It's not appropriate to associate the tower with Musashi. Not totally incorrect, either, though.

The area east of Sumida River belonged to Shimousa from sometime in the 7th century, when the province system started, to 1683, when the border between Shimousa and Musashi moved eastward due to the Tone River improvement project. The province system went out of use 1880's, so that means the site of the tower was in Shimousa for a millennium, while it was in Musashi only for two centuries.

I hate the name Sky Tree, too, but I can't come up with a good idea. Sumida Tower sounds lower ranked than Tokyo Tower simply because Sumida belongs to Tokyo. New Tokyo Tower is just too bland. The candidates officially given last year are out of discussion.

The official website has now been updated with the new height of 634 meter, although not yet in the English section.

And it also updated the current height:

174 meter

That's 460 meters still to go.

I don't like the design. It is tall alright, but because it is also fat, it doesn't look tall. It looks like a huge, bulky doric column.

Be patient ! I know that the japaneese are working too slowly for the moment, but in 30days , when the tower will reach "The 300M", you will see how high it can appear !

I didn't finish the article, but I don't think anybody wants to name the tower "Musashi Tower". They just chose the height as 634 m, which is easy to remember, because it works out to "Mu-sa-shi" via goroawase.

I suppose that the height increase would be in the pinnacle. Anyone can confirm? Hoping there are renders update.

It is after all built in Sumida City, probably I will never be bothered to visit. I don't understand why they are building it in that remote place where the people would normally never likely to visit. Should have been built in Saitama. They were the most probable candidate. A lot of the North Korean shrines are in it also.

Tokyo Sky Tree stretching higher

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN

2009/10/17

The Tokyo Sky Tree tower, under construction in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, will stand 634 meters tall--24 meters taller than originally planned--when it opens in 2012, making it the world's tallest broadcasting transmission tower, its operating company said Friday.

Officials at Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co. said the extra height will be created by extending the antenna portion that starts 514 meters above the ground. The change will not affect the tower's structure, nor will it entail additional cost, they said.

Kinya Miyasugi, president of the operating company, said the decision to add height came after the company learned that another tower being built in Guangzhou, China, will be about 610 meters tall.(IHT/Asahi: October 17,2009)
