Why we miss the good old days of Cathay
5 November 2015
Hong Kong Economic Journal Excerpt

Next time you fly Cathay Pacific, you'll probably give its aircraft a second look. The Hong Kong flag carrier has just unveiled a new livery.

The subtle changes mainly involve the brushwing logo, a simplified color palette and a more prominent wordmark.

So far the feedback from frequent flyers and aviation buffs is mostly negative, with some finding the new look “too simple and humdrum” and less intriguing compared to the previous version that had been around since 1994.

Cathay’s new paint job lacks compelling elements compared with that of rivals such as British Airways, Emirates, Qantas, Korean Air and Thai Airways.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, as they say. But one possible explanation for the new look has something to do with costs.

The mainly white design of the fuselage can help trim the overall weight of the plane by roughly 200 kilograms, thus saving the airline up to HK$1.5 million per year in jet fuel expenses per aircraft, a Cathay engineer told an aviation forum.

Another change already underway is the accelerated retirement of its once beloved Boeing 747-400 jetliners, the hump-backed, two-deck icon of yesteryears endearingly called the Queen of the Skies.

Cathay currently has only three such planes left in service and it will bid farewell to the very last one of its most recognizable quad-engine model no later than 2017.

See, I told you. The new livery is just too cold and bland for Hong Kong or even Asian countries. They should have add a bit of red to the livery.

Excerpt

HONG KONG--Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (0293.HK) says demand for the airline's flights to Paris is holding up well after Friday's terror attacks, but it would consider combining flights if necessary.

The carrier operates 10 weekly flights between its base in Hong Kong and Paris, said Rupert Hogg, the airline's chief operating officer.

I believe they have 748 freighters. For passenger jets, CX likes to increase frequencies to cater for the business traveller instead of cannibalizing yields with so many seats for sale. Also, the A380 was a new beast and they were smart not to have committed as a launch customer, only to be set back several years from all sorts of delays.

In an interview with Apple Daily, Cathay Pacific's Director Corporate Affairs Officer, James Tong, said with the expansion of its fleet, they are looking to expand.

From the article:

Quote:
Direct flights in Tel Aviv, (expected next year in August), . James Tong said. Other studies also offer direct flights to places including Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, as well as Hawaii, Houston, and even Miami.

As in the past few connecting Hong Kong's South American market, now has "Watch List" in Cathay inside. James Tong said the company is examining the possibility of a transit station in Miami, connecting passengers to many countries in South America, where as many as 20 million people, Brazil's main city of Sao Paulo is one of the "heart of the water" after two years it is expected that the fastest, namely 2017 was implemented.

I think MIA makes a lot of sense for CX. Huge OneWorld hub at HKG and MIA and good feed off of Latin America.

Cathay to pay $4 million to settle Canada price-fixing probe
30 November 2015
Journal of Commerce Excerpt

HONG KONG — Cathay Pacific has agreed to pay $4.4 million to settle litigation in Canada in a cargo anti-trust class action in which the carrier was a defendant.

The Hong Kong-based airline agreed to make the payment, subject to approval by the Canada's courts, without admitting any unlawful conduct, the carrier said in a filing to the Hong Kong Exchange.

Cathay Pacific has been subjected to anti-trust charges in several countries. It was fined $60 million in 2008 for collusion in air cargo prices with other airlines in a criminal anti-trust case in the U.S. Then in February last year, the airline agreed to pay $65 million to settle a U.S. anti-trust class action suit.

Air cargo carriers came under scrutiny from anti-trust regulators back in 2006 when government officials from the U.S., Europe and Asia launched dawn raids to issue warrants and demand documents from dozens of airlines.

Woman fined for stealing airline life jacket
The Standard Excerpt
Wednesday, December 02, 2015

內地婦何有娣(右)被判罰款二千元,昨籌錢後才能繳款離開。

A mainland traveler was yesterday fined HK$2,000 for stealing a life jacket as a "souvenir" from a Cathay Pacific flight.

The 64-year-old woman, He Youdi was criticized by Tsuen Wan magistrate Cheang Kei-hong for being greedy and ignoring that her action would leave the aircraft one life jacket short in case of an emergency.

The woman admitted stealing the life jacket on a flight from Taipei to Hong Kong on Monday. She was meant to fly on to Xian when airport security spotted the life jacket during X-ray luggage checks.

He admitted she had taken the life jacket as a souvenir of her trip.

She fainted when she arrived at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court and was taken to hospital but returned later and pleaded guilty.
