yes the Guangzhou tower has just gone from 610m to 618m. i wonder if they knew about this one being 611m? no one wants to bild the worlds 2nd tallest tower. should be fun and games over next couple of years.

Quite unlikely. Japanese don't tend to get into teenager-ish "who builds the tallest/biggest" race.

As the Guangzhou tower is nearly complete maybe they will wait until it is topped out before announcing a change to prevent an ongoing battle.

How hard would it be to add to a completed tower? (if anyone can answer without knowing details). Also if a finished structure is added to is the new height offical?

The Guangzhou tower highest point is the top of the spire, they just add a few meters to the spire to make it a bit taller. So there's no need for big structural changes in the design and it can be done even after it's completed. And for the official height it doesn't matter when a few meter is added later on, they'll just change it.

And if Tokyo really wanted to build the highest tower they would've gone beyond the Guangzhou tower with much larger margin then just the few centimeters then originally planned. Now it just depends on the developer if they want to add some meters to become the tallest again.

The design is not that impressive, but I'm glad to see things are moving in my favorite city!

Does this look like the Eiffel tower?

I don't think so...

The original Tokyo Tower looks like the Eiffeltower, this one absolutely does not. This one is round, the Eiffeltower is square. The Eiffeltower stand stands on 4 legs, this one on just on 1 with a steel framework around it.

It just looks very Japanese and with that I mean very functional with a high class finish.

At that height you,ll get a great view of Tokyo The only similarity between the Sky Tree and Eiffel Tower is they are both towers otherwise they are about as different as possable.

the title says PREP but do we have any construction site photos? no? would be great... (:

though i am not exactly a fan of this design, it is quite a spectacular structure - it's very rare for a world-renowned architect to design a tv-tower...

i wonder how much of this design was done by tadao ando and how much by that sculptor...
