From an urban planning perspective, I think that Tokyo is the most brilliant city on Earth. Being very dense and generally decentralized puts it in a much more advantageous position for sustainabilty, since things can be more local. If you need to build a skyscraper, you can build it pretty much anywhere in one of the four or five central wards, rather than confining it to a single dedicated downtown. I think that this also allows for the high-rises to be more likely to be part of a more vibrant neighborhood.
So in Tokyo, it really doesn't matter where the Sky Tree is. It's going to be a big-time landmark, no matter what.

One thing I don't like is that in the future, when you stand at the base of Tokyo Sky Tree and then look up you can't see the top because the first pod is so fat.

It's the same with pretty much any supertall tower. The Ostankino in Russia, The CN tower in Canada. Most of them are like that.

I like this picture from the 19th, it really shows how much of an impact both skytree and the office tower will have on the area

Because yes, Tokyo's skyscrappers are not the most astonishing ones, not really new, not really tall. China is for sure much more impressive if comparing statistics. But from a close look, if you are yourself walking in Tokyo you would immediately understand that the urban development of Tokyo is just the most advanced in this world and that China's cities can't compete with it. It is just blowing you away. The reason is the density. A walk in Shinjuku is much more impressive than a walk in Juijiazui even if the buildings there are about twice as tall as in the first one.
Ok, I have to admit I've never been there. I've never been out of Europe haha But, well is my impression of what I see. And it's a global opinion, you know.

I really love what I've seen of Tokyo because it gives that sensation you're talking about...a continuous city with a huge density of buildings everywhere. But I think it is a bit chaotic.

I'm not saying that it's not organised, because it may have one of the best infrastructures on metro, stations, and so... But it is only the general 'view' or 'sight' of the city. It is difficult to Tokyo to grow more, the main way is by gaining lands to the sea (sorry for the expression if it's wrong, my English is not the best), and cities with a better location, soon or later, will have better development, because they can have everything better situated.

And you take for the example, Shanghai which can be the most chaotic Chinese city. Think about Shenzhen...it is much more clean than Tokyo, and that will turn into a more practical city in the future, and easier to develop.

Other thing is the famous japanese efficience, japanese people do the best with what they have.

Tokyo looks confusing if you look at it from the outside, but if you start to know the city a bit you start to see it's structure, how it's organized. And then it somehow all falls into place in a logical way even though the city is not the result of logical planning. And that's the beauty of Tokyo, it shouldn't work but it does.

09/22 early morning.

And while nothing is to be seen on top, let's just watch the pieces that are being delivered to the site.

Or watch another kind of tower.

Sorry if I used the wrong word, in the context, I use 'clean' for saying that Shenzhen has a lower density of buildings. Do you understand?

I wouldn't talk about if the city is clean or dirty in fact, that would be crazy because I've never been there, furthermore Japan is one of the cleanest places on Earth.

Do you know where this photo was taken? Is it a particular landmark or just from an office building?

If that center area was filled with skyscrapers, Tokyo would be #1 with density. The upper right looks like lower Manhattan in a way, while the upper left looks like uptown NYC minus an ESB, and the lower left looks like Jersey. These are just my opinions, please no flames!

Anyway the TST looks a LONG way from this area in that photo!

It's from that other landmark, the Tokyo tower.

The Sky Tree is about 8 km / 5 miles from the Tokyo Tower, about the distance from the southern tip of Manhattan to Central Park.

The area is filling up slowly, you can already see the construction going ahead on the right side of the picture although it's just a 99.9m high tower. There will also be a 255m high directly behind the tall tower in the front of the picture.

And this is the view to the left, you already see much more skyscrapers.

bluestyle.livedoor.biz/

You can see a construction site for a 207m high tower. Before the white building on the left there will also be a new project that could potentially be a pretty high tower.

It's not and won't be like Manhattan, but if every city would be the same the world would become pretty boring.

Info on all the skyscraper projects in Tokyo can be found here:

I can't see if the bit on top is growth or just things they put up there temporarily.

Which downtown?

BTW is it weird for me to be ...perhaps more excited about that 160 M office tower? The cladding is nice and it looks small and cute
