Cathay Pacific releases combined traffic figures for January 2016
Press Release Excerpt
17 Feb 2016

Cathay Pacific Airways today released combined Cathay Pacific and Dragonair traffic figures for January 2016 that show a double-digit increase in the number of passengers carried compared to the same month in 2015, but only a marginal rise in the volume of cargo and mail uplifted.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried a total of 2,897,890 passengers last month – an increase of 10.9% compared to January 2015. The passenger load factor grew by 3.3 percentage points to 86.0% while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), grew by 5.9%.

The two airlines carried 147,690 tonnes of cargo and mail in January, a 0.3% increase compared to the same month last year. The cargo and mail load factor fell by 1.8 percentage points to 61.6%. Capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, was up by 2.4% while cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres (RTKs) flown decreased by 0.5%.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Revenue Management Patricia Hwang said: “After a busy Christmas peak, we continued to see robust demand for flights across both airlines’ networks in January. At 86%, the combined load factor was the highest January figure since Dragonair became part of the Cathay Pacific Group. We continued to see strong traffic flows on key regional routes last month, and Economy Class demand on long-haul services remained high. However, demand in the long-haul premium cabins once again lagged expectations, while yield was affected by a combination of factors including unfavourable currency movements.”

Cathay flies into oil price turbulence
22 February 2016
The Standard Excerpt

Global stocks rebounded substantially last week amid signs oil producers may reduce production. Brent oil prices are now at US$33 (HK$257.40) per barrel, recovering from a recent low of US$28.

With fuel hedging practiced by airlines, Cathay Pacific (0293) is always a focus of the media.

In March, when Brent prices were near US$70, Cathay said it hedged 61 percent of its fuel consumption at US$95 in 2015, while for 2016, it was 60 percent hedged at US$85. With current Brent prices at US$33, the carrier is in a very uncomfortable position.

For, in the first half last year, Cathay reported a US$480 million hedging loss, compared with an operating profit of US$303 million. At that time, Brent oil price was US$68 per barrel.

In the second half, unrealized hedging losses were expected to grow to around US$1 billion when Brent prices fell to US$45 at the end of December.

The loss is more than three times its half-year operating profit. Now that oil prices are only US$33, unrealized loss will grow even bigger!

Cathay Pacific 2015 net profit jumps 90.5 pct on low oil prices, strong demand
Excerpt

BEIJING, March 9 - Cathay Pacific Airways reported on Wednesday a more than 90 percent surge in net profit for 2015, beating estimates, as record low crude oil prices and a higher contribution from its affiliate Air China boosted income.

Cathay said annual net profit was HK$6 billion ($772.57 million), slightly higher than the HK$5.7 billion estimate of 16 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters Smart Estimate.

In its earnings statement, Cathay said contributions from its partners had improved, without giving details. The plunge in crude oil prices also helped reduce fuel costs by 37.8 percent from a year ago, it added.

Air China, in which Cathay owns about a third, said in January it expects its annual net profit to rise by up to 80 percent as demand for air travel from China soars.

Dragonair passenger numbers, Cathay Pacific Cargo tonnage show strong growth
Bangladesh Monitor Excerpt

Dhaka, March 16 -- The year 2015 was an excellent year for Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific and its sister regional airline Dragonair in Bangladesh. Soon to be rebranded as Cathay Dragon, Dragonair witnessed strong growth in passenger numbers from Dhaka whilst Cathay Pacific cargo also registered significant increases.

James Conlin, Coun-try Manager Bangladesh and Bhutan, Cathay Pacific Air-ways said this while talking to the Bangla-desh Monitor at the latter's office.

Cathay Pacific freighters serve Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport three times a week_ with B747-400Fs and B747-800s. The latter came into service with Cathay Pacific in 2013. Dragonair operates 6 passenger flights a week to Hong Kong connecting to the 200 worldwide destinations served by the Cathay Pacific Group.

Conlin said, "We hope for robust growth in Bangladesh again this year," adding increasing capacity to Dhaka "is something that we'll continue to look at."

"Hong Kong continues to play an important role in the development of Bangladesh and serves as a key hub for its business. With first-rate infrastructure, accessibility, and proximity to Asian markets, many multinational companies choose to base their regional offices in Hong Kong."

About the passenger mix from Dhaka, he said, it was a blend of businesspersons and families travelling to Hong Kong and elsewhere in East Asia, North America, and Australia. "North America and Australia-bound passenger numbers saw strong growth in 2015 and we'll continue to focus on the two regions as well as our home markets of Hong Kong and China. Our connectivity and flight duration from Dhaka to North America and Australia are very competitive," he said.

Cathay Pacific’s first A350-900 completes maiden flight
25 March 2016
Air Transport World Excerpt

The first A350-900 for Cathay Pacific Airways has completed its maiden flight in Toulouse, France, Airbus said in a statement.

The aircraft will now enter the final phase of production including cabin completion, further ground checks and test flights before being prepared for delivery in the second quarter of the year.

The carrier was originally expecting to receive its initial A350 in February, but delivery has been delayed because of supply issues with seat manufacturer Zodiac Aerospace.

Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Dusseldorf turns back due to issue with inflight entertainment system
12 April 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

A Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Dusseldorf had to turn back to Hong Kong International Airport shortly after it took off in the early hours of Tuesday.

The airline said the flight had to return due to a suspected technical fault with the inflight entertainment system's cooling system.

Flight CX379 took off at 12.50am on April 12. It landed back at Hong Kong International Airport at 2.21am. The Boeing 777-300ER was carrying 269 passengers and 18 crew members.

An Airport Authority spokesman said the airport received a report from the control tower at around 2am that the flight needed to be turned back.

"The flight landed safely at 2.21am. During that time, operations at the airport were not affected," the spokesman said.

Cathay Pacific said none of the passengers were injured during the incident.

Cathay Pacific releases combined traffic figures for March 2016
Press Release Excerpt
20 Apr 2016

Cathay Pacific Airways today released combined Cathay Pacific and Dragonair traffic figures for March 2016 that show an increase in the number of passengers carried compared to the same month in 2015, alongside a marginal decrease in the volume of cargo and mail uplifted.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried a total of 2,960,915 passengers last month – an increase of 2.6% compared to March 2015. The passenger load factor fell by 3.4 percentage points to 83.9% while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), grew by 5.2%. In the first quarter of 2016, the number of passengers carried rose by 5.3% compared to a 6.5% increase in capacity.

The two airlines carried 157,006 tonnes of cargo and mail in March, a drop of 0.4% compared to the same month last year. The cargo and mail load factor fell by 5.4 percentage points to 63.0%. Capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, increased by 4.1% while cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres (RTKs) fell by 4.1%. In the first quarter of the year, the tonnage carried fell by 3.1% against a 2.6% increase in capacity and a 4.8% drop in RTKs.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Revenue Management Patricia Hwang said: “Passenger traffic was generally robust in March, although the growth in passenger numbers was not able to keep pace with the growth in capacity, leading to a drop in load factor. Traffic was boosted by the Easter holiday and school holidays at the end of the month, with strong demand to the major holiday destinations in the region. The proximity of the Ching Ming festival to Easter resulted in higher demand for long-haul travel over the holiday period. However, demand in the premium cabins continued to fall short of expectations, which in turn put downward pressure on yield.”

If Dragon Air is fully part of Cathay why dont they repaint all the aircraft into CX liveries?
Why creating a new brand under the Cathay Dragon name?
Even AA repainted all of US Airways aircrafts. Big fish is eating small fish.

Dragon Pacific (Dragon Air) is Cathay Pacific low cost / Regional division which serves mainland China destinations whilst Cathay Pacific serves International destinations.

Dragonair is NOT a low-cost carrier. It is full-service and focuses on regional routes. Dragonair has huge brand recognition in China - much moreso than Cathay, so the rebranding can't drastically change this.
