Cathay Pacific’s new Gatwick service to offer more choice and flexibility for London travel
Press Release lease Excerpt
10 Dec 2015

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that it will launch a new four-times-weekly service to London’s Gatwick Airport on 2 September 2016, subject to government approval. The new service will complement the airline’s current five-times-daily service to Heathrow Airport for a total of 39 flights a week between Hong Kong and London – more than any other carrier. In addition to serving London, Cathay Pacific also offers a four-times-weekly service between Hong Kong and Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Gatwick Airport is located south of London close to the town of Crawley in West Sussex. It is the second-largest international airport in the United Kingdom. The new service will provide passengers living in Greater London and the counties of Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex and Hampshire a more convenient way to travel to Hong Kong and via the extensive hub to Asia and beyond.

Cathay Pacific will operate the Gatwick service with its brand new Airbus A350-900 aircraft featuring a refreshed Business Class cabin as well as new Premium Economy Class and Economy Class seats. Together with the premium service provided by Cathay Pacific’s cabin crew and a state-of-the-art inflight entertainment system in all classes, passengers will be assured of the best inflight experience when they travel between Hong Kong and London.

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Ivan Chu said: “Cathay Pacific has been serving London for 35 years and our commitment to the UK market is very strong. We are delighted to launch a non-stop service to Gatwick, using our new state-of-the-art A350 aircraft, which will help meet increasing demand for both business and leisure travel between the Asia Pacific region and the UK.

Bigger Aircraft On Cathay Pacific’s Hong Kong Service
10 December 2015
New Zealand Transport Intelligence Business Alert

Cathay Pacific Airways last week allocated bigger B773ER aircraft to one of its double-daily Hong Kong/Auckland services for the busy summer season until early March. These replace A343 aircraft which will continue operating the early morning flight. The carrier is looking at the possibility of using new A350XWB aircraft on the Auckland run from later next year. Cathay Pacific has had a long involvement with NZ including employment of many NZ pilots and other staff. It is owned by Swire Pacific, a listed company whose diverse interests include shipping lines with strong NZ links.

The airline has begun rolling out a new livery for all aircraft in its large fleet. Three key design elements are the incorporation of the updated and streamlined brushwing first seen late last year, a simplification of the colour palette to green, grey and white and a more prominent display of the company name. CEO Ivan Chu describes the livery makeover as “the beginning of a new era” for the carrier. It “represents Cathay Pacific in and out of Hong Kong and every time our aircraft take off or touch down in our network of destinations around the world.”

Next time you fly Cathay Pacific, you'll probably give its aircraft a second look. The Hong Kong flag carrier has just unveiled a new livery.

The subtle changes mainly involve the brushwing logo, a simplified color palette and a more prominent wordmark.

So far the feedback from frequent flyers and aviation buffs is mostly negative, with some finding the new look “too simple and humdrum” and less intriguing compared to the previous version that had been around since 1994.

Cathay’s new paint job lacks compelling elements compared with that of rivals such as British Airways, Emirates, Qantas, Korean Air and Thai Airways.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, as they say. But one possible explanation for the new look has something to do with costs.

The mainly white design of the fuselage can help trim the overall weight of the plane by roughly 200 kilograms, thus saving the airline up to HK$1.5 million per year in jet fuel expenses per aircraft, a Cathay engineer told an aviation forum.

Another change already underway is the accelerated retirement of its once beloved Boeing 747-400 jetliners, the hump-backed, two-deck icon of yesteryears endearingly called the Queen of the Skies.

Cathay currently has only three such planes left in service and it will bid farewell to the very last one of its most recognizable quad-engine model no later than 2017.
Yes, the new livery looks like the old one, and it's a corporate-boring livery. I would love to see a Cathay livery with a vibrant, sophisticated shade of green as its main color. You know, a green with an wow factor into it.

An erratic distribution of regional routes.

The new livery is bland, monotonous, and lacking with variety.

It hope this is not the final product. All cabins in green, that cannot look nice, really! Please not another disappointment CX. Apart from the color scheme used, premium economy and economy are hideous. I know they might be comfortable but it's so ugly.

I agree. If you observe the updated business class seat, it seems to have less storage area than the current seat. (e.g. where is the shoe storage cabin?)

They seem to use two different shades of green, the lighter one and the darker one as observed in the new economy class seats. But it still seems too monotonous. The only good thing is the larger PTV screen, but I think the seat is too narrow to be comfortable. Again, I hope for something better from CX.

A stark contrast to the Cathay Pacific commercials in the past that truly evocative, emotional, and really showing the glory of air travel.

Even when compared to their adverts in 1995 (when the current livery was introduced) it is absolutely mediocre.

Mid-air scare: Hong Kong-to-Delhi flight has brake issues but lands safely
21 December 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

A Cathay Pacific Airways flight bound for Delhi arrived one hour late after experiencing brake issues on Saturday evening in a journey described as a "near death experience".

CX695 carried about 250 passengers and landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at 10.17pm, about one hour later than scheduled. No injuries were reported.

The flight had departed from Hong Kong International Airport at 5.22pm on Saturday.

A Facebook message believed to have been posted by a flight attendant on board said the crew prepared for an emergency landing after one brake was not working properly.

The message's author said she felt "near death" as some on board held hands across the aisles to pray. The message described sparks being visible from one side of the plane and a smell of burnt objects.

"I was very scared," the author wrote. "My supervisor held my hand. At last, thank God. Thanks to all the cockpit crew. Landing was good and smooth. I cried and we hugged each other after landing."

A brake issue shouldn't be that dramatic should it? Sounds as if the plane has crash landed or something

The burning smell may have spoofed some people since in-flight fires are very dangerous and have been causes of crashes before (Swissair).
