City status for Alor Star from Dec 21

ALOR STAR: Alor Star will be declared a city on Dec 21 in a ceremony starting at 8pm at Dataran Tunku here.

The proclamation will be made by the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

The programme for the ceremony includes a choir performance, float procession, cultural performance and a fireworks display.

A state government official said guests would include former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting will also attend the event.

The mayor will be appointed the next day at the Balai Besar here.

On Nov 28, Ong is scheduled to hand over the declaration scroll to Sultan Abdul Halim at the Audience Hall in Istana Anak Bukit.

Mmmm...this is rather interesting. I thought that Kuah is rather more important and bigger than Alor Star.

Can someone tell me the criteria used in determine the status of a city in Malaysia

Whole langkawi has only 60,000 ppl.

I'm not sure how they determine the city status. Anyway, I can't wait for Miri to become a city. It recently exceeded Sibu in terms of population.

Criteria for a city :

population : >100,000
total anual income : > RM 20 million
strong financial institution
business & industrial centre

but,
Why Penang ,the 2nd largest city in Malaysia is not declared as a city ??
can somebody tell me ?

Its a loooonnnnngggg story!

The main reason is that Penang isn't governed by a Majlis Bandaraya but by a Majlis Perbandaran............a lot of Penangites were protesting about this a few years back during the time when Shah Alam was made a city.

I explained the reasons in of of the previous threads.....forgot where is that thread liao.......wait......

Well.....I am not too sure why but Dewan Bandaraya (City Hall) is only for KL it seems......

The rest like Ipoh, Melaka, KK, Shah Alam, Johor Bahru, Kuching Noth & South are all governed by Majlis Bandaraya (City Council).

Actually another town which is eligible for a city is Petaling Jaya but they aren't recognised as well.

Mmmm..strong financial instution + business and industrial. I seriously don't think Alor Star belong into that category. No offend to Kedah people here.

I totally agree with you all... but what to do... we are not goverment.... they can do whatever they like... simply declare one town as city... while those city declared as a town...

As long as we know we are city... I think that does not matter...

Anyway, Penang has been declared as a city under English Government... we have been a city for a long time...

Just hope that Abdullah will declare!!!

Besides KL,Kuching and Kota Kinabalu are governed by City Hall

Kuching : Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara ( DBKU)
& Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan ( MBKS)

KK : Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu ( DBKK )

since Penang didn't get city status when it should, Penang should get metropolis status without going through city status. wah break world record!!
