PRESS RELEASE
Tuesday 26th May 2009

Capital Gate reaches 100m height

Floors 17 and 18 to house gigantic suspended Atrium

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has announced that it has achieved one of the most significant milestones in the construction of the iconic Capital Gate, adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. A gigantic internal Atrium, including swimming pool and ‘tea lounge’ has been suspended on the 17th and 18th floors, the halfway point of the 35 storey, 160 metre high tower. The tower now stands approximately 100m high with the central core at level 22 and the external diagrid at level 18.

When complete Capital Gate will lean an astonishing 18 degrees westward, 14 degrees more than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. By installing a huge number of steel struts, engineers have realised ADNEC’s and project architect’s (RMJM) vision of the Atrium - creating a cantilevered “tea lounge” and swimming pool suspended 80 metres above the ground at level 18.

Because of its unique posture, the 35 storey Capital Gate is being constructed on top of a 2m deep concrete raft with an incredibly dense mesh of reinforced steel. The extraordinary steel exoskeleton known as the “diagrid” sits above an extensive distribution of 490 piles that have been drilled 30 metres underground to accommodate the gravitational, wind and seismic pressures. The design of the central core, which slants in opposite direction to the lean of the building, straightening as it grows, has never been attempted before.

Commenting on Capital Gate’s progress, Simon Horgan, ADNEC Group CEO, said: “When complete Capital Gate will be a modern day icon for Abu Dhabi, recognisable throughout the world. Capital Gate is not about being the biggest or the tallest, it is about advanced technical ingenuity and aesthetic splendour. This is one of the most challenging buildings under construction in the world at the moment but due to the partnership between ADNEC, RMJM and all contractors on the project, ground breaking solutions are being designed on a daily basis.”

Tony Archibold, RMJM Project Director, added: “Passing the half-way point in development is a great success and we are now entering a critical period in Capital Gate’s development. While we are facing some of our toughest architectural challenges, it is also the beginning of the most exciting stage; where this unique structure begins to take shape.”

Capital Gate will house Abu Dhabi’s first Hyatt hotel – Hyatt at Capital Centre, a presidential style luxury 5 star hotel which will provide 200 hotel rooms for Abu Dhabi and will serve ADNEC’s visitors and exhibitors as well as international business and leisure travellers.

Twist and Shout!

From The National
http://www.thenational.ae/article/20...707109978/1284

Spiralling out of the ground on one of the main roads into the capital, a new tower aims to be the iconic structure of Abu Dhabi. Helena Frith Powell takes a tour of the rapidly rising building

Every major city has a landmark building, instantly recognisable: in Paris, it’s the Eiffel Tower; in London, the Houses of Parliament; New York has the Empire State Building; Dubai, the Burj Dubai. As yet, Abu Dhabi has no iconic structure, but the Capital Gate Tower taking shape by the Adnec Centre is its strongest contender so far. It will be tall, gleaming, irresistibly shaped and leaning at a seemingly dangerous angle – a Leaning Tower of Pisa for the 21st century.

Though Robin Gibson, the project director with RMJM, the tower’s architects and engineers, and his colleague Irfan Ahmed, the senior structural engineer, talk admiringly about their “baby”, the building has not got to where it is today (18 floors with 17 to go) without its challenges. The design is based on its surroundings: the sea, the sand and the way the wind plays upon them. The building rises out of the earth, twisting and turning as it goes, and then inclining at an 18 degree angle. A splash runs up one side of it, imitating the movement of a wave. The incline of 30 metres is 14 degrees greater than Pisa’s tower.

I was told from a involved friend that a tunnel in Khaleej Al-Arabi road is being considered, infront of "Capital Gate" tower and grandstand. would give area for a better landscaping for the iconic tower. Sorry I dont have a link, its still in the consideration phase.

PRESS RELEASE
9 August 2009

ADNEC’s Aloft Hotel will be capital’s second largest Hotel set to bring new concept in hotels to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has revealed that upon full completion, the Aloft Hotel, the first of its on-site hotels to open, will provide the UAE capital with 408 additional hotel rooms, making it the second largest hotel in Abu Dhabi, in terms of capacity.
The Aloft Hotel will be operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and will be linked directly to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, next to the Capital Centre district. It will bring a brand new lifestyle concept in hotels to the capital, targeting the niche market of today’s forward thinking business travellers by offering a quality, designer product which is affordable with a focus on accessible technology, comfort and convenience.
Simon Horgan, ADNEC Group CEO said, “For an exhibition development to be successful it must have accommodation on site which suits all aspects of its audience from luxury to value. The high demand and relatively low supply of hotel accommodation in Abu Dhabi is a concern for our international exhibitors and visitors and so I am delighted that the first hotel to open at ADNEC will be the city’s second largest and one of its most competitively priced.”
Stephan Vanden Auweele, Aloft Hotel General Manager added: “Aloft is the world’s fastest growing hotel brand. It has re-invented the industry by ignoring certain aspects of hotels which have become clichéd and old fashioned in the minds of our target audience. For example, free wireless internet is very important to our customers, but room service and silver service tea lobbies are not. We provide what our customers want and don’t concern ourselves with things that they don’t; this approach reduces our costs and allows us to provide the customer with a lower price per room.”
The Aloft Hotel will be located 20 minutes away from downtown Abu Dhabi and 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport. It will serve the ADNEC visitors and exhibitors but is also anticipated to become a regular destination for young affluent residents of Abu Dhabi searching for new and stylish outlets.

PRESS RELEASE

Aloft and Hyatt at Capital Centre to help ADNEC establish the world’s first exhibition lifestyle destination

As construction around the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) continues at pace on the 408 room Aloft hotel and the iconic Capital Gate, which will house the landmark Hyatt at Capital Centre hotel, ADNEC has revealed how the two hotels together will offer the complete hospitality product for its visitors and exhibitors.

When it is fully open, the Aloft Hotel will have one of the largest hotel capacities in the UAE Capital with 408 rooms, and it will target primarily young business travellers by offering a stylish and contemporary product to its guests. Hyatt at Capital Centre, a 189-room hotel, has been developed specifically for the Capital Centre development and will welcome travellers accustomed to high levels of service, design and innovation. Soaring at 160 metres above the ground, this gravity-defying building leans a staggering 18 degrees and is set to become a world-famous landmark for Abu Dhabi city. The architectural feats that define this project are combined with elegant interior design concepts to create a refined hotel guest experience.

Simon Horgan, ADNEC Group CEO, said: “We are creating the world’s first fully connected exhibition lifestyle destination and it is absolutely critical which hotels are located on-site. In Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and Hyatt Hotels & Resorts we have chosen two of the industry-leading companies to help drive this vision forward. Although targeting very different markets, both companies are bringing very high quality products and service to Abu Dhabi, which will reinforce ADNEC’s position as the region’s leading exhibition centre and greatly add to the hotel portfolio of the city.”

Aloft will capitalise on growing worldwide recognition as one of the industry’s most compelling lifestyle brands targeting the niche of forward thinking individuals. The new Hyatt at Capital Centre will add authenticity, style and luxury to the region while enabling all guests, whether travelling for business or leisure, to unwind and gather in celebration feeling productive and revitalised.
Stephan Vanden Auweele, Aloft Hotel General Manager said: “The Aloft Hotel will be something new for Abu Dhabi. We don’t classify ourselves as 5, 4 or 3 star hotel because conventional hotel grade systems do not fit the Aloft concept. We have the ultimate product in terms of technology and convenience and we offer a distinctive and unique experience. Aloft is not about a specific age-group, or nationality, or category, rather it is about a certain lifestyle.”
Commenting on the forthcoming arrival of Hyatt at Capital Centre, Thierry Bertin, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, International Operations, said: “Hyatt at Capital Centre is set to become a landmark hotel on the Abu Dhabi skyline and a leading hotel in the region. It will showcase exceptional design and offer memorable experiences to Abu Dhabi’s visitors all while providing our guests sweeping panoramas of the capital through its location within the iconic Capital Gate building.”
The Aloft and the Hyatt at Capital Centre are directly linked to the exhibition centre and will be 20 minutes away from Downtown Abu Dhabi and 15 minutes from the Abu Dhabi International Airport. Although they will serve mainly ADNEC visitors and exhibitors, they are also expected to become a regular destination for the residents of Abu Dhabi.

Capital Gate makes it to the top | Solar Panels power Aloft Hotel

Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi’s iconic leaning tower, has topped out its central core and reached its final height of 160 metres, marking one of the most significant milestones in its construction. Capital Gate leans an incredible 18 degrees (14 degrees more than the famous leaning tower of Pisa). It is being developed by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) and has been designed by global architects RMJM. The tower forms the focal point of the Capital Centre development, an AED8 billion business and residential micro city being constructed around the thriving Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

SOLAR PANELS TO SUPPLY HOT WATER FOR ALOFT HOTEL

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has revealed that more than 90% of the hot water at its 408 bedroom Aloft Hotel will be supplied through energy harnessed from solar panels.

Aloft Hotel will become the first hotel in Abu Dhabi to make such use of solar energy when it is launched on October 25th.

560 solar panels, covering a total area of 2,300 square metres have been installed on the roof of ADNEC Car Park A. These panels heat water for the hotel's 408 bedrooms, 2 production kitchens, food & beverage outlets, hotel offices and the swimming pool saving an estimated 870 mega watt hours of electricity every year by making use of the infra-red component of sun light to generate energy. The solar panels were manufactured in Germany by WOLF GmbH, a renowned leader in the solar power sector.

Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi by RMJM

[FIRST LOOK] Abu Dhabi’s own leaning tower, Capital Gate, has topped out its central core at its final height of 160 metres

Leaning at 18 degrees, 14 degrees more than the leaning tower of Pisa, Capital Gate will house Abu Dhabi’s first Hyatt hotel with 189 rooms, office space and a cantilevered teahouse.

The tower is being constructed on a concrete raft and comprises a complex steel diagrid, which in turn sits on a distribution of 490 piles drilled 30m underground.

Capital Gate is the focal tower of the Capital City development a £1.3 billion business and residential ‘micro city’.
