Both Tour Montparnasse and Ostankino TV & BC tower are just stunning and are iconic sights indeed.

Damn Tokyo is ugly from afar. Sparse greenery and dominated by monotone buildings. It's landmarks are nasty looking radio broadcast towers, like this abomination.

Reminds me of Sao Paulo.

No wonder godzilla is always destroying everything in popular culture, even the Japanese want their city demolished.

its a city based on demand and that means they need lots of residentials. with their earthquake zone limiting size of buildings theyre forced to make them about as tall as they are. personaly i love their landmarks. tokyo tower and the sky tree are some amazing towers. especially if you compare them to towers like KLTV tower.

from a street perspective the density and individual stores look extremely modern and cool. with new york it is the best example of a true city in my opinion. a real concrete jungle. this is based on opinion of course ....

Keep in mind that all of the pictures in this thread of Sky Tree is only one side of Tokyo. Sky Tree is located on the east side of Tokyo called Shitamachi. This is the working class area (dare I say "poor")...far away from the skyscrapers and parks of Shinjuku, Shibuya, Marunouchi etc...unfortunately those areas have height limits in place..but at the same time I think Sky Tree will bring much need attention and re-development projects in the coming years to the neglected "Shitamachi". Actually if you read the Sky Tree website they make a big deal about the rebirth of "Shitamachi".

You can read more about Shitamachi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitamachi

Hahaha, thatīs so ridiculous. Posting such a bold opinion based on a pic of a partial area of a giant city.
Check all this HD video of the different areas of Tokyo from an helicopter and tell me if it changes your opinion:

By the way, Tokyo doesnīt have slums like Sao Paulo and many other cities. Just with that, your post seems like a joke.

As mentioned, Tokyo is best appreciated mainly at street level. Also, at night it literally transforms to a thing of incredible beauty.
I love Tokyo's mid level density, if it weren't for this it would be an entirely different experience. It's like no other city on the planet.
As for greenery, there are many parks throughout the city, some really massive areas you can get lost in while urban designers are now incorporating significant garden areas in new buildings.

Tokyo Sky Tree to have Japanese surroundings
Quote:
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A path leading to Tokyo Sky Tree and a commercial complex beneath the 634-meter telecommunications tower will welcome visitors with true Japanese style when they open next May, the operator said as part of the facilities were shown to reporters Sunday.

Stairs along the pavement connecting nearby Oshiage Station and Tokyo Sky Tree will be paved with stones like those seen at Japanese Shinto shrines, while the plaza before the tower entrance will be planted with pines and cherry trees.

The Tokyo Solamachi commercial complex will have about 300 shops, restaurants and other tenants, with each floor of the buildings having different designs.

^ Not only that it seems like the canal will be lighted with LED lights too.

National Geographic also just released an article on it with a nice picture (click the link to see it):

What was the documentary you've seen on Discovery Channel about? Now I can only guess that it was an old design of the tower that was shown. But maybe you've seen something completely different like those mega structures like Sky City 1000 or Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid that were only conceptual projects to showcase new building technologies. Those have nothing to do with this tower.

Some pictures.
