate the dozens of overnight flights now arriving before 6am - and is meant to make noise pollution in the middle of the night a thing of the past.

However, a third runway, if realised, is still a decade away.

Britain's Airports Commission released its findings on building a new airstrip in southeast England only on Wednesday. "A third runway would create the opportunity to end night flights before 6am," it said. "This opportunity should be taken … There should be a ban."

It said passengers in transit to continental Europe on morning flights could seek alternative connections from rival European or Middle Eastern airports.

Hong Kong tops a list of cities that are set to be affected by the ban. The city alone flies up to 480,755 people overnight to Heathrow a year, amounting to 53 per cent of scheduled seats, day and night. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are the next two heaviest routes affected.

Of the eight daily direct flights from Hong Kong to London, five are taken up by Cathay Pacific. British Airways flies twice a day, while Virgin Atlantic operates one service.

Cathay said a third runway in Heathrow and Hong Kong presented new flying opportunities, but the construction and operations were still years away.

Five daily flights are not enough for Cathay on a route that is one of its most profitable. Sources at the airline said it was keen to launch a sixth service, but could not obtain landing and take-off slots in London.

Extra flights sent to Bali for stranded travellers
12 July 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt
Additional reporting by Agence France-Presse and Associated Press

As Denpasar airport reopens after volcanic ash disruption, airlines resume full service

Rescue flights are heading to Bali today to bring back some of the estimated 1,600 Hong Kong travellers stranded after a volcanic eruption on Friday sent ash drifting over the tourist island.

With Bali’s international airport reopening yesterday, Cathay Pacific will send an extra plane and Hong Kong Airlines is operating two extra services, in addition to five flights already scheduled for the day.

Earlier, both carriers cancelled six flights between them on Friday and yesterday, stranding travellers with tickets to Hong Kong and onward destinations.

One passenger who was supposed to return to the city yesterday criticised his airline for being “too quick” to cancel the flights and too slow with its re-bookings.

“It looked like they rushed into that cancellation and will have two days of backlog to clear instead of one,” the solo traveller said, declining to be named.

“I still have no idea when I’ll fly. But the mood is relaxed, and there are worse places to be stuck. Just worried there is going to be a backlog and that long-haul passengers will take priority over local Hongkongers.”

Mount Raung in East Java province, about 150km from Bali’s airport, has been rumbling for several weeks. The level of activity increased in the past week and, on Friday, it blasted ash and debris 3,800 metres into the air.

The airport in Denpasar shut down, prompting the cancellation of 330 flights that day and chaotic scenes at the terminal as hundreds of passengers milled about anxiously.

But by yesterday morning, Indonesian authorities had lifted the no-fly-zone warning.

Cathay Pacific releases combined traffic figures for June 2015
Press Release Excerpt
14 Jul 2015

Cathay Pacific Airways today released combined Cathay Pacific and Dragonair traffic figures for June 2015 that show a healthy rise in the number of passengers carried compared to the same month in 2014, but only a marginal increase in the volume of cargo and mail uplifted.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried a total of 2,810,592 passengers in June – an increase of 7.6% compared to the June 2014. The passenger load factor grew by 1.3 percentage points to 87.2% while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), increased by 6.1%. In the first six months of 2015, passenger traffic grew by 8.8% while capacity was up by 6.4%

The two airlines carried 141,136 tonnes of cargo and mail last month, an increase of 0.5% compared to June 2014. The cargo and mail load factor fell by 2.2 percentage points to 62.7%. Capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, rose by 5.9% while cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres (RTKs) flown increased by 2.2%. In the first six months of 2015, tonnage rose by 8.0% against a capacity increase of 8.9% and a 10.5% rise in RTKs.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Revenue Management Patricia Hwang said: “The increase in passenger numbers continued to keep ahead of capacity growth last month and we saw high load factors across our network. The last week of June was particularly busy as we moved into the summer peak period, with strong demand for both long-haul and regional travel. Our new routes to Zurich and Boston have both been performing ahead of expectations. However, we saw a sharp falloff in bookings for Korea after the Hong Kong SAR Government raised the Red Outbound Travel Alert in response to the MERS outbreak. Premium demand remained behind target on a number of key long-haul routes though we saw growth within the region.”

Cleaning staff activate plane’s emergency slide
15 July 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

A blunder by aircraft cleaners caused an emergency slide on a Cathay Pacific jet to inflate yesterday morning, delaying 277 travellers bound for Chicago.

Ground crew and cleaning staff were preparing flight CX806 for its departure, as the plane was at its parking stand at Hong Kong airport, during the time of the slide’s activation. No passengers were onboard at the time.

The plane was immediately taken out of service for inspection – a normal procedure following deployment of a slide – and passengers were delayed as they waited for a replacement Boeing 777 aircraft.

“We suspect there was a procedural error by a staff member from our cleaning services provider. It had nothing to do with any technical issues,” an airline spokeswoman said.

The Airport Authority said it received a report at about 10.15am that a Cathay Pacific airliner’s emergency slide had been deployed and inflated. Flight CX806 departed 90 minutes late, taking off at 1.30pm.
