ABU DHABI NATIONAL EXHIBITION CENTRE

The whole project cost 8billion, not just the tower - it sounds like it is a huge project which will really put Abu Dhabi on the map - AT LAST! A brand new exhibition centre, a mimi city, a marina, and the curving tower. Also, the Grandstand isn't being demolished it's being renovated, below is a quote from an ADNEC press release:

Some of the highlights of Capital Centre will be:
  • The Grandstand - a tribute to the past, the historic Grandstand that, for many years, was used by His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the UAE, to view parades and other key celebrations is being integrated into the Capital Centre development;
  • A Micro-city that will house a mix of hotel and residential accommodation as well as office and retail opportunities;
  • The Galleria – a paradise for shoppers, this will be an enclosed multi-storey air conditioned retail space;
  • The Marina - providing scenic opportunities, the future home of super-yachts, marine exhibitions and floating hotels will become one of Abu Dhabi’s most vibrant locations;
  • The Feature Tower – futuristic and gravity defying, the tower will be one of the key visual icons of Capital Centre.

I have a few more images if people are interested in seeing them, here they are

Glazing work nears completion at Abu Dhabi's state-of-the-art Exhibition Centre

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has announced that glazing work is nearing completion on Phase 1 of its state-of-the-art exhibition and conference centre currently under construction in the UAE capital.

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company.

Work on the new Exhibition Centre began in December 2005 with the deadline for the first phase of construction being February 2007. The completion of glazing work will mark a major milestone in the progress of the iconic project and signify that construction of phase one of the venue is entering its final stages.

The glazing project involves using 3,400 square metres of specially-designed angled reflective glass to build an enormous concourse, which upon completion of the entire centre, will be one of the largest air-conditioned exhibition concourses in the World at 18,000sqm. The angled reflective glass will help to maximise the use of natural light and keep heat out of the venue, creating a vibrant and comfortable atmosphere for visitors. The use of such a large amount of glass will also ensure that the Exhibition Centre is one of the most visually exciting buildings in Abu Dhabi.

Simon Horgan, Chief Executive Officer, ADNEC said: 'It is our intention to provide a visitor experience that has not been witnessed by the UAE exhibitions industry before. The glazing, as with every single aspect of the building, has been designed with visitors, exhibitors and organisers in mind. Innovation and usability have been of great importance to us throughout the process and I look forward to early next year when visitors can begin to experience this incredible venue for themselves.'

In addition to the 18,000 square metres concourse, on completion the entire Exhibition Centre will offer 55,000 square metres of inter-connecting hall space; 8,000 square metres of high specification multi-purpose hall space for conferences and events; and dedicated conference and banqueting areas for 1200 delegates. As part of the development, the historic Grandstand that was used by His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the UAE, to view parades and other national celebrations is being integrated into the exhibition centre.

Located in the heart of the new Capital Centre district, the Exhibition Centre will serve as a prestigious venue for the Middle East's Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry, offering comprehensive facilities to visitors, exhibitors and organisers all at a single location.

Second phase of construction begins on the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre

Construction work has recently commenced on Phase 2 of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in the UAE's Capital City.

Development work on Phase 2 of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

The AED 580 million (USD 158 million) project will see the venue double in size to become the Middle East's largest purpose-built exhibition centre, with inter-connected exhibition floor space totalling more than 55,000 square metres.

The Exhibition Centre's distinctive U-shape design will be achieved by constructing five additional exhibition halls, a multi-purpose hall with seating for more than 5,000 people, 15 meeting rooms and two multi-storey car parks with space for more than 8,000 vehicles. Also incorporated in the design is an expansion of the Visitor Concourse, which will grow to 18,000 square metres to become the largest air-conditioned exhibition concourse in the world.

More than 5,000 skilled workmen have been employed in a concentrated construction program for the expansion, which has been scheduled for completion in Autumn 2008.

Simon Horgan, CEO, ADNEC said, 'The commencement of Phase 2 of the build is an important milestone in the short history of ADNEC. Phase 1 provided Abu Dhabi with the most modern and flexible exhibition and conference venue in the world, the completion of Phase 2 next year will provide the city with one of the largest.'

Phase 1 of ADNEC was opened in February by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The venue has already hosted 10 major international exhibitions, welcoming more than 250,000 visitors from more than 100 countries.

The influx of exhibitions new exhibitions being held at ADNEC is encouraging the growth of the exhibition industry in the UAE and is developing Abu Dhabi into a Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions hub of the region. It is predicted that by 2008, ADNEC will welcome more than one million visitors a year and will grow the exhibition industry in the UAE by more than 25 per cent.

'We are not only seeing brand new events such as MECOM and the Interiors Show coming to Abu Dhabi because of the new exhibition facilities, we are seeing the general expansion of well established shows such as IDEX and ADIPEC because they have now been given a platform to grow and develop,' Horgan concluded.

The difference between the projects being constructed in abu dhabi from that of dubai is that theirs have a higher aesthetic value. abu dhabi projects may not be the tallest, or largest, or biggest, or whatever record-breaking standards dubai has been doing, but definitely, the capital's creations are mostly 'work of art' and truly majestic.

There's seems a bit of confusion about this; these are the facts as I understand them.
1. ADNEC is the exhibition centre not the towers; and despite what Flares says it is completely new - the old one is being demolished soon.
2. When the next stage of the exhibition centre opens it will be the biggest in the middle east - bigger than dubai!
2. The Towers - and there are 23 of them apparently, not 30, are part of the entire development which is called Capital Centre.
3. Apparently Capital Centre is also going to have a Marina and the Feature Tower - which is the funky looking one I suppose.

I think what they're trying to do is create a new area which is self contained and built around the exhibition centre. I've lived in AD for a few years and I think that this development is one of the most exciting

There was an update in the Gulf News this morning:

Capital Centre to be completed in 2011
Staff Report

Dubai: Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec) yesterday announced that construction has started on the Dh8 billion Capital Centre development in Abu Dhabi.

Capital Centre is a business and residential micro-city, which is set to become the world's first fully networked exhibition and lifestyle destination.

In a statement, Adnec said, "The project is the largest development on the main island of Abu Dhabi and is being developed around the new Adnec complex in a move to meet the increasing demand for commercial and residential facilities being generated by the successful exhibition centre."

On completion in early 2011, Capital Centre will house a new micro-city of 23 towers, including six branded hotels, four commercial buildings, eight residential and serviced apartment complexes and 5 mixed use developments.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also featured in Capital Centre will be a 2.3 kilometre waterfront Marina Zone; a proposed monorail and the 'Galleria' - a shopping mall with restaurants, retail outlets, and cinemas.

Feature Tower

The most distinctive feature of the development will be the iconic 35-storey Feature Tower that will include a 200-room five-star-plus hotel and 20,000 square metres of office and retail space. The Feature Tower, which has been widely praised for its architectural ingenuity, will rise from the ground in an iconic, curving form.

The 23 towers that form the Capital Centre micro-city will be located on the land currently occupied by Abu Dhabi's old exhibition venue, which is scheduled for demolition soon.

The last-ever event was staged at the old venue in January 2007 and Adnec employees have recently vacated the building to move to new state-of-the-art offices, located in the historic Grandstand that has been fully refurbished and integrated into the new Adnec.

Three bridges will connect Capital Centre to its Marina Zone, which will be specially equipped to house super-yachts and marine exhibitions.

Marina Zone

The Marina Zone will also encompass retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment facilities.

Simon Horgan, chief executive of Adnec, said, "Capital Centre is not just one of Abu Dhabi's most prestigious developments, it is one of the Middle East's most significant economic development projects. The site will become a new landmark of the UAE.

Work starts on Abu Dhabi Capital Centre

Construction has begun on Abu Dhabi’s AED8 billion ($2.18 billion) Capital Centre development, Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) said on Wednesday.

The project is one of the largest development on the main island of Abu Dhabi and is being built around the new Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, located near the airport, to meet demand for commercial and residential facilities.

On completion in early 2011, Capital Centre will house a ‘micro-city’ of 23 towers, including six branded hotels, four commercial buildings, eight residential and serviced apartment complexes and five mixed-use developments.

Also featured in Capital Centre will be a 2.3 kilometre waterfront ‘Marina Zone’, a proposed monorail and a shopping mall featuring restaurants, retail outlets, and cinemas.

The most distinctive feature of the development will be the 35-storey Feature Tower, which will include a 200 room five-star hotel and 20,000 square metres of office and retail space.

The 23 towers that form the Capital Centre Micro-City will be located on the land currently occupied by Abu Dhabi's old exhibition venue, which is scheduled for demolition.

“Capital Centre will have a huge economic impact on Abu Dhabi. The development will directly support business, trade and investment, in addition to stimulating events which themselves encourage the tourism and hospitality sector,” said Simon Horgan, ADNEC chief executive.

ADNEC work continues

Found this online

To commemorate the latest stage of construction on the Phase 2 development of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company has buried a time capsule in the foundations of the building.

The time capsulate, which has been named ‘a moment in time’, contains a series of artefacts that give an insight into daily life in Abu Dhabi in 2007. Included in the time capsule is a book on H.H Sheikh Zayed, the late president of the UAE; two newspapers published on the day of the concrete pour; a pack of information about Abu Dhabi; an ADNEC brochure; an Abu Dhabi baseball cap; a bag of Arabic incense; a child’s drawing of Abu Dhabi in 2007; and a letter from ADNEC to be read by whoever opens the time capsule in the future.

Phase 2 of ADNEC will see the venue double in size to become the Middle East's largest purpose-built exhibition centre with inter-connected exhibition floor space totalling more than 55,000 square metres. The exhibition centre's distinctive U-shape design will be achieved by constructing 5 additional exhibition halls, a multi-purpose hall with seating for more than 5,000 people, 15 meeting rooms and two multi-storey car parks with space for more than 8,000 vehicles. The project is scheduled for completion in autumn 2008.
