Wi-fi will be switched on once a flight reaches 10,000 feet, and switched off when a plane descends beneath that when coming in for landings.
I doubt that Wi-fi will be availabe, while the plane is travelling in Mainland Chinese airspace.
As HKG is surrounded by Mainland China from 3 sides, CX should have noted that in their press release.

Should only impact the first few hours of Europe and east coast North America flights that overfly China. Otherwise west coast North America, Japan, Korea, Middle East, India, ASEAN, ANZ, etc. all won't be impacted. CX doesn't fly much to points in China.

Airport may have lured a potential carrier for South Florida's first non-stop flight to Asia
8 June 2016
South Florida Business Journal Excerpt

Asia's largest airline by passengers is in the process of securing dozens of new planes, and one of the aircraft could be used for non-stop or direct flights between Miami and Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has 48 A350 aircraft on order, and a variation of the model called the A350-8000 could handle the ultra-long-haul flight between Miami and Asia. Cathay CEO Ivan Chu told Bloomberg he is considering a proposal from Airbus Group SE to add the larger version of the plane to Cathay's fleet.

Chu's comments followed a meeting with Miami-Dade Aviation officials at an international summit, according to the Miami Herald. Miami International Airport officials are bullish on securing a direct or non-stop flight to Asia, and late last year launched the MIA Asia Task Force made up of airport executives and local business leaders who can help lure the right carrier to launch the coveted flight.

Most major cities in the U.S. have a direct or nonstop flight to Asia, but Miami is the furthest U.S. point from the continent.

Perhaps Cathay could be lured into a fifth-freedom flight to São Paulo-Guarulhos. MIA-GRU is Miami's busiest international route.

Cathay sacks 17 as traffic slows
17 June 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Information technology chief and 16 other IT workers lose jobs in 'realignment' as the carrier reports weaker passenger loads

Cathay Pacific Airways has laid off the head of its information technology department and 16 other staff, a week after chairman John Slosar said there were no plans for staff cutbacks in a cost-cutting campaign involving a hiring freeze announced last month.

In an emailed response to the Post, Cathay confirmed it had laid off director of information technology Joe Locandro and 16 other IT staff on Monday, saying it was a "realignment" of its IT organisation aimed at raising productivity.

"This is not a cost-control exercise and there is no plan for redundancy," it said."There are more than 700 staff in the IT department and the realignment involved changes in 17 jobs."

Cathay presentation shows how companies avoid offending Beijing
16 June 2016
Hong Kong Economic Journal Excerpt

There's one cardinal, though unwritten, rule for companies operating in China: try not to offend your host.

That's obviously the reason why cosmetics giant Lancôme canceled a promotional event, in which Hong Kong pro-democracy pop star Denise Ho Wan-see was originally invited to perform.

The move triggered a lot of controversy in Hong Kong, where pro-democracy groups called for a boycott of the French conglomerate's products and shops.

That's also evident in a video presentation made by Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. to introduce its new Airbus A350 aircraft.

The airline, which has ordered 48 units of the plane model to join its fleet, arranged for one of its chief pilots, Evan Summerfield, to make a live video-streaming presentation Wednesday afternoon on its Facebook page from the cockpit of an A350 plane parked at a hangar of Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Ltd., standnews.com reports.

Everything went smoothly as the pilot discussed the features of the new plane up until the Q&A session in which he fielded questions from his online audience.

One netizen asked him if an A350 provides in-flight Wi-Fi service, and the pilot said there is absolutely no problem, adding that passengers can choose from several pricing packages.

However, Summerfield noted that passengers might be blocked from using Wi-Fi when the aircraft is flying within China’s airspace.

“At the moment, the only limitation [is], I think China, where there’s a Geo-block that we …,” he said, and was interrupted, after which he exchanged a few words with someone sitting beside him but not seen in the video.

When he resumed talking, the pilot, with an awkward smile on his face, said: “That’s all of it, Wi-Fi.”

Cathay bows to pressure and bans shark fin
23 June 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Airline joins other major carriers by slapping blanket ban on fins being carried on planes

Hong Kong's flagship airline has finally bowed to public pressure by slapping a blanket ban on shark fin being carried on any of its planes.

But Cathay Pacific, the city's biggest carrier, and its sister *airline Dragonair have left the door open to a possible U-turn by saying the new policy will be *subject to review.

The move - which will take *effect immediately - comes after budget airline HK Express became the first local carrier to axe shark fin shipments last month.

Cathay has faced sustained pressure from environmentalists, including protests at their check-in desks at Hong Kong International Airport and children petitioning airline executives.

"We understand the community's desire to promote responsible and sustainable marine sourcing practices, and this remains important to Cathay Pacific's overall sustainable development goals," Cathay said in a statement.

"Therefore, on the issue of shark fin, with immediate effect we are happy to agree to ban the carriage. We will continue to review this practice, as we do all our sustainable development policies."

Previously, Cathay chose not to impose an outright ban but instead set up a panel of experts to decide on a case-by-case basis whether each shipment was from a sustainable source.

The policy dates back to 2012, but since then three dozen airlines have gone one step further to implement an outright ban, leaving Cathay exposed to criticism. Campaigners argue it is often impossible to verify whether cargo is sustainable or not.

The old policy was described by the airline as "a more challenging approach than an outright ban".

South China Morning Post Excerpt
Cathay Pacific pilots reject new roster system and ban on new industrial actions until 2019
Disappointed airline vows to continue its focus on operations and growth
July 8, 2016

Cathay Pacific Airways pilots have narrowly defeated a proposal that would have introduced a roster system to curb fatigue on condition they halt their long-running industrial action and that their union would launch no additional actions until 2019.

The rejection meant the work-to-rule action, ongoing since December 2014, would continue at Hong Kong’s flagship airline. Cathay Pacific has already drastically scaled back its expansion plans this year, which included new international routes, because of the action.

The Post has learned that, of the 2,004 pilots who cast ballots, 53 per cent voted against the proposal and 46 per cent for it.

The Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association, representing 2,100 of the airline’s 2,900 pilots, wrote to its members on Friday: “While many of you may be disappointed given the tremendous amount of work that has gone into the agreement, as well as the potential benefits for both parties, a majority of you have decided that this deal is inadequate and have rejected it as such.”

Great photo of Cathay Pacific's Boeing 777-367 with the backdrop of volcanoes in East Java. This image was taken at Surabaya airport, from my Singapore bound airplane.

Cathay Pacific releases combined traffic figures for June 2016
Press Release Excerpt
18 Jul 2016

Cathay Pacific Airways today released combined Cathay Pacific and Dragonair traffic figures for June 2016 that show an increase in both the number of passengers carried and the amount of cargo and mail uplifted compared to the same month last year.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried a total of 2,870,943 passengers last month – an increase of 2.1% compared to June 2015. The passenger load factor fell by 1.7 percentage points to 85.5% while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), grew by 3.3%. In the first six months of 2016, the number of passengers carried rose by 2.7% compared to a 4.2% increase in capacity.

The two airlines carried 151,130 tonnes of cargo and mail in June, an increase of 7.1% compared to the same month last year. The cargo and mail load factor rose by 1.6 percentage points to 64.3%. Capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, rose by 2.1% while cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres (RTKs) increased by 4.8%. In the first six months of 2016, the tonnage carried fell by 0.3% against a 0.6% increase in capacity and a 2.3% drop in RTKs.

Commenting on the first six months of 2016, the airline’s Chief Executive, Ivan Chu, said: “Our performance over the first six months of 2016 has been below expectations. Passenger revenue has been adversely affected by the reduced load factor and intense pressure on yield. Cargo tonnage has stabilised but yield continues to decline. Foreign currency movements have also been adverse."

Cathay Pacific General Manager Revenue Management Patricia Hwang said: “Passenger traffic improved in June, although the growth in passenger numbers was not able to keep pace with the capacity increase, leading to a drop in load factor. Traffic grew as summer travel began, and one of our newest destinations, Madrid, became operational. The improvement also reflected our recovery from last year’s outbound travel alert to Korea, which was issued due to MERS. However, pressure on yield remains severe, with competition increasing and premium demand continuing to fall short of expectations.”
