Any one of the three cranes present here can dismantle the other ones. The last remaining one dismantles itself up to a point. The rest of it will be removed by a smaller crane that is put together of parts that can fit in the internal elevator.

Still loving the picture updates here, I can't wait to see it up close to get a sense of scale of this beauty!

New February target: 300m

They are still above the target, but with just 20 meter for February we could see a bit of a slow down before the first observatory. From about 300 m and up the core will change and will become a bit more solid and will be completely round. As seen on this (a tiny bit to dark) close-up picture I took from the drawing on the 2010 official Tokyo Sky Tree calendar (January/February page).

Three houses burned down and two people injured. No mention of their seriousness, but they doesn't seem serious, because no other media than Sankei reported the fire.

Winter is the season when Tokyo is most prone to fires. The dry winter monsoon keeps the humidity here relatively low.

You're right: Tokyo is remarkably smog-free for its size. When I visit the folks in Melbourne I'm always amazed by the huge brown cloud over the city, even though the metro population is about 10% of Tokyo's.

Sorry, that was off-topic. Back to the Skytree...

Anyone want to reguess how high it will be in May? The last time I asked people said a little over 300m, but at this speed it could be 450m

Judging by the diagram that was posted it looks like there will be four levels that are much shorter than the ones below them right underneath the first observatory. If I'm not mistaken (although I often am) it appears like that will be the next level above where they're building now. Then it's going to become very interesting to watch because there appear to be some very long sections that will fan outwards to shape the observation tower. Thanks again to Momo for posting that diagram and photos so we can determine where we are in terms of construction progress.

Do you think...

...the cranes are above 300m already?

Great tower, amazing speed. I wouldn't expect anything else from the Japanese.

Half way up is at 317 metres. Getting close to half way up and it is already stunning.
