Current 338 meters plus Landmark tower´s 296 meters = 634m.

Incredible that there is still one landmark tower way to go...!

Sky Tree now tallest structure in Japan

Kyodo News | Tuesday, March 30, 2010

What's the limit?: Tokyo Sky Tree in Sumida Ward, at 338 meters tall and growing, on Monday became the tallest structure in the country. KYODO PHOTO

Tokyo Sky Tree, a new tower under construction for terrestrial digital broadcasting, reached 338 meters Monday, surpassing Tokyo Tower and becoming the tallest structure in Japan.

The new tower in Sumida Ward will be 634 meters tall when it is completed at the end of 2011. Tokyo Tower, a 333-meter radio and TV transmission tower in Minato Ward, was the country's tallest structure for 52 years.

Even though Tokyo Sky Tree will not open to the public until spring 2012, it has already become a tourist attraction.

About 100 people were on hand Monday to witness the moment it overtook Tokyo Tower and applauded when a sign showing its height was updated to 338 meters, following the installation of an elevator section at the tip of the new tower at around 10 a.m.

"We are relieved that Sky Tree has become the tallest (structure) in Japan, but we will continue our construction work . . . to make it the world's tallest self-standing radio tower," said Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., operator of Tokyo Sky Tree.

Saying more than 160 million people have visited Tokyo Tower, operator Nippon Television City Corp. pledged to continue its "service as a landmark in Tokyo" and celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2058. Japantimes

The Tokyo Sky Tree, a broadcasting tower currently under construction in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, is pictured on Monday, March 29, 2010, as it reaches 338 meters high to become the nation's tallest structure. Once completed in December 2011, Tokyo's new landmark will become the world's tallest self-standing broadcasting tower at 634 meters. mainichi

Couple of small articles here. Congrats Tokyo/Japan on such a wonderful achievement!

'Tree' towers above Tokyo

Already posted, but it never hurts posting it again.

Tokyo Sky Tree becomes tallest structure in Japan

Just over halfway to its planned height, the Tokyo Sky Tree became the tallest structure in Japan on Monday when construction reached 338 meters (1,108 feet). When completed, it will stand 634 meters (2,080 feet).

The Sky Tree on Monday surpassed the city’s 333-meter (1,092-foot) Tokyo Tower, a landmark and top tourist attraction since it opened in 1958.

Both the Sky Tree and Tokyo tower are designed for television and radio transmission. The Sky Tree’s towering reach will enable transmission of digital signals well above skyscrapers that rise above 200 meters (600 feet) in Tokyo, according to the Sky Tree’s Web site.

When complete, the Sky Tree will have observation towers at both the 350-meter (1,148-foot) and 450-meter (1,476-foot) levels.

While the Sky Tree will be the tallest structure in Japan, it won’t be the biggest in the world. That honor falls to the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, which rises more than 800 meters (2,625 feet) above the Persian Gulf.

Construction is expected to be completed in December 2011 with a grand opening in spring 2012.

The structure already looks crazy compared to the surrounding buildings. I can't want to see T/O photos.
