The Sky Tree is undamaged but the top of the Tokyo Tower is bent because of the quake.

How is the structure going in the aftershocks?

This would be a more powerful test in the structures design than what Taipei 101 had to tolerate during its construction.

Tokyo is fine, a strong quake but no severe damage. I walked 9 miles through central Tokyo to get home, many people are stranded - thousands are walking in the streets as no trains are running. Cars jamming the roads. It is calm at the same time. Nobody panicking, except me perhaps. It is ironic though, the oldest line - Arakawa Toden is running!

I walked past Tokyo tower and noticed the top looking odd. The imperial palace walls have some damage but not too severe. Many many aftershocks - a massive magnitude like that ,, unbelievable. We got out of our building and saw cranes being thrown around like a branch in the wind - it must have been terrifying up there - quite an ordeal to live through. Could not place voice calls with Softbank but got through to family & girlfriend via facebook & skype.

Praying for people in Sendai, Iwate & Hokkaido.

There is some terrifying tsunami video on the news now. Best wishes to everyone who is affected.

It really is a testament to Japanese building codes and engineering prowess that more buildings didn't collapse. This was a massive quake. Now if only it were possible to out engineer a tsunami.

Since the tower was unaffected I don't see how any of this earthquake business has any place in this thread.

Here's the Sky Tree during one of the aftershocks in the afternoon. You can see the top of the spire swaying, thanks the gods for the counterweights.

The construction was obviously suspended today after the 1st shocks. The builders have been evacuated the tower pretty quick, they even left the cranes without pulling in the hook. This is why you see it swinging, luckily they didn't have any heavy loads still hanging halfway.
