Does anybody know whether if Cathay Pacific's very first Airbus A330 is still around?

You mean B-HLA? It is still in service with Cathay Dragon (formerly Dragonair). In fact, it is doing a flight from Shanghai/Hongqiao to Hong Kong as we speak.

Check out its flight list here

I remember that plane and Cathay's first A340 were the first planes that feature the current brush livery.
When CX first ordered the plane, they originally planned to paint the planes in green sandwich livery, but later reverted to newer livery.
Had they went ahead with the original plan, the plane would have looked like this!

Cathay Pacific, along with airlines like Delta and Air Canada, are proof that aircraft reliability is not associated with age but good maintenance and consistent cabin refurbishment.

In fact, we would fully understood the true reliability of airplane when it gets old.

Cathay Pacific A350s to fly longer routes
20 July 2016
Air Transport World Excerpt

Cathay Pacific Airways is starting to build up its Airbus A350-900 fleet, as it prepares for the aircraft’s long-haul debut later this year.

The carrier has taken delivery of its second A350, which is scheduled to enter service Wednesday. This follows the arrival of the first aircraft in May. Cathay will continue to fly both aircraft, which are leased from AerCap, on short-haul international flights, until more A350s arrive later in the third quarter of this year. Then, the A350s will start to be used on long-haul flights, including a new route from Hong Kong to London’s Gatwick Airport that is scheduled to launch in September.

Cathay is still on target to receive 22 A350s in 2016-17. The carrier “is working very closely with our cabin suppliers and Airbus to protect the integrity of the delivery program, and to ensure our A350-900 aircraft are delivered according to schedules,” an airline spokeswoman said.

The expected delivery schedule had to be revised earlier this year due to seat-production problems that also affected other A350 customers. Cathay CEO Ivan Chu said in June the carrier expects to receive nine A350s this year instead of the 12 originally scheduled. However, the 2017 rate will be increased to keep the two-year delivery total at 22.

The CX flight from Zürich to Hong Kong did not logged in to the Hungaro Control when entering the airspace of Hungary. The Defense Ministery said to the press that the B777 came from direction of Austria and it did not leave its route while flying over our airspace. They did not pick up connection with Hungarian air traffic control, so they alerted the Hungarian Air Defense who sent up two Gripen aircraft. The pilots of the 777 made a mistake and forgot to login.

Dragonair to operate flights to Kuala Lumpur from March 2017
Press Release Excerpt
11 Aug 2016

Dragonair today announced that it will operate four daily flights between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur commencing early next year, further strengthening the airline’s regional network.

The new flights will be introduced progressively between March and May 2017. Kuala Lumpur will become Dragonair’s third destination in Malaysia – the airline already operates 11 weekly flights to Penang and five weekly flights to Kota Kinabalu. Together with Kuala Lumpur, Dragonair will be operating 44 weekly flights to Malaysia.

Cathay Pacific will cease its four daily flights to Kuala Lumpur upon the launch of the new Dragonair service. Additionally, five of Cathay Pacific’s Airbus A330 aircraft will be transferred to the Dragonair fleet to support the airline’s operation and growth.

Cathay Pacific releases combined traffic figures for July 2016
Press Release Excerpt
15 Aug 2016

Cathay Pacific Airways today released combined Cathay Pacific and Dragonair traffic figures for July 2016 that show an increase in both the number of passengers carried and the amount of cargo and mail uplifted compared to the same month last year.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried a total of 3,070,815 passengers last month – an increase of 2.9% compared to July 2015. The passenger load factor was flat at 87.0% while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), grew by 2.6%. In the first seven months of 2016, the number of passengers carried rose by 2.7% compared to a 4.0% increase in capacity.

The two airlines carried 158,022 tonnes of cargo and mail in July, an increase of 7.1% compared to the same month last year. The cargo and mail load factor rose by 2.9 percentage points to 64.7%. Capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, rose by 1.2% while cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres (RTKs) increased by 5.8%. In the first seven months of 2016, the tonnage carried rose by 0.8% against a 0.7% increase in capacity and a 1.1% drop in RTKs.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Revenue Management Patricia Hwang said: “July was a busy month for our passenger business as it marked the beginning of the summer peak period, and we saw high passenger loads across the network. The recovery in demand on Korean routes, which dropped significantly last year due to MERS, continued. Demand on routes to Japan, however, softened, reflecting the continuing appreciation of the Japanese yen. Traffic on European routes on the other hand was affected by recent security concerns. Yield remains under intense pressure due to volatile currency markets and strong competition.”

South China Morning Post Excerpt
Cathay Pacific to freeze hiring, watch its budget after 1H net profit missed estimates
First-half net profit slumped by a larger-than-expected 82 per cent
August 17, 2016

Cathay Pacific Airways Co. said it will stop hiring non-essential staff, watch its budget and delay the delivery of new aircraft, after Hong Kong’s flagship carrier missed estimates and reported an 82 per cent slump in first-half net profit. The airline’s shares fell 7.3 per cent after results were announced.

“We are reviewing productivity and expenditure, we have stopped hiring and replacement of non-operationally critical staff, and we are restricting non-essential discretionary spending,” chairman John Solar said in Hong Kong. “In places like our head office in Hong Kong, there is no need to add staff, we have a hiring freeze.”

Cathay will still hire essential crew members for its plan to launch new routes such as the new four-times-weekly service to London’s Gatwick airport, scheduled to begin on September 2.

Net income for the first six months fell to HK$353 million, or 9 HK cents per share, worse than the HK$1.07 billion median forecast of four analysts polled by Bloomberg.

Revenue was hurt by fewer tourist arrivals, cut backs in corporate travel and intense competition from mainland Chinese airlines.

A weak global economy forced many businesses to cut back on their travel budgets and asked their employees to “trade down” from business class to coach, while more tourists preferred to take short trips instead of making long-haul journeys, said Cathay’s chief executive Ivan Chu.

Competition has intensified with mainland Chinese carriers this year, which bolstered their Trans-Pacific capacity by 20 per cent, while Asia-to-Australia routes expanded by as much as 40 per cent. That led to cut-throat competition and fare discounts, which hurt the airline’s profit margin.

To attract travellers, Cathay offered discounts of up to 30 per cent on business class tickets during the peak season of July and August, selling “tens of thousands” of such tickets during the promotion, Chu said.

CX adds frequency to Vancouver, up from 14 to 17 flights a week

from http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/catha...g-kong-flights (that article also has other non-CX-related YVR news)

Quote:
Cathay Pacific boosts frequency of Vancouver to Hong Kong flights

One of Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) most frequent and longest direct international routes is set to become even more frequent.

Cathay Pacific announced today that it will increase its weekly flights from YVR to Hong Kong International Airport from 14 flights – two flights per day – to 17 flights. Altogether, this represents an additional 87,360 seats into YVR.

The frequency increase will begin in April 2017 and utilize the new state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which features high ceilings, wider seats, large windows with auto-mechanical window shades, a new generation entertainment system with large Panasonic screens, and larger overhead baggage bins.

Comparable to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, this will be the first time the new A350-900 will be used on a Canadian route.

The additional flights will be added on select days of the week and it represents a return to the route’s frequencies prior to the 2008 recession. From November 2007 to December 2008, the Hong Kong-based airline operated the YVR route with 17 to 21 weekly flights.

“It’s exciting to be able to grow our operations in Canada,” said Nick Hays, Vice President Canada of Cathay Pacific Airways, in a statement. “As a China and Asia travel specialist, it’s our pleasure to provide more choice, convenience and world-class service to passengers travelling between Vancouver and Hong Kong and beyond to our unrivalled Asia and China network.”

YVR is also directly connected to Hong Kong by Air Canada’s daily non-stop service. With BC’s booming tourism industry and the continued addition of new and improved flight services, the airport is on target to reach a record 21.3 million passengers by the end of the year – one million more than 2016.
