Of course the owner/operator would get stung heavily if they can't conclusively prove that their ticket machine was working properly at the time of the 'offence' so it's a risk that they will have to take as well. Personally I would most certainly ignore this altogether, (especially) as the car wasn't in the driver's name at the time of the 'incident'.

I've always had my doubts about advice just to ignore the ticket (or whatever you want to call it). Surely if they are effectively legally unenforceable, any similar "pay and display" car park charges are similarly so as there is no recourse to force anyone to pay.

Surely there is always a risk to your credit record as well?

Another thought is that the burden of proof in a civil case is "on the balance of probabilities" rather than "beyond reasonable doubt". Couldn't this be significant if you claim the machine (I think there are at least 2) wasn’t working as your defence?

If they can show a ticket issued from either machine just before or just after the time in question, then arguably, on the balance of probabilities a machine was working.

That said, if you are in the right I don’t doubt they will drop the issue rather than trying to fight it in court. Even in marginal cases there is a risk the judge will award a token £1 damages and then make the parking firm pay costs.

Perhaps my conclusion is that you shouldn't take any "legal advice" (including this post) you read on an Internet forum as being definitive.

Great to stuff to hear about....

KIDS FROM ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL VISIT MEDIACITYUK IN CHOLMONDELEY PAGEANT OF POWER CARS

The Cholmondeley Pageant of Power (15-17 June 2012, www.cpop.co.uk), the UK’s biggest celebration of power and speed over land, air and water, has chosen to support Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Remount as its two partner charities for the 2012 event. By having a presence at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, each charity expects to raise more than £20,000 for their worthwhile causes.

To celebrate, the Pageant of Power is hitting the road and taking a selection of kids from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital on a drive to MediaCityUK and then on to Cholmondeley Castle (the venue for the Pageant of Power). The kids will be riding is some of the Pageant’s most exciting and thrilling cars including a Cobra 289, a McLaren MP4-12C and a Jaguar J220, as well as some iconic Bentleys, Supermoto bikes and military jeeps.

James Hall, Event Director for the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, said: “Being able to share some of the action and excitement of the Pageant with the children from Alder Hey is really special. The work that goes on there, and at The Remount Charity, is inspiring and we believe that the Pageant of Power will provide an ideal opportunity to raise money for these two worthwhile causes. Last year the visitors to the Pageant were wonderfully generous, but with the event being even bigger and better this year, we hope that we can do even more to help.”

On the 14th June from 9am until 4pm, the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power will be returning to MediaCityUK with some of its most spectacular cars including the aero-engined BMW ‘Brutus’ that appeared on Top Gear, the 24-litre Napier-Bentley and the fearsome 42-litre Packard-Bentley – all of which blast fire from their exhausts. These cars will be neatly contrasted with some of the planet’s greenest cars including Renault Twizzy, Vauxhall Ampera, Nissan Leaf and the Tesla*.

In both instances, the cars will be parked on MediaCityUK Piazza and the public is invited to come along and see (and hear!) the cars in action. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions and also find out details on the very latest environmentally friendly cars that are due to hit the productions lines in the coming years. After leaving MediaCityUK, the cars will travel the short distance to Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire.

At the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, both charities will have a strong presence using it as an opportunity to collect donations, raise awareness and sell charity merchandise. In addition they will each be pulling on their celebrity supporters to make the day memorable and to maximise their prospects.

Chris Done, Head of Fundraising from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, adds: “We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of this amazing event and it’s great that those children who aren’t well enough to attend the pageant can get a taste of what will be on offer there. We are incredibly grateful to the Pageant organisers and the owners of these wonderful vehicles for taking the time to visit the hospital and for their fantastic support.”

Alder Hey Children's Hospital is Europe’s busiest children’s hospital providing care for around 300,000 children and young people each year. The Remount charity was set up in 2007 by former soldier Neville Barton who recognized that Armed Forces personnel needed help returning to civilian life.

Now in its fifth year, the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power is now regarded as the region’s most interactive day out. This year it has been announced that there will be a new Top Gear Supercar Challenge, a celebration of 50 years of Bond, a powerful display of aero-engined cars as well as an Anglo-American sports car display entitled ‘Cobras at the Castle’. This is in addition to the powerboats on the mere, overhead aerial displays, quad bikes, go karts, mini tanks, assault course, archery and laser clays. To buy tickets or find further information, visit www.cpop.co.uk.

I fancy this(and I could bring a lot of foreign visitors, in an attempt to impress them with Manchester) but having checked the website it refers to 'local residents'. FFS

Is this for real? I hope not but given the 'local things for local people' mentality that pervades this part of the world, I wouldn't be surprised (check out the 'I haven't heard many local accents in the NQ' comment in another thread for evidence)

Tell me that strangers 'from not round these parts' would also be welcome to visit. Please.

I think there’s as good a chance as any Salford is harbouring extremists with an agenda against the BBC as anywhere else.

Landmark Digital and Media College to Open at MediaCityUK
29/05/2012

The Department for Education announced on Tuesday that they will be supporting the development of a new University Technical College at MediaCityUK, Salford Quays. This landmark UTC will work directly with some of the most prestigious names in the digital and media industry to revolutionise the way young people develop crucial skills and pathways to jobs.

The MediaCityUK UTC is amongst 15 new UTCs that will be developed across the country – all specialising in different areas. The University Technical College is a new concept in education offering 14 to 19 year olds the opportunity to take a highly-regarded, full time, technically-orientated course of study. They are equipped to the highest standard, sponsored by a University and offer clear progression routes into higher education or further learning in work including apprenticeships.

The MediaCityUK UTC has come about through a comprehensive network of partners across education and industry – led by The Aldridge Foundation, The University of Salford, Salford City College and The Lowry. The UTC will specialise in creative and digital industries as well as developing an entrepreneurial mindset amongst students. One of the key things that will make the UTC model special is the direct link with industry, giving students the change to work with partners in MediaCityUK. Partners on the project include BBC, ITV and Adobe Systems Inc. Sir Rod Aldridge OBE, Chairman of The Aldridge Foundation said:

“The MediaCityUK UTC will provide outstanding opportunities for young people to develop skills in the Creative Industries, an area of huge opportunity in our region. It will also allow employers to influence and shape education delivery to ensure that there is a developing talent pool in the region with the skills and aptitudes that the sector needs.”

The MediaCityUK UTC will become part of the £650m MediaCityUK development on Salford Quays, which has seen some of the biggest names in media, including the BBC, arrived in the area. The Lowry was one of the first regeneration projects on Salford Quays and it has seen the area develop into one of the most vibrant cultural and media destinations in the world. Its Chief Executive, Julia Fawcett OBE, believes that that the developments in the area provide the perfect springboard to create a new generation of creative professionals in Salford. She said:

"MediaCityUK UTC will be fundamental to inspiring local young people and enabling new creative and digital industries to flourish in the region. The UTC will ensure students can connect to the opportunities growth brings - linking these new industries to the local community. It will provide outstanding opportunities for young people from the Greater Manchester area to become highly successful creative industries entrepreneurs in the MediaCityUK hub and beyond, helping to drive the UK’s future economic prosperity.”

The MediaCityUK UTC Curriculum will be developed to respond to employer demand, drawing from the skills of partners across the area. It will provide a new opportunity for young people from Salford and the wider North West area, with intake growing over the course of the next eight years to take 720 students by 2020. The UTC has been sponsored by the University of Salford and its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Martin Hall, believe this model is a significant development in generating skills for the industry. He said:

"The University believes that the employer led model proposed for a UTC at MediaCityUK will significantly enhance the pool of talent needed to support the rapid growth of this industry throughout the region and beyond."

Also partnering on the project are Salford City College, and their Principal and Chief Executive, Martin Sim, is also incredibly positive about the potential of the MediaCityUK UTC development. He said:

"The UTC will offer exciting and outstanding learning opportunities for Salford young people to develop their skills and obtain the qualifications they need in order to be considered for job opportunities being created in the creative and media field."

This will go towards creating the real legacy and long term sustainability of media city; essentially having it's own youth development system and with a platform that means the city region can retain the talent that it has created.

Probably not long would fit nicely with the overall sector.

I wonder if they could secure some warehouse units in Trafford Park or on Broadway and turn them into recording/TV studios?

Would make for a nice "StudioCity"

A warehouse isn't a 'studio'. It's a visually controlled shed. Studios cost money. That's why there are so few around.

If anyone has a chance to look at todays Sun (I know, I found it free on the train honest!) there was the usual piece complaining about the BBC and its move to Salford. The best part, and I know they still like to show it half built, was that they used a picture of the Lowry Centre and various buildings on that side, when surely they must have noticed the huge BBC signs on the building behind them?!

Fantastic shots by the way Wingtips!

as an edit, here is said article, scroll about 3/4s of the way down
