You know, I just cant get over the fact that I think this is a pretty ugly building. Way too monolithic and looks unfinished, even though it is almost finished.

Couldn't agree with you more. This tower has all the design aesthetic and appeal of an old-fashioned water tower...

I realize that there are many opinions about this tower but we should also recognize the fact that the very top of the spire serves a very practical purpose with the two mass dampers that will stabilize the spire during severe weather or even earthquake conditions and as it continues to rise it will become less noticeable due to the large size of the spire itself. I personally consider it to be an engineering masterpiece with it's intricate design that begins at the bottom with a triangular shape and gradually forms a circular shape as it rises. Thanks to the contributions by Momo and others who have documented every aspect of it's construction by photos and explanations this thread has become the first one I look for when I visit the Supertalls Forum. I also believe it will become a symbol for Tokyo as well as Japanese engineering knowhow.

Like most Japanese designs it's simple, elegant, functional & probably strong as hell. I really don't think they set out to design something to capture the world's attention here; just to stand out somewhat and do its job.

I don't mind the design. Personally I think Canton tower did a better job aesthetically, but this fulfills the purpose and is taller in the end.
