World's Tallest Skyscraper in Bahrain???

Hi, well I found this today in the paper, am not sure if it'll go ahead but it sounds huge(1000+, 600m, etc.). As much as I doubt this one will go ahead, but if it does, I bet you, Dubai will announce a bigger one soon after that .

http://gulf-daily-news.com/story.asp...&IssueID=29044

MANAMA: Bahrain could become home of the world's tallest skyscraper if a project by Danish company Henning Larsens Tegnestue A/S gets the go-ahead. Company project director Louis Becker, who was in Riyadh yesterday, is planning to have a meeting about the proposed project with a building contractor in Bahrain later this week. The company's design for a skyscraper measures 1,022 metres - double the Taiwan Taipei 101, which is currently the world's tallest building at 506 metres.

It was chosen by the Bahrain contractor because of the company's previous experiences of building in Saudi Arabia, according to a report in the Copenhagen Post.

The company designed both the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1984 and the Royal Danish Embassy in 1987, in Riyadh.

The project is awaiting approval from His Majesty King Hamad and is expected to be formally announced on May 7, said the report. Mr Becker has reportedly been working on plans for the project for a year.

The project, which would take about seven-and-a-half years to build, would comprise five towers - modelled after the five pillars of Islam. The tallest would reach 1,022m, have 200 storeys and house 30,000 people.

The second tallest would measure 600m.

Opera architect to build world's tallest building
02.05.2006 Print article (IE & NS 4+)

From the Copenhagen Post English Danish NewsPaper

Up, up and away. Danish architect pens plans for the world's tallest skyscraper in the Middle East

Henning Larsens Tegnestue A/S is predicted to build the world's tallest skyscraper at a height of 1022m.

The Danish architect firm's drafts have been chosen by a building contractor in Bahrain. The Danish firm is just waiting for approval from the king.

Louis Becker, director responsible for the project, insisted that the firm is very close to securing the deal.

This would not be the first time Larsen, well known for designing Copenhagen's new opera house, would be building in the Middle East. The architect is also responsible for designing both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1984) and the Royal Danish Embassy (1987) in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

Becker is scheduled to visit the small country situated in the Persian Gulf on 2 May.

According to public service broadcaster DR, the purpose of visit is to iron out final details.

The project is expected to be formally announced on 7 May.

Henning Larsens Tegnestue has been working on the plans for the project over the course of the previous year. If the project is realised after the approximately seven and a half years it would take, it will be a 'gigantic project for the firm', Becker told DR.

The project entails five towers, where the tallest would reach 1022m and have 200 stories. The building would house 30,000 people and would require an enormous elevator system. The second tallest tower would measure around 600m.

The five tower design is modelled after the five pillars of Islam. Louis Becker said the aim was not just to make an economic manifestation for Bahrain, but also a cultural one. That is why it is important that the sky-scraper project is local and Arabic focused, rather than American or European.

It was the building contractor's idea to build big, not Henning Larsens Tegnestue.

Henning Larsens Tegnestue was chosen because of Larsen's previous experiences with building in Saudi Arabia.

Although the tallest of the five towers will be almost twice as high as the world's tallest building, to date (Taiwan Taipei 101, 509m, built in 2004), there are already plans for a taller skyscraper on the way. 'The Mile', is the expected to be 1.6 km tall.

This isn't even fun anymore.

The "WTB" title once upon a time used to be fun.

It is clear that we have entered a new chapter in the history of the skyscraper. It's also interesting to notice that everybody thought that south-east Asia would become the home of the tallest buildings ten years ago. Almost no one would have thought that a few countries in the Middle-East would join the club. It's getting more and more exciting every day.

It's not everyday I go , but this... It's the third proposal to break the magic barrier! The more the merrier, I say. I just wish it was any chance of any western cities getting back in the race.

I know the half-life for these projects is quite short, but the more proposals we've got going, the more chance of at least one of them getting built.

Geeeh people, just read the Post No. 9.

It clearly says that this was a competion entry but the winner was a project from Australian architect Woods Bagot.

So to close this matter: This was a proposal but it is CONFIRMED now that it will NEVER BE BUILD in Bahrain.

Seems like another entry for an architecture competition. It's a pity because especially for middle eastern cities, loads of proposals end up like this. Also the best ones are these types, that are just designed for a competition and for nothing else
